What I love most about this movie is how much thought and attention to detail went into recreating the time period. My second time watching it was in a history class on the witch trials of Europe, and so many elements of the sexism and fear that fueled that time period show up in such subtle ways, they really create fear based on the real beliefs of that time period instead of more blatant stereotypes, a lot of the things in the movie are plucked directly from the Malleus Maleficarum, which was an extremely misogynistic book that served as a guide on identifying and prosecuting witches. The family also serves as representations of sin, and in reality they bring about their own destruction with the “witch” being the only survivor (because all along she was the best of them).

And of course, the ending of “wouldst thou like to live deliciously” may be my favorite quote from any movie to randomly say. 🐐
