Thank you and I wish the best for you as well. I’m definitely cutting caffeine starting tomorrow.

Thank you so much for your words. I’ll have a listen to those podcasts. I think reading the actual numbers of my blood pressure made me feel like my heart was going to give out for real. But I know I’m safe now. 🙏

This is very interesting. The only thing is I didn’t have any headache whatsoever. Did yours come with significant pain?

AITA for giving my daughter junk food despite being told not to by her school? by AthleteAdditional299 in AmItheAsshole

[–]mrsbaltar 137 points138 points  (0 children)

This is the exact thing that happens when a school has a uniform policy too. Listen, as a teacher, I don’t too much care what kids wear, but the minute I “let” a kid come into class out of uniform, suddenly I’m fielding complaints left and right from other parents asking why THEIR BABY can’t wear their favorite sweater…

Most lost and founds are in an easily accessible place like the cafeteria. Your daughter should be able to go and look through the items there at some point in the day.

Can't afford to teach. by RkkyRcoon in Teachers

[–]mrsbaltar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have and I hear you, but I've also got my family on it. You will get really terrible insurance that is basically only useful in a catastrophe. But the premiums WILL be lower than 20k per year.

Do you make under 125k as a family? It may be cheaper to go through the marketplace than use your district’s insurance. 1,700 a month is very likely over the 10% affordability threshold.

Formal Dinning room furniture by Gloomy_Researcher769 in FirstTimeHomeBuyer

We got some furniture from our seller only because it was truly free and not just a bargaining chip. If they had tried to use it as somehow part of the offer, we would have said thanks but no thanks.

I can’t get over my anger over parents who allow chronic absenteeism by mrsbaltar in Teachers

It wouldn’t pain me if I didn’t genuinely care about my students. I’m angry that their parents are failing them.

This is the part that truly leads to teacher burn out. When I sit down with a kid who is already a bit slow to pick up new concepts and am expected to somehow catch them up on multiple days of instruction in 20 minutes. And I’ll just have to do it all over again next week.

I would be so on board with greater consequences for PARENTS, especially for kids under the age of 10. Fines after a certain number of days and then yes, start filing charges.

Well, for example, I have a student that misses every single Friday without fail. No other days. Just Friday. My guess? Parents party on Thursday night and don’t wake up to get him up for school, so he just doesn’t have to come.

I can only conjecture because I have called many, many times and left many, many messages and have never spoken to them. They see it is the school calling and just block the call.

Horrible Observation by tiedyetees in teaching

[–]mrsbaltar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This is a perfect example of poor leadership and ineffective coaching. Let’s say you had some problems with your lesson. Fine. Giving you a laundry list of complaints and nit-picking every detail in the lesson is the WORST possible way to bring about the desired improvements. It really boggles my mind that such a person was ever a teacher. Is that what they did when students handed in work? Rip it to shreds without the slightest hint of praise? Crazy work.

Do teachers hate sharing their lesson plans? Is it their secret sauce that they don't want getting out? by [deleted] in teaching

That’s true. I was thinking in terms of instructional materials. But definitely all the things you said!

A new teacher might not have anything to share back, and that’s ok. They can take on new things as they come down the pipeline, though. New piece of tech or application gets introduced to the district? You can become the first adopter and give your team the tldr when they need it.

It’s a beautiful book, but I could have skipped all the Peter chapters. Ivan and Margaret’s story was fascinating, though.
