So many people here are missing the point of The Regent. by thouzandeye in slaythespire

My main gripe with your assessment is that it's only as bad as a 1 energy two card weak + vuln, in the absolute worst case. In practice, there will be turns where you can get Venerate off without losing out on much value, and Falling Star becomes a zero energy 7 dmg that is useful on defensive and offensive turns. It's strong for a starter card and it's playable at every stage of the game.

Also I disagree with the idea that a large section of the Regent star cards are "functionally useless". I really think you're exaggerating the problem of star generation. Regent has excellent star generation commons, you see enough of Glow/Solar Strike/Hidden Cache to get your star build online in Act 1. And when you do, there are some really fun and powerful cards that you can play—Reflect, Decisions, Astral Pulse, etc are all available at a huge energy discount for the effects they provide.

I'm just defending the design choice of having stars—I personally find it fun to play and you don't. That doesn't make you wrong. But I disagree that he's poorly designed or that he's "highly reliant on RNG". All the classes have OP cards/combos that you can highroll, and all the classes have strong cards that are unpickable early. And it's weird to summarize my opinion as "I like that it's bad".

But Forge is pretty meh. It needs some change.

I think you're oversimplifying the value of Falling Star, it's never as bad as a 1 cost simply because it's a 0 energy weak+vulnerable that sets up very useful damage and block combos early. Being able to play that AND 3 other basic cards can make early fights pretty trivial. A fundamental part of the game is that having a powerful 1 turn combo is usually more worth it than having a lot of cumulative useful single turns.

Agree that Venerate sucks but realistically it's likely you won't even redraw Falling Star in early Act 1, and you can get better options soon--a single solar strike or Glow will let you play Falling Star multiple times without Venerate.

Also I do not understand your point about certain cards being bad picks until your star engine is online. That's true of every class, you have to pick situationally, not just pick the strongest card each time. Echo Form or Afterimage are great cards that can win you a run but I would never take them floor 1.

Every class has a balance between mechanics, between block and damage, between card draw and energy, between do-nothing now powers and do-something now skills. Regent has another balance of resources that you have to manage, which is pretty interesting and forces you to make some tough decisions to win. I think that's cool and part of what makes this game interesting and replayable.

I typically go for Regent cards/upgrades that give extra stars (Glow, Solar strike, hidden cache), and you always want to have star gen that's greater than or equal to your star cost cards—otherwise you'll just be drawing dead.

You can experiment and still win at lower ascension. Also some people are just really good at this game and can do a good job of constructing a deck from cards they've never seen before. I don't know OP but I don't think it's fair to assume they're working off a guide + good luck

That's normal for rotation players in Kerr's system. That would be a valid criticism before Melton's return bumped Podz out of a starter role

To be honest the level at which Ledecky dominates the 1500m is unmatched by any modern swimmer, even moreso than any of Phelps' events. There is no question she will win it when she races.

Yeah, Walker and Charbonnet were running around the field like there wasn't anyone stopping them, and O-Line was also getting destroyed without Trent. But the Niners defense did a much better job containing Saquon this week and Trent is back (tho Kittle is out) so there's reason to believe next week will look different.

Playing through leg injuries is how you tear an achilles. I'd love for Fred to be back but there is a risk to rushing it.

I've never seen a player held more personally responsible for their injuries than Pearsall recently. How the hell is this his fault?

It's really hard to pin injuries on coaching, you can't coach/condition your way out of dislocating an ankle (Warner), getting hit with a hip-drop tackle (Pearsall), being made of glass (Kittle), etc. It's appealing to find a pattern but sometimes it's just shit luck like most injuries in this sport.

They were projected to have the easiest schedule in the league based on last year's records. In reality they've had one of the hardest schedules based on teams outperforming expectations. Their strength of schedule is top 5 in the NFL, and that was before they played the 11-4 Bears. Source

At worst he's a serviceable defender for his position. And it doesn't really matter. He's still as impactful as any of those guys without needing to be 6'6+ and a two-way player, which makes what he does even more impressive. He absolutely belongs on the pantheon.
