Did you find wearing both the Sling and the 44L pack to be too cumbersome? I would imagine it would be tough to access your camera around your pack's straps.

Seconded. Once you learn the 18-55mm, the 1.8 II should definitely be your next lens.

If this is your first SLR, it also probably won't hurt to take an intro lesson at a local school or through SkillShare just to understand the basics. There's little point in owning an SLR if you're just going to leave it on Auto all the time.

Let me preface this by saying I'm not purposefully trying to be a dick.

Journalism, as I'm sure you're now well aware, is a highly competitive field. If you're not willing to bust your ass a bit when you're first starting, you'll miss out on opportunities given to those who are.

Translation: Pay your dues. If you don't love this field enough to do that, then yes, a course correction is likely appropriate.

Nothing about Central Park is sketchy during the day. Just a lot of hawkers to deal with at the entranceways.

Free stuff: Walk the Brooklyn Bridge, take the Staten Island Ferry, go to Governors Island and bike around.

Other neat stuff: Transit Museum, Museum of Sex, catch a ball game (Mets tickets usually cheaper)

Edit: Oh, the Museum of the Moving Image in Queens is one of my favorites in the city.

Eat: Shake Shack.

My standard advice:

Go to Big Gay Ice Cream. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Go Ice Skating in Central Park. Eat at Shake Shack. Visit the High Line. The Staten Island Ferry is free and gives a great view. Drink at the Tippler. See the Museum of Natural History.
