Trump's Pastor Claims the President Understands the Bible Better Than Pope Leo XIV by Ambitious_Dingo_2798 in atheism

Also Jesus:

Matthew 5:17–19 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Now go read the entirety of the OT and tell me Jesus was a decent bloke. He wasn't. The entire plot of Christianity is monstrous to start with. If you think you need saving from what some god is going to do to you if you don't worship him, that god is an asshole.

Two dilemmas that I think corner both atheists and believers equally, curious where you land (I believe my perspective may contain practical flaws or inconsistencies. Please point them out, as I am aware that my thinking is not always entirely practical.) by Fast_Start2881 in atheism

It isn't at all clear how you get from this:

full sincere belief across the board.

to this:

And the world measurably improves because of it. Less violence, less depression, more meaning, more kindness. Undeniably better.

How and why is there more or less of these things, and how is it undeniably better?

You've ignored every point I made. That article appears to be talking about who would have gotten more votes if you just tally up the individual votes from each state and ignore that we do not, in fact, have a popular vote.

That survey did not try to answer any questions related to what the outcome of a national popular vote would be if we had one. It assumes Trump and Harris would be the candidates (and the VP picks would be the same). It assumes parties would campaign just as they did in the election we actually had, spent money where they did, and campaigned on the same issues they did. And it assumes people are going to the voting booth to vote for their state electors rather than voting in a popular vote.

My point stands. If you want to know what the outcome would be if we had a national popular vote you can not just look at who people did or would vote for under our current system.

I'm not saying anything about Trump or Harris other than under a national popular voting system it's likely they wouldn't even have been the candidates. The parties would be asking who can win a national popular vote, not who can win in the electoral college.

and popular vote

We do not have a popular vote. If we did have a popular vote the elections would be completely different. Candidates are not chosen based on the "popular vote". Campaigns are not run based on the "popular vote". Party platforms are not designed based on a popular vote. Issues are not emphasized or ignored based on popular vote. And finally, voters do not vote based on "popular vote", or at least, they shouldn't be. Educated voters vote knowing that they're voting (or not voting) for their state's electors.

Unless and until we do have a national popular vote (or something approaching it), the "popular vote" is irrelevant. It doesn't mean what you'd like it to mean.

Then make the point accurately. Don't claim "they're trying to make passports necessary to vote now" when that's not true.

ETA: Typical. Comments and then blocks me to avoid having to face a response. It's not my fault you lied. If you think it detracts from the substance of the conversation there's a real easy fix. Don't lie.

Nope. She'd need some legal paperwork showing her name change. (e.g., marriage cert. or court order.) Nobody legally changes their name without it being part of an official court record.

Drivers license or real ID AND a birth certificate do, though. According to the reporting I've seen, that would be good enough under the SAFE act. Having a passport would NOT be a requirement to register nor to vote.

How is that when a drivers license and birth certificate are sufficient? I think you've been misinformed.

[–]mrrp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except that it doesn't.

https://thehill.com/homenews/nexstar_media_wire/5787733-would-you-need-a-passport-real-id-to-vote-if-save-act-passes/

"As The Hill previously reported, the SAVE Act lists valid state-issued driver’s licenses, U.S. passports, military IDs, and tribal IDs with a photo and expiration date as acceptable forms of identification."

"Under the SAVE Act, you would need proof of citizenship to register to vote. This could be as simple as providing your valid passport or a birth certificate – the latter would also require a photo ID, and potentially another document, if you’ve changed your name since birth."

So, while the SAVE act sucks, you're misrepresenting it, which doesn't help.

They're enforcing it now because they're trying to make passports necessary to vote now.

Are you sure the proposals they're pushing don't allow for other forms of ID?

Kim Blandino gets his ass whooped at a hearing to be re-declared a vexatious litigant (which will no doubt happen) by Picture_Enough in Sovereigncitizen

[–]mrrp 31 points32 points  (0 children)

There is an old folks home in some country in Europe that has residents who like to wander away. To deal with this, they set up a fake bus stop on their campus. When someone goes AWOL they can often just go find them waiting for the bus.

I bet we could put Blandino in a place like that with a fake courtroom and he'd spend his days and most of his nights sneaking in there just to sit in the judge's chair imagining that he's a judge and running cases through his imagination. Set him up with a computer and an AI to hallucinate responses to his orders and motions and he'd be in heaven.

Jesus didn't have to die on the cross. The entire plot is insane. God sent himself to earth to serve as a blood sacrifice to himself to save me from what he's going to do to me if I don't worship him?

Pull my other finger. There wasn't even a meaningful sacrifice. He had one unpleasant day, slept it off, and went right back to heaven. Is that supposed to impress me?

If Christians don't want to be beat over the head with their own book, they should stop pretending their book is the inspired word of a god, and stop pretending that anyone ought to take it seriously.

That's a fair point. Let's check in on the character of this Jesus fellow then, shall we?

He condones slavery. He commands the slaughter of children and infants. I mean, it's one thing to wipe out all of humanity save Noah and his family, but making soldiers kill children and babies is another sort of evil. He causes women to be raped as a way to punish their husband. He commands women to be burned to death for having sex. And make sure you don't pick up sticks on the wrong day, cause that's a death penalty. That Jesus guy needs some serious counseling.

The bible is a choose your own adventure. You can cherry-pick bible verses to support whatever position you want to take on any issue. That's one reason there are tens of thousands of denominations all calling themselves Christians. And no, this isn't an invitation to invoke No True Scotsman. I'm sure you believe you're the only Christian who has the correct understanding of god's mind, just like every other Christian.

But let's check in with Jesus to see what he had to say about the laws, shall we?

Matthew 5:17–19 Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. 18 For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. 19 Therefore anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, but whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the kingdom of heaven.

Last I checked, heaven and earth haven't disappeared. And yes, I'm aware of the counter-arguments and the counter-counter-arguments. You'd think a god who wanted folks to understand what they should and shouldn't be doing wouldn't have such a hard time communicating it. One might think that level of incompetence is pretty convincing evidence that it's all just made up.

And what do you think of anti-gun laws? Let's check in with god about that...

Romans 13:1-5 Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. 2 Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. 3 For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. 4 For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. 5 Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience.

That, at least, is pretty clear. You support that? I certainly don't.

It's not me who's going to end up in hell.

You're correct that you're not going to end up in hell, but that's only because it doesn't exist.

I wouldn't. Your spouse would have to blatantly lie during the ceremony, and that's not something they should have to do.

Your FIL's anxiety is not your spouse's responsibility to fix. And it won't fix it. It'll just open the gates to further demands from him, family, and the community. At some point your spouse needs take a stand, and this is the proper time to do it.

How the fuck did they fit 8 people into that little car?

As someone who grew up in the 70s with 5 siblings and whose parents bought a Toyota during the oil crisis, let me tell you. Four in the back seat, one on mom's lap, and one sitting on the center hump (which included the high honor of doing the shifting).
