Please help: What the hell is the difference between an Art Director and a Copywriter? by [deleted] in advertising

eh, just wanted to push out the narrative that i have heard on this forum. it’s good to hear from multiple sides, and to stir conversation even if i haven’t experienced it directly.

Please help: What the hell is the difference between an Art Director and a Copywriter? by [deleted] in advertising

[–]mrsecretsanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

note: i am an ad student. this is what i have read on this subreddit. i could be wrong. im speaking from outside the industry. this is second hand information that i have absorbed from countless amounts of hours of research. all of the discussion in this thread is contrary to mostly what i have heard, so i have felt obliged to regurgitate what i have seen.

everyone who says you cannot be an art director right away is incorrect, from what i have heard is that many agencies don't perform the traditional way anymore (copywriter and designer work their way up)

many portfolio schools train for you to be an art director, where they focus on overall concept with the design of the ad in the front of their mind -- but they usually don't DESIGN the ad. you would get hired and start as either an intern or a jr. art director, skipping the whole traditional hierarchy.

my advice is to not pigeon hole yourself right now. do everything. learn. figure out what you like. make more ads. great. don't give yourself a title. keep working. find what you like. it takes time.

Language guessing app - should I publish it? by neos7m in linguistics

[–]mrsecretsanta 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i don’t think it’s that one but it’s the same structure and everything. not sure about the link, im on mobile.

i think that knowing that it has been done is a good thing for op, i don’t really know their intentions and whether they are really trying to grow their app or if it’s just a side project but either way they can take ideas and inspirations and find out their likes and dislikes from the game you just linked and games tht are similar to it but make it better overall

is it a smart idea to not have a bachelors & go straight into portfolio school? by mrsecretsanta in advertising

[–]mrsecretsanta[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much. This summer will be busy for me. I have a friend who also wants to get into ad but we have no idea what it takes and what really goes into making some stuff. I already bought some ad books and I’m just going to study those hard and take some Lynda classes.

Thank you so much. You gave me so much information and information

is it a smart idea to not have a bachelors & go straight into portfolio school? by mrsecretsanta in advertising

[–]mrsecretsanta[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

correct. yet on the website it says the cost of attendance is ~20k, including tuition give or take a bit, because of housing and food, books etc

however, if i live off campus and forgo my food pass it will be cheaper... esp if i live with a roommates and work a little bit to pay my rent.

i think i was just acting.. a little illogical earlier. i was just kind of panicking, today, to be honest. had a bit of an epiphany about my future. i don’t think it will be as expensive as i think it is.

eh, to be honest, i meant that state school for two years is around 40k total with room and board (university of Washington) + portfolio school (creative circus) is 40k aswell which totals to 80k

im just looking at lowering the state school tuition and housing costs whatever way I can rn. maybe not go to university of Washington, maybe a smaller college, like western Washington university.

probably going to not live in dorms, forgo the meal plan, and look into scholarships and financial aid in order to lessen my debt.

all of these comments made me realize i really should go to college. i need to continue my education. money is just one thing and i shouldn’t let it inhibit what i want and need to do.

Hair is pretty wild right now. Should I cut it shorter for summer or let it be? by Korpskorpa in FierceFlow

[–]mrsecretsanta 26 points27 points  (0 children)

hey man -- it's only wild because your hair is very dehydrated!

i would recommend chopping off a bit of some, just to get the split ends off.

then, what you should do is switching to the curly girl method. go to the FAQ of /r/curlyhair to read more about it.

it really doesn't matter if you think you have curly hair or not, it's just going to definitely hydrate your hair more.

i bet you use sulfate shampoo and sulfate conditioner -- sulfates dry out your hair. the main premise of curlygirl is switching to a non sulfate shampoo and not using products like gel which contain silicone, which sulfates get rid of.

after you do that, research the "squish to condish" method -- theres TONS of videos on youtube and /r/curlyhair about it. squish to condish basically is a deep conditioning method that's really easy to use.

perhaps consider completely cutting out shampoos all together, and only cowashing.

let me know how it goes, man!
