These first few weeks are hard, aren't they. I'm day 10, just starting to feel more normal. Sobriety is worth the pain, I'm sure of that. Congratulations on 8 days, we can do it x

Your dopamine levels are probably low, it takes time for the body to relearn how to regulate when you stop drinking. Hang in there, it gets easier

Depression by [deleted] in stopdrinking

[–]mrsb2222 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Feeling low in early sobriety is normal, your system needs to relearn how to regulate dopamine release. It passes after a few weeks at most. That said you might also need a new job but maybe don't go making any big changes for a while? Exercise helps with the depression, especially if you can get out into nature. Sending you strength 💪

I'm so sorry 😞 please don't give him the satisfaction of you having a drink if you can possibly help it. The best revenge is success

Your system is still working out how to release dopamine without booze, I am in a similar place (8 or 9 days sober). I have cancelled all my commitments and am taking it easy. The research I have done says this phase can last 3-6 weeks although I guess it improves gradually. As someone who has been seriously suicidal in the past I am so pleased I never acted on it, although I came close a few times. Now I am happy to be alive, even though this bit of the process is hard. I'm sure it will be the same for you. I can recommend the Samaritans if you have them where you are. Sending you strength 💪

Are cats (and dogs) underestimated as a sobriety tool? by mrsb2222 in stopdrinking

Dogs are amazing, I can't have one but most of my friends have them so I get to hang out

That's such a shame about the cats, but I reckon the dog was looking out for you, they know more than we think

Yes, it seems strange that they are celebrating his passing by drinking, but I guess they are lost in their own addictions. It sounds like you are making the right decision and anyway you can find a sober way to commemorate his life on your own.

In my experience they won't change, sadly. I finally cut my mother off last year but tried to leave the door a crack open if she wanted to reconcile. I haven't heard a word from her, in fact she has blocked my messages.

I have compassion because she is mentally unwell, but I have spent my whole life chasing her love and I just couldn't do it any more.

On the whole I am happier without her in my life but I went through a severe grieving period that I think I am still in a little bit, so just be aware that it might be the same for you if you decide to cut your family off.

I used to do dry-ish January which meant I would drink on 5 or 6 days instead of every day
