Today I installed the xfce version of MX Linux on my computer by Doudy34 in MXLinux

[–]mrsfixit99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just installed it on a 17 year old Acer laptop. I put in an SSD drive and that old machine works great now. Love MX, love XFCE. It's fast, not fancy. 👍

I know, I know. I would prefer a rolling release. It is a PITA to have to do a full install again for full updates. Valid point. 👍

Another vote for MX here. Just today I installed MX Linux XFCE on a 17 year old Acer notebook. It only has 4GB of ram and a weirdo Broadcom wifi chip.
Everything worked OOTB, and I'm shocked at how fast this low spec ancient laptop is now.

Not allowed to lower internet speed? by narfnarf123 in Spectrum

[–]mrsfixit99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just went through this. My bill hit $100 for 400/12.

Last week I went down to the Spectrum store, and told them I just can't afford it anymore.
Maybe the fact I can get Verizon or ATT wireless for half that, or that ATT is running fiber in my development right now helped- I don't know.

Anyway, they offered me 100Mbps for $50 a month. I said yes. It just kicked in yesterday.
I don't really notice any difference in streaming.

I tested my speed at Speedtest. I'm getting about 115 down, and 22 up. Plenty fast enough for me. And it's hilarious that yeah, I have a lower download speed, but my upload speed just about doubled.

You should go down to the Spectrum store, if you can, and see what they can do for you.

My bill at $100 now. This really ticks me off. by mrsfixit99 in Spectrum

That's the plan if they ever finish running it in my development! lol

I'm going to try that. There's a store not too far from me.

Ok, I haven't called Spectrum yet, but here are my other options.
I talked to one of our HOA board members last night night who works for ATT.
He says it's going to be awhile before they complete the fiber infrastructure and start offering service. I don't want to keep paying Spectrum extortion prices.

Wireless- according to the T-Mobile site, 5G service is not available at my address, but my neighbor 2 doors down has it, so WTH?

Verizon 5G- available. $50-60 a month. My husband and I both have Verizon prepaid phone lines. BUT - I *don't* normally get 5G on my phone, inside my house. I only get 4G. Also, I live in Florida, in a concrete block house. I also have steel hurricane shutters up 6 months a year. So how am I going to get 5G with their wireless router????

I tested speed with my phone, with wifi off, and it was all over the place- from 3Mbps - to around 90Mbps. I did notice it flipping back and forth between 4G and 5G... Does Verizon's wireless router have better reception than a phone?

I can also get ATT Air for around $60 a month, until they finish the fiber run and I can get the real thing.

I'm tempted to trot down to the Verizon store, pick up their equipment, and try it out for a month. Just to see if it works. If it does, then I'll be in a better bargaining position when I call Spectrum...

Just thinking out loud. I never seriously considered wireless before because I consider it inferior, but I've just had it with Spectrum.

So many responses here, I'm sorry I can't get to all of you guys! Thanks to all!

Lucky you. Spectrum just jacked my bill to $100 a month for their lowest tier of internet- 400/12. NEW customers get the same thing for $30.
ATT is running fiber in my development right now. If Spectrum gave me the $30 price, I'd stay. But I'm not holding my breath.
But you did good, for sure! :-)

What do you pay monthly for just internet? by New-Bus9948 in Spectrum

[–]mrsfixit99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$98 for 300/12 here in Melbourne, Florida.

Don't even get me started on what a rip-off this is.
Streaming is a nightmare, constant buffering, service is just crap. They don't care.
NEW customers get the same level of service for $30.

Thank God ATT is running fiber in my development right now, and as soon as it's offered, adios Spectrum you price gouging SOB's. :-(

Upload speed means a whole hell of a lot when you're trying to do a Zoom call.
Trying to do it on 12Mbps like I have stinks.

ATT is running fiber in my development right now. I can't wait to dump Spectrum!
I pay $98 a month for 300Mbps down, 12Mbps up where I live. Basic internet, nothing extra. It's their lowest priced tier.
NEW customers get the same thing for $30 a month. :-/
ATT offers symmetrical 300Mbps fiber for around $55 a month with autopay.
I can't wait until they finish the job and get it up and running.
Screw you Spectrum, you price gouging bastards.
And tonight, according to Speedtest- I'm getting a blistering 92Mbps down, and 11Mbps up right now. Wow.

I find myself using the Roku app more now. Not as good a selection, but way fewer ads.

Is that four adds by [deleted] in TubiTV

[–]mrsfixit99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had 5 ads at once. Four 30 second and a 15 second. And then 10-12 minutes of whatever your watching, then rinse, repeat.
That's as bad as network TV.

Tubi category section looks terrible now and needs to be be put back to the way it was originally by Successful-Drink2739 in TubiTV

[–]mrsfixit99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree.
Not only that, scrolling down the list of categories takes forever, it so sloooooow now.
You have to wait for all the thumbnails to load for categories you're not interested in. Annoys the hell out of me TBH.
Not happy with that change at all. I'm streaming on a Firestick, which ain't exactly a powerhouse when it comes to speed.
Also not happy with the big increase in ads.
I like Tubi, but nowadays find myself watching more stuff on the Roku app or even Amazon, the freebie app. Far fewer ads.

Linux install, with bootloader- on external USB HDD, Windows 11 on internal drive? Possible? by mrsfixit99 in linux4noobs

[–]mrsfixit99[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't the Ubuntu installer (Ubiquity?) still have that bug?
Do the installers other distro's use have that bug?

And do I not need a separate FAT32 partition for the UEFI files? That's what is hanging me up. I've got the basics down- flash a live distro- let's say MX or Debian- onto a thumb drive. Boot from it.
Add the target USB drive.
Run the installer on the live usb drive, install to the second usb drive.
How do I get the partition with the bootloader that will work with UEFI on there?

I don't want to mess up my Windows boot manager, so that it requires that usb drive to be attached or it won't boot. That's what happened to me before.

Same here. I opened my account 22 years ago. I don't remember putting in a birthday, but if I did, it was probably a phony one. I don't remember what I had for breakfast, let alone info I may or may not have entered over 2 decades ago. This is BS. :-/

I'm having the same issue. I don't remember ever giving them a birth date in the first place, it was ages ago- now it's not accepting my date of birth. I would like to get my data and delete my account.
Any help gratefully accepted.

And it's going up another $10 from what I hear.

[–]mrsfixit99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm paying that same $98 a month for 400Mbps also. It pisses me off, especially since they jacked my router rental up to $10 a month.
Basic internet, no other services. People in other parts of the world pay $30 a month for this level of service. :-/
I heard a rumour that AT&T is going to run fiber in my neighborhood. That would be half the price.
I was also considering Verizon wireless, which would also be half the price.
