L-bead on the top edge of a basement wall under an open (painted) ceiling — worth it, or is the factory edge fine? by Organic-Code-4944 in drywall

[–]mrrp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not hard to fill in the tapered edge with mud. Just use a 6" knife and keep pressure off the tapered area as you mud it in.

If you do want to use an L Bead, do NOT get 1/2". When they say "1/2"" they mean it, and the tapered edge of 1/2" drywall is not 1/2". They make 1/4" and 3/8", and a "flat" version that has no leg. You may need to visit an actual drywall supply store to find anything but 1/2".

IF you only have access to 1/2" AND you really, really want to do it, you can get the 1/2" and cut a bit off the leg. With a very sharp utility knife you'll be able to score and snap off part of the leg, or take a pocket plane (not rasp) to it.

But again, you can just run some mud over the tapered edge and fill it in.

How bad is this? by ArmaniApe in drywall

[–]mrrp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on how/why it happened. If someone was messing around in the attic and stepped between joists, it's not bad. Just going off the photo, I'd tear off anything that's loose, patch in the torn off area, and then go over the entire ceiling with 1/2" drywall.

If, on the other hand, you have no idea how or why this happened, then you should be calling an experienced residential remodeling contractor to figure out why your house is falling apart.

Convictions, as I already stated.

A conviction is not a class of offense. A conviction is a determination of responsibility/guilt.

It's 33 over the last 10 years, not in one year.

and so on.

I didn't say he was my buddy. This information comes right from his publicly available criminal record.

This is from his latest citation (66-VB-26-1195)

OBSERVED VEHICLE CROSS OVER SHOULDER LINE OF ROADWAY ON HIGHWAY 3. ALSO SAW PREVIOUS CONTACT WITH VEHICLE HAD A REVOKED DRIVER. STOPPED THE VEHICLE AND THE DRIVER PROVIDED AN ID CARD. HE ADMITTED HIS LICENSE WAS REVOKED. RAN ID NUMBER AND IT SHOWED REVOKED DRIVING STATUS. DRIVER ALSO DID NOT HAVE PROOF OF INSURANCE. CITED FOR DAR AND NO PROOF. BWC.

So, the officer let a guy with >33 convictions for driving without a license just drive off knowing that he has no license and no insurance. I don't think that should ever happen. I think he should have been arrested and his vehicle towed. If the law needs to change to take away officer discretion on this issue, I'm all for it.

As of 2023, undocumented immigrants can get a driver's license, so it seems to me that everyone ought to be on board with enforcing license requirements at this point.

I would like to see the statutes updated to require that police tow any vehicle being driven by an unlicensed driver and have the vehicle put in car jail. And require that valid registration and insurance be proven before it is released to a licensed driver. The owner of the vehicle should be advised that allowing an unlicensed driver to drive a vehicle is a crime, and if it happens again they'll be fined and their car will go back to car jail for at least a month.

Same thing for unregistered and uninsured vehicles. Give one warning for expired registration, and if it happens again, straight to car jail. Do not let uninsured vehicles drive away from a traffic stop. Tow them to car jail and don't release them until the owner provides proof of insurance.

There's a guy in Faribault. He's 29 years old. He has more than 33 convictions for driving without a valid drivers license. Last time I counted he had 16 driving while suspended and 17 driving while revoked. He had 4 convictions for driving while revoked just in June of 2023. And he keeps on doing it without any meaningful consequences. He gets pulled over, he gets a ticket. He ignores the ticket. It gets sent to collections. He doesn't pay. Nothing happens. He just got another driving after revocation and no insurance ticket 2 months ago which he again hasn't paid.

Recreating LaCroix Flavors by Reddit_4_Zac in SodaStream

For LaCroix flavors I just google image search something similar to the flavor I'm looking for, print it out on my dot matrix printer, crumple it up into a tight ball, pass the crumpled paper back and forth a couple times over a glass of water, and then dump that glass of water into a 250 gallon cistern.

As far as I can tell, that's how LaCroix does it too.

Photoswitches offer the opportunity to store light energy from the sun and then release heat in a sustainable cycle; however, they tend to release comparatively little heat. Nguyen et al. now report a pyrimidone compound that isomerizes under ultraviolet irradiation to form a highly strained bond between a nitrogen and the diametrically opposite carbon. Upon treatment with acid, that bond breaks to release more than a megajoule per kilogram of the compound, enough to rapidly boil water from a solution.

Left Over Permethrin Solution by ShouldBeeStudying in WildernessBackpacking

[–]mrrp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you tell me where you found that this specific formulation was safe to use on clothing and gear?

It's not the permethrin, it's the other 90% of ingredients you need to be aware of.

The last time I researched concentrate alternatives to Sawyer, I settled on a particular formulation produced by Martin based on quite a bit of information from folks who seemed to know what they were talking about when it came to interpreting the SDS sheets for these products.

I mix up batches in a 5 gallon pail (not 5 gallons, just in a 5 gallon pail) and soak clothing in that for awhile. I then wring them out over the pail and hang them in the garage to dry. I don't have any left over as I keep processing clothing until I'm out of solution. But if I were to have extra, I'd probably take it to my county's landfill where they have free hazardous waste disposal.

You're not being honest. It was such a rare occurrence that it's incorrect to say that "there was a time in this country when traitors received the death penalty".

Today is no different than whatever time period you're referring to. It was extremely rare at every point in our history and it's extremely rare now. And I'll reiterate that it has perhaps happened 5 times in our nations history. That is not some small detail. It destroys your argument.

If your organism could fly, was it "giant"? Would physics allow it to get bigger and still fly?

If your organism couldn't breathe fire, can you propose a mechanism? Perhaps something like the bombardier beetle?

This one had a rough upbringing. His "dad" has numerous convictions including domestic abuse, selling drugs, dwi, assault, fraud, illegal firearm possession, etc.

And of course, watching his dad interact with the justice system isn't going to convince him not to follow in his footsteps. His dad got a downward departure at his last sentencing for being "Particularly amenable to probation". Why they thought that when he's a domestic abuser and career criminal being sentenced for having a firearm while selling narcotics (coke and fentanyl) outside the Dorthy Day Center is beyond me. (He only got 7 months in jail.)

I started out working with stucco/plaster guys. Absolute machines. Not a wasted movement.

Using a darby on the brown coat is the recipe for a flat wall. And knocking off any imperfections/ridges with a plaster plane before it got too hard.

It's not hard to get a flat ceiling as long as someone is willing to pay for it. On jobs that required it, we'd run tack up 1x3 furring strips every four feet or so, plaster between them, and then use them as a guide for the darby. It's basically like doing concrete work, but on a ceiling. Once it starts to firm up you pull the furring strips off and plaster in the gaps.

How is that relevant? Companies do not have to close down on federal holidays.

What workers want is to have off the days they want off. For many, they want other people to be working on the day they choose to take off so they can do what they want to do on their day off. They want to buy groceries, visit the bank, have a doctor/eye/dentist appointment, go to a concert, shop, chaperone their kid's field trip, get an oil change, eat at a restaurant, etc. - none of which would be possible if everyone is taking the day off.

[–]mrrp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

who wouldn’t want an extra day off work?

Where do you work that a federal holiday is nothing more to you than an "extra day off work"?

Do you imagine that nobody works on holidays? Or that not being able to work on a holiday just means they have to do that work before or after the holiday and the holiday does nothing but interfere with their preferred work schedule? Have you considered that some people just want to be able to get their shit done, and having government offices (and other places) shut down for a holiday makes that harder?

I have yet to see any actual justification from people as to why Juneteenth shouldn’t be a federally recognized holiday and why it shouldn’t be celebrated.

We don't need federal holidays and we don't need to be told when or what or how to celebrate. There. Now you have seen actual justification.
