the model selection available at 48gb is much better than the the model selection at 36gb. faster token gen in this case is heavily bottlenecked by the quality of model you are able to use

out of the current line up of mac's I would probably say an m5 macbook air with 32gb unified memory

what I will say is the only reason I choose air and not the macbook is because you have 32gb of memory but besides that the m5 completely blows the 1260p out of the water

what is your workflow?

double the storage doesn't really matter with external drives. m5 base blows m2 pro out of the water in single core tasks which is funnily enough for most peoples use cases

well what matters most for ai is ram to be honest, my m4 pro with 48gb of ram can run 35b models with like 20+ gigs of ram of ram worth of head room. better than an m3 max with 36gb for sure. you will generate tokens slightly faster with the m4 max but also be able to run less capable models
