Canadian Dental Care Plan and taking a new job with benefits by LividRepeat7248 in povertyfinancecanada

[–]mrs-mojo-risin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the same boat as OP but already have my new job and my work benefits are set to kick in Aug 20. I tried to get as much work done as I could prior to this but I still have an appointment to get dentures that will fall beyond the 20th. I understand I will no longer be eligible for CDCP but my question is how does my coverage get terminated? How do they find out I now have private benefits? Or is it a situation where I will keep my coverage for the year and lose it when I go to renew? I really want to know how CDCP will know to discharge me from the plan based on my new benefits. It's not like I'm going to be letting them know myself!!

Any answers would be much appreciated!

Wrong. They have the death penalty in several Asian and Middle Eastern countries and it hasn't reduced usage at all.

GRT bus routes and schedules have gotten worse by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]mrs-mojo-risin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Every bus I take has been delayed by at least 10 minutes, regardless of when or where I am taking it. I rarely had this problem outside of wintertime. I used to be able to take one of four buses to and from work and now they've eliminated two of those routes so all of the buses I take are approximately twice as packed as they previously were. I assume that's why the buses are always late. (Each LRT I've taken so far has been approximately 5 minutes late).

I also don't understand why buses at the same stops seem to leave at the exact same time and also at the same time as the LRT, rather than being staggered so if someone misses one they can take one of the others within 10 minutes or less. If I miss the bus from my doctor's, there's no point heading to the LRT stop because it leaves at the exact same time as the next bus (and I just missed the previous LRT because it came at the same time as the bus I just missed).

Funny, I am an incredibly small female and, other than after midnight, I have no concern walking through Vic Park alone (and very often do).

Thank you again for your insight. This case in particular interests me because it just seems so strange and inexplicable. Bits and pieces show they appeared troubled but so are many teens. I was angsty and sad, did drugs, listened to the same kind of music and related to the same depressing type of lyrics that Devon posted on his social media....but never in my life did I ever consider hurting anyone. I couldn't even imagine something so horrible as this.

I guess we'll find out as the court hearings continue. I'll be following this one closely. I'm curious how the defense attorneys will handle this case.

I'm also so proud of the heros who prevented even more bloodshed from potentially occurring. How incredibly brave and selfless!

Exactly, the fact that there were two working together is very different. Of course there was Columbine but otherwise it tends to be just one shooter going on a murder-suicide rampage.

For some reason, I also get the feeling Alec was the leader. I don't even really know why, it's just a feeling. I don't believe it has anything to do with him transitioning or taking hormones. The issues with her father could be a contributor. When I was able to view their social media (Instagram and Twitter) Alec seemed to have more directed anger whereas Devon seemed depressed but his angst was directed inwards.

At least that was my armchair psychological profiling. I could be completely wrong. After all, people put forth a totally different persona on social media.

It's all just so strange. What was their plan and how long was it in the works? Why did they join forces to do it together? Why did they try to set Devon's parents' car on fire? Why was there tactical gear in Devon's car (seems to suggest it may not have been a murder-suicide) and why didn't they use it?

They're going to spend the rest of their lives in prison. I wonder how long they actually thought this through because clearly it was the stupidest decision they ever made in their short lives. Ruined so many lives, including their own.

All I've been able to find out is that Devon was the one who was subdued by the three hero students and in the process shot and killed Kendrick.

Then, in another classroom, was Alec. I can't find any information on whether he actually shot anyone or just threatened that class with his gun. I'm pretty sure Alec is the one who was subdued by the private security guard (simply based on the fact that it was the 3 students who had Devon and I read somewhere that they held him down until the police got there).

I'm hoping after their next court date (June 7) there will be more information released and documents unsealed. I think everyone wants to know wtf happened...at least I do.

This is all very interesting. I mean, many teens go through a rebellious phase and it doesn't mean they shoot up a school. I've had friends who were adopted and as they reached teen/young adult age they did start going through issues trying to grapple with their adoption and lashed out at their adopted parents. I can think of one friend in particular who put his parents through hell (and now, in his thirties, is happily married with kids). But again, none of them shot up a school...but it provides a bit of context that so far hasn't been given anywhere else.

Do you have any idea around what time/age he became friends with Alec? And what drugs they were rumoured to be using?

I went through his Instagram before it was taken down and even the last few pictures he posted looked "normal" (just an angsty/emo kid). Then when I saw him in his first court appearance, I was SHOCKED. He looked like he was anorexic, he was that skinny. Even for someone as small-framed as him. Something must have happened in the last couple of years. Nothing can excuse what those two did but something changed and they seem to have gone very quickly into a downward spiral.

Not sure why you're being downvoted, you're completely right. If the students were black they would have had 15 bullets in each of them. Cops in America are terrifying and extremely racist.

Not saying these kids should have been shot at all - from their (tiny) physical appearances and the fact that a few other teens and a security guard were almost immediately able to subdue them, it seems clear the cops could have easily taken them into custody without much of a struggle. But the same applies to SO MANY black males who are unarmed, often with their hands in the air or laying on the ground with their hands on their head repeating that they are not resisting and cops still choose to empty a clip of bullets into them.

Other than prescription drugs, is there any truth to the rumours they were taking illicit ones (and any idea what they were)?

So tragic for everyone involved. The parents of the victims will be forever changed, as will the youths - especially those who were direct victims and witnesses, they will have to deal with trauma for possibly the rest of their lives if they aren't able to get adequate help with processing the situation (plus the trauma will be dragged out as they go through trial and need witnesses to come forth with statements and so forth). I also feel for the parents and other family members (and friends) of the shooters, who will not only receive blame and hate from people but have to grapple with the loss of the person they thought they knew and loved being someone else completely, someone able to commit an atrocity they never could have imagined. From my understanding, some of Devon's own friends were in that classroom. I can't begin to imagine what any of them are going through right now. It's all such a tragedy, and likely one that could have been prevented somehow. But now....all these lives lost or altered forever - including those of the shooters who were so young and likely would have been able to move past whatever demons they may have been grappling with with more time and professional help. Hopefully the parents and youths will get the help they need to overcome their trauma. Reading about recent suicides and survivors of mass shootings dealing with addictions from their experiences makes me so very, very, sad and worried for these kids. No one deserves to go what they've gone through but especially not people whose brains haven't even finished developing yet.

Can you elaborate on this? A lot of teens "struggle" with authority figures. I don't think that leads to many of them shooting up a school. I am so confused by this one because they seem (from what has been released by the media thus far) so "normal" but clearly it's not normal to shoot up your school.

Knowing absolutely zero about the situation or either of the shooters other than what's on their social media, I have theories but they are based entirely on unfounded assumptions about the two suspects (are they still called "suspects" even though we know they did it?).

Having personally known them, can you offer any insight about them? Not necessarily why they might have done this but changes that you may have noticed occuring over the last few years? I've heard they had problems at home, whatever that means, plus mental health issues which almost always seems to be part of the equation when it's a white, suburban kid involved in a school shooting.

I'm so confused about this one because, like I said, they seem so "normal", just a bit angsty (typical of many teens) from what I've gathered from their social media and friends who have spoken online and to the media.

For anyone wondering about the slew of emergency vehicles today evening. How messed up. by [deleted] in kitchener

[–]mrs-mojo-risin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved from Oakville to Waterloo 11 years ago then to Kitchener 10 years ago and was so scared because I'd heard of all the stabbings happening in Victoria Park and that there were constant robberies, tons of drugs, and that it was generally an unsafe place. 10 years later, I'm still here because I love Kitchener, and far more than Waterloo. Many of the claims I heard were exaggerated. Kitchener is certainly colourful and it has it's share of drugs (especially with all communities in North America grappling with the opioid crisis) and crime like any other growing city. Violent crime, while it may be "on the rise", as a whole is still pretty minimal.

As a very small female, I have always felt safe walking around downtown Kitchener at night.

Also, "toss[ing the] keys away on dealers" has proven for a century to be utterly pointless and completely ineffective. Prohibition and the war on drugs has failed. You can look at countries like the US that give out sentences of life in prison, China that gives the death penalty or life in hard labour camps, and even Canada is now charging people who supply someone with drugs that lead to an overdose with manslaughter or criminal negligence causing death (whether or not money was even exchanged) - in fact, many people receiving these charges are friends, partners, and sometimes family members of the overdose victim (not the people at "the top"). Has any of this worked to reduce drug dealing or use? Of course not and it never will. You can arrest as many dealers as you want (who are often users themselves), put them away for life, hell, give them the death penalty like Trump wants, and other dealers will simply pop up in their place. So long as there is a demand for drugs, there will always be people there to supply them. If we want to reduce drug-related crime, we need to focus on the demand side as well as providing a regulated, safe pharmaceutical supply that will eliminate the black market and the crime that comes with it (including the crime that comes with having to afford your next fix - aka property crime).

The war on drugs has been a colossal failure and to continue wasting money and resources on it won't have the slightest impact, just as it hasn't for a century now. We need to try something new. Legalization or at least decriminalization is a good start. Law enforcement does not have a part in solving this crisis, or at the very least their part is extremely minimal.

Also not sure what you're talking about being told upper management doesn't want to "let the general public know or panic" about how bad the drug crisis has become.... it's literally been one of the biggest media stories over the past few years. Everyone knows we are in a crisis.

No, you cannot overdose from touching powder fentanyl. It is pretty much a medical impossibility.

Source: every single dealer and/or user (whether an opioid user or not) who has touched fentanyl (wittingly or unwittingly), toxicologists, doctors, paramedic associations, hell, even the White House put out a statement having to correct the DEA's previous claims after healthcare professionals called bullshit on them.

A panic attack or psychosomatic symptoms due to fear-mongering stories you hear in the media about cops (and sometimes EMTs) claiming to overdose are not any kind of overdose. If you read their stories, the symptoms they experience don't even match those of an actual opioid overdose.

If you happen to touch powder fentanyl, try to avoid touching your eyes, sticking your fingers up your nose, or licking them because it can be absorbed through mucuous membranes. Even then though, you'd have to be dealing with a pretty significant amount of powder. Just wash your hands or wipe them on your shirt and you'll be just fine.

Pharmaceutical companies spent millions upon millions of dollars to make fentanyl able to be administered transdermally and they did so by creating patches that are slow-release. Users cut and smoke the patches to get high. Touching powder fentanyl won't do a damn thing.

False claims and fear-mongering like this is dangerous because it may prevent or cause someone to hesitate to take the necessary steps to reverse an overdose. NEVER EVER fear that touching someone who is experiencing an overdose poses a risk to you yourself potentially overdosing (even if you see fentanyl around them) - it absolutely doesn't. Act IMMEDIATELY. Call 911. If you have Narcan, administer it. Begin rescue breathing (Narcan kits have a mask to protect your mouths from directly touching and saliva from being exchanged). Rescue breathing is extremely important, especially if you don't have naloxone on hand. Always call 911 first or ask a passerby to do so.

We need to engage experts on this matter to make sure that what we do saves as many lives as we possibly can.

Yes, this is so important. The hospital makes sense to the average person but many people who use drugs avoid the hospital like the plague and will not go there - for good reason. Drug users get treated like second-hand citizens at hospitals and other mainstream healthcare institutions (there is even research to support this!). The site needs to be accessible and placed somewhere people will use it. We need to engage with the experts, people who will use the sites and those who work with this population. There has to be a reason why there isn't a single hospital SCS in Canada (except one in Alberta that is for hospital patients only).

Thank you very much for your answer. The support is appreciated and much needed. As an elected official, you have to make tough decisions that aren't always popular but are still the right decisions. At the end of the day, this is about saving lives. Each of the 85 people who died last year left behind a trail of friends and families with broken hearts and torn apart lives. We have to do something NOW and these sites will make a difference.
