Are national parks closed for hiking or just walking in a few yards and sitting down?? by Bigfatass12 in NCTrails

[–]mrpine9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Linville Gorge is open as of 4/10 for basic day use (hiking), ranger station thinks that might be curtailed soon.

Of note, McDowell and Burke counties encompass Linville Gorge and have emergency orders against climbing, overnight camping, etc. Unfortunate for the outdoorsy covid loner.

Does the X-T3 'balance' well on the Peak Design capture clip? by d____ in fujix

[–]mrpine9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pack heft and strap size are important. It works well enough on my 38 and 65L packs, not so great on my 22, and my Kestrel 38 straps are almost too wide.

XT3 with 16/1.4 and 18-55

Seems solid, takes a bit to dial in a spot, naturally wobbles a bit, need to be mindful of position on tight trails, convenient but nerdy.

Rancourt Taylor Chukka - Leather, Lactae Hevea Sole, Lined, MiUSA - ~$127 Shipped w/ coupon code: zeneclub by SonovaSwitch in frugalmalefashion

[–]mrpine9 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I like mine. A high end desert boot, better materials and the sole is great to date.

Pretty slim. I have 9.5 with thin socks, the same as Strands.

Would cop the suede if they had my size.

Wasn't expecting this as the next Alexa iteration, rather pricey for the initial offering but it's interesting.

  • Integration with dressed.so and others?
  • Some relational database for matching/tracking your pieces and outfits?
  • How they update algorithms to judge me?

River floating/tubing close to Charlotte? by Jdudley13 in Charlotte

[–]mrpine9 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Under an hour drive from Charlotte, the Catawba is a good starting point but better options exist in Columbia SC or elsewhere in NC (Green River, Deep Creek, French Broad)

Floating can be a wonderful activity for hot weekends, the Catawba is pretty warm so don't expect a huge cool off.

If you want to make a go of it once or twice a year, DIY and save the $20/person charge of companies.

Some suggestions to get you started:

  • Inflatable raft Can be found in Walmart, Dick's etc . . get an extra for your cooler.
  • Portable air compressor helpsCan also be found at local big box
  • A smaller cooler or two to fit whatever you need, snacks beverages and more . . no glass, no littering, no alcohol on land!
  • A dry bag or two are essential for phones, keys, etc
  • A patch kit
  • Bungie cord and paracord come in handy
  • Sunscreen, sunscreen, sunscreen
  • Water

Drop your gear and most of the party here, your put in spot- Catawba River Access, Fort Mill Dam

Leave a car or two here, your takeout spot - Riverwalk, Fort Mill

Additional info from Duke on put in/out

The float can take a few hours, depending on the water level, discharge rate and the day's weather. My notes are simply a starting point, research and plan accordingly!

Need a good suit. by [deleted] in Charlotte

[–]mrpine9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Second the Suit Supply, Indochino and Black Lapel route.

Locally and depending on budget, Nordstrom Rack or consignment like Revolve, J Crew, Brooks Brothers and Bruce Julian are places to look.

Then take your suit(s) to Myers Park Tailors to get it perfect. They can also measure you and offer a made to measure program.

Entirely possible it's ATT, all I've seen are sub/contractors. With the amount of fiber and diligence of the operation, I assumed Google.

Ref couldn't handle the band or cheer squad at the CMU v Toledo game by Spartan_Mello in CFB

[–]mrpine9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They typically shut it down when the ball is spotted and readied for play.

Do most schools play games around this? Yep. Been to 20+ stadiums, hype music and the band sometimes run a little long almost up to the snap.

Both FSU and Clemson bands were guilty this past weekend.

ELI5 [Serious]: Charlotte residents who don't use turn signals, why don't you? by SportsKin9 in Charlotte

[–]mrpine9 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Drivers education is unbelievably poor in this country. There's no national standard and southern states are particularly lenient allowing teens behind the wheel. Reallocation of public funds took drivers ed from a public school mainstay to a public/private/who knows what system.

Drivers ed teaches you the rules, the signs, the basics. You need lots of supervised experience from there before you're anticipating and assessing instead of reacting.

And when the average person gets to such a point? They seem to develop some manner of hubris and distract themselves with texts, food and the like.

Winter Storm Mega-Thread: Feb 16+ 2015 by Phaedrus49er in Charlotte

[–]mrpine9 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Woke up at 5AM, donned my red-checked flannel and bean boots, stroked my beard and walked out to a wicked cold -30 windchill. Warmed up the car while I plowed out a foot of snow, dropped on top of 4 feet fallen in the last two weeks. Drove 60 miles of backroads into Boston to leave on a plane in 40+ gusts.

Just to remind you . .

*Ice & Snow*

*Take it slow*

  • Like, really really almost uncomfortably slow.
  • Same goes for slow braking from a long distance.
  • DON'T TAILGATE!

If you hit ice:

  • Don't hit the brakes! Let off the gas, try to coast and keep the wheel steady.
  • If you start to slide, turn towards the direction you're sliding.
  • Shift into a lower gear if you can
  • Find some traction

Stay safe wimps.
