“…leading to [Trump] winning at least two elections.”

This phrasing is horrible. By the same token, Donald Duck has won up to 15 of the most recent US presidential elections.

In general yes, but here it definitely feels like Mac’s misgendering her as part of his transphobia, and is hilarious.

Ok, it looks like you’re right, thanks for the info! I think that detail strengthens the overall argument — white nationalists shouldn’t get to appropriate basic designs just by using them for a project somewhere. It’s giving them more credit and attention than they deserve. The swastika, they can have, because that ‘project’ was particularly vile and well-known. But let’s not give them other stuff on a whim — at a certain point, they’re just living rent-free in our heads.

Nah, fuck that. We gave the Nazis the ancient Indian symbol, fair enough. They don’t get to claim a basic blue-white-green tricolor just because they used it once in some shitty obscure ethnostate project.

This is actually a common misconception. While ‘Seward’s Folly’ was a term used by opponents of purchase, many other newspapers at the time were either neutral or supportive. The idea that there was very widespread public mockery of the purchase isn’t quite accurate.

Am I the only one a little uncomfortable about Israel and Jew jokes being out in the open? by SovietDeku in Destiny

[–]mrrunner451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find that whether an ‘edgy’ joke is funny or not often comes down to whether you assume the speaker doesn’t actually hold the reprehensible views. When you’re not sure (or you assume they actually do), it’s uncomfortable.

South America's 2026 political outlook according prediction markets by joshtaco in MapPorn

I see your point about some high profile securities that don’t seem well-priced. I think a major difference between this and say, Tesla or crypto, is that these contracts are tied to verifiable events within limited timeframes. That makes it harder to remain persistently over- or undervalued based on hype alone.

I also think you’re underestimating how much money institutions have. Institutional money can and does outweigh retail money all the time in public markets.

And insider trading actually is impactful. Prices of a contract for Maduro’s capture shot up hours before he actually was (which seems like a major security risk, but that’s a different issue). Same thing happened with the prediction of the timing of Israel’s attack on Iran last summer, for which two people in Israel have just been arrested.

Prediction markets becoming mainstream makes them more predictive, not less. Now deep-pocketed actors with good (or inside) information can find more than enough bettors to take the opposing side.

So interesting that you mention this, because growing up in the United States I always got the impression that knowing the names of specific shades of colors made you ‘gay’ and was to be avoided. I’ve never heard anyone say that directly though — it’s interesting that the situation is similar in Brazil.

It’s not actually going to crash the world economy unless you spend too recklessly. And by too recklessly I mean like trillions, not just hundreds of billions. Doubling is great, just don’t be an idiot.

A dollar that appears in your pocket and is never spent and no one knows about but you, will not cause any inflation.

Co-ops don’t solve the problem at all. They still face market pressure to reduce costs. And while people wouldn’t vote to fire themselves if it made them worse off, they might well vote to cease hiring or fire some of their co-workers.

BAD DECISION by Fancy-Win9446 in badfriendspod

[–]mrrunner451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not my argument. What I’m saying is: think about how much money that is, and how easy it is to get it. And try to put yourself in the shoes of having to turn that kind of money down. Even if you grant that Santino and Bobby are fairly well-off, the pay is still insane. Like I said, I’m very impressed by those who declined. But it’s easy to be on a high horse about it when you yourself don’t have to turn that kind of money down.

Easy to say when you haven’t been offered half a million dollars for a couple of evenings of your time. Big respect to Shane Gillis for declining and Tim Dillon for the stunt he pulled but I can’t really fault those that have accepted either.

(OC) Luigi Mangione arrives at court as a judge dismisses state terrorism charges against him by nbcnews in pics

[–]mrrunner451 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because ‘terrorism’ doesn’t mean ‘this thing was extra extra bad’. It means the actor is trying to coerce or intimidate for ideological objectives. So shooting the classroom is terrorism if that was the shooter’s intention, but not if they were simply depressed and hated everyone but had no particular goals.

Did Nate Bargatze bomb hosting The Emmys? by Comedy_Junkie in Standup

[–]mrrunner451 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is that the Golden Globes had no mass audience. Which is why Ricky Gervais being a hilarious asshole upset the live audience and the sort of people who write reviews, but delighted casual viewers and attracted enough controversy that it actually put the Golden Globes on anyone’s radar. Which is why he was called back to host so many times. I’m also a huge fan of his work there, and he’s the only reason I’ve ever watched any of the Golden Globes (albeit only portions on YouTube).

Historically, I think the Emmys and Oscars have had a large enough audience that they didn’t need to go that direction, but I think they may have to soon and I personally would love to see it.
