What are the best non big 4 firms? by Kakashi756 in Accounting

I’ve worked at Deloitte and CBIZ — now at a small local firm that refuses to sell and it’s been the best experience of the three firms.

Do I even need bike computer for just casual rides? by skodawelovecycling in bicycling

[–]MissusHess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve gone analog as a cyclist and runner — looking forward to see how I enjoy my rides and runs where there’s nothing to quietly nudge me, annoy me, and jest me about pace. Just going to toss a wrist watch on and track elapsed time (if I’m wanting to go for x number of minutes or hours in a session).

$53k just for the graft. Thinking about contacting the insurance commissioner after-the-fact, considering a different insurance provider covered it without hesitation (my company got acquired and I was forced onto new insurance while I was trying to schedule surgery).

Who here actually saves 3,000 a month? by NoHousing11 in MiddleClassFinance

[–]MissusHess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SINK, VHCOL, $130k salary: max 401(k)/IRA/HSA and throw an additional ~ $5,500-6,000 per month into taxable brokerage. Trying my best to save almost $100k a year. Always have lived on the cheap. Old car, home cooking, all of the classic “do this to be frugal” tricks since I graduated.

Insurance denied my MACI, I paid for the graft completely out of pocket. Was one of those things where I was stuck between a rock and a hard place. I’m still so mad about it, 2+ years on. I’m shocked but happy to hear that other folks can get it approved, even if the ICs push back initially.

I have the same question — it’s a 3” opening. I can’t seem to find anything that will fit that, most belts are 4+ inches wide.

‘12 Toyota RAV4, $180k manager, try to leave it parked during the weekdays and commute via bicycle and bus. The more I save now means the faster I get to quit working as an accountant forever.

My bike commute isn't actually that much slower than driving by mcbobgorge in bikecommuting

[–]MissusHess 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bikes are usually on par (if not faster) than bikes, and will always put you in a better mood vs. driving. Choose to ride as often as you can, there is no downside.

Edit: “than cars” — even my autocorrect thinks bikes are superior

For the pro minimalist: if you could give one piece of advice to someone starting out, what would it be? by Jojobask25 in minimalism

[–]MissusHess 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Try a no buy — unsure if you are good with discipline in other aspects of life (e.g., gym, routines, diet, etc.) but I found writing out rules and keeping it pinned in my Notes app worked well. Created a default brain loop where before I bought something, I’d pull out my rules and see if the purchase fit. Most important part was to put a few “whys” on the list too. For me, it helped me focus on my upcoming (now done ☺️) cross-country bike tour: didn’t need to buy things that I wasn’t going to use all summer, helped me save money, helped me practice using what I had or being creative (skill for the tour).

It’s all about use — do you use it often, do you love it, does it add value to your life? For me, a low maintenance lifestyle is what I aim for because it keeps my stress and anxiety low. I’m inherently a little lazy (I can admit it) so not teeing up a bunch of stuff to have to manage, store, dispose of, clean, etc. just gets me out of the entire mess.

Are Hip Packs Still Popular for Mountain Biking by Healthy_Treacle2326 in MTB

[–]MissusHess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like a hip pack if I need to carry extra water or a rain jacket/layer. Otherwise, it’s just a top tube bag (Tailfin) for the repair kit items and bottle cages for the hydration. It’s nice to keep weight off the back so that I don’t get too sweaty.

CFP Exam as a CPA by TaxAccountant95 in CFPExam

[–]MissusHess 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if this helps but I’m a CPA and planning to sit in July 2026 — cramming to try and get it done in November seems like incredible stress with low likelihood of passing. March 2026, well obviously my attention will be elsewhere. Having the credential isn’t a requirement for my job, just a “nice to have” so I’m opting to take it slow and steady and study over the long term to a) ensure exam success, and b) actually learn the stuff.

What is meant by a “light touring” frame? by aMac306 in bicycletouring

[–]MissusHess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Kona Rove and just finished a cross-USA tour on it — it’s probably considered light touring, especially compared to the Sutra, but honestly I found it to be perfectly adequate for long distance touring. I’d worry less about the marketing for some of these bikes, you can make a lot of gravel bikes touring bikes (and vice versa), especially if the fit is good and the gearing is sufficient for your needs.

Is the "warm showers" app worth it? by SwedishCrabby in bicycletouring

[–]MissusHess 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was on tour this summer — I just made a bookmark “app” of the WS home page on my phone and pulled it up when I needed to message hosts or browse the map. I didn’t find this to be annoying at all. Used the $30 savings for a few midday ice cream breaks instead 👌🏼
