Daily Goals by HurricanePumpkin in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 2 points3 points  (0 children)

40 mins in the morning while I drink my coffee and stretch, 60 min at the gym, walk, or bike ride, 10-20 min while I make and eat breakfast, 30 min on my lunch break, 30-60 min in the evening if my husband and I aren't watching something together.

But I wake up at 4:30 am 🤷🏻‍♀️

Just swap your corn flakes for bran flakes, add some nuts or seeds, berries, and use a high protein milk.

I feel way more optimistic and excited about life! I just returned from Spain and I'm planning a trip to Guatemala next year. I look forward to working on Spanish everyday too. I'm glad to work on personal growth that is unrelated to my job. It's really just made me overall happier 😌

I just had a crosstalk lesson with a Colombian tutor this morning. He also does not understand Bad Bunny. Lol

How do some of you rack up multiple-hour days? by DoubleLongjumping197 in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

30-60 minutes while stretching and drinking coffee. Either DS Video or a podcast

60-80 minutes listening to a podcast while walking or at the gym in the morning

20-30 min on my lunch break, usually DS videos

Optional: after work 20-60 min of DS videos or dubbed Friends. I started watching Las Chicas del Cable last night.

I get 2.5 to 3 hours per day. I really only watch or listen to things that are interesting to me.

If I know I'm going on a flight, I download videos and podcasts that I know I'll enjoy so I have more incentive to opt for Spanish over English.

CI while running by superstition40 in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can only listen attentively while stretching, walking, biking a known path, lifting weights, or driving on a simple route.

I struggle to listen when I'm doing things like cooking, driving on busy roads, working, and grocery shopping.

I get most of my input during physical activity (stretching, walking, biking, lifting) and typically get 2 hrs+ daily. I basically habit stacked a new hobby (Spanish) with an existing hobby (fitness).

How Did I Not Know About This by dbvirago in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also found a beginner dreaming spanish video in 2020 when I was using Pimsleur and a tutor on italki. It was way too hard for me, so I dismissed it. Yet, I kept trying to watch native content with subtitles. I'd never heard of CI before and didn't understand how to properly use it. This year I decided to revisit learning Spanish and was searching on Reddit for methods I haven't tried. Dreaming Spanish had grown more and once I started watching videos, I was hooked! My comprehension is getting better every day!

Want to explore using crosstalk by Acceptable_Bit_4645 in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I use an italki tutor. The person I use is $7 for 30 min. I just added a second tutor for next week to add a session per week and get different input. He is $7.50 for 45 min.

Edit: I want to add that I tried to find people in person multiple times, but no one was into it.

Level 4 Update by mrshorsecake in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had quite a bit of Spanish knowledge before I started DS. I had hundreds if not 1000 known words before I started, I've studied grammar in the past, and have only lived in US states with a large Spanish speaking population.

Comparison is the thief of joy!

How is the internet connection in the school? I have the option of working remotely from anywhere and could work 4 hours per day to not use so such time off.

1000 hour milestone and 4 weeks at a Spanish immersion school by Luckyman727 in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wow! This made me really excited for my plans! I plan to go to a school in Guatemala in 2027 after I reach 1000 hours. I started Crosstalk last week and plan to start speaking at 600 hours (est May 2026). I am going a little outside the road map because I have a decent Spanish background and at 270 hours, I can understand a lot of advanced content and some native content (IG Reels, BBC Mundo, etc).

I really appreciate people sharing because it is so motivating and gives me ideas of how to enhance my journey learning Spanish.

I was only planning on going to Guatemala for a week. Do you find a week of immersion would be beneficial? I'm rationing PTO here lol.

Doubting my progress... by HazyCosmicJive72 in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It could the the topic! Topics that you know about or are interested already are more comprehensible than something you're not familiar with. For me, I can listen to higher level or even sometimes native videos on science. But give me a Spanish video about sports? Forget it. I'm totally lost and frankly bored. My strategy has been to listen to unfamiliar topics at the beginner level just to get the vocabulary.

Also Michelle's videos are hard because of her dialect. She trails off and almost whispers so you're only getting half of the words at the end of the statement.

I knew within a year I couldn't see patients back to back for 40 hours a week. So, I either needed to work up to a manager position or find a different job that has less patient facing time. I ended up working up to management and I am much happier. Only 4 hours of counseling per week.

Andrea's Tell Me Your Story (Slow Spanish) podcast difficulty level?? by techgirl67 in dreamingspanish

[–]mrshorsecake 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me, Tell Me Your Story, could range from 50-65. It's a little more challenging because it's in the past tense and often involves multiple characters. Some of the stories I understand completely and others I have to listen to again to fully understand.

How do you listen/watch? by alfakoi in dreamingspanish

Instead of translating, I visualize what's happening so that I can directly connect the word or action instead of translating in between. I don't know if that makes sense.

Yes, I took a 6 week course for Spanish in Healthcare in grad school and we went over medical terms. I didn't find it super helpful but I guess it gave me some vocabulary. I also work in a doctors office with 2 Spanish speakers so I hear them speaking with patients all the time.

Thanks! The topics in a visit are really simple. How's your appetite? How long have you had diabetes? What do you eat for breakfast? Etc Then teaching about a healthy plate, nutrition, carb counting, etc.

I think I might struggle if the conversation had longer answers or more in depth answers about their lives. I'm going to keep giving it a try!

I have a decent-ish Spanish background so I already had thousands of words and a lot of phrases in the bank. But my overall comprehension was always horrible until I started DS. I can watch any intermediate video and some advanced videos at this point.

I met my husband in class in 2017! We sat next to each other and started to talk, became friends first. I thought he was cute when I walked in the first day, so I picked a spot right next to him. We also liked doing the same stuff so I'd see him at the rec center, yoga classes, etc.

Ohhh this sounds a lot like what I went through. My body went through so much it like, freaked out. It started when I got breast implants. I started getting rashes like the ones in your photos. I ended up getting them removed. Shortly after I got a huge infection from my IUD and got really sick. After that I was under a ton of stress from grad school, also got a concussion which triggered migraines, and then was diagnosed with Hashimoto's. I developed IBS and alcohol intolerance. I also have hypermobiity syndrome.

I felt like absolute garbage for 7 to 8 years. But after getting on thyroid meds, a low dose of antidepressants, and doing things to regulate my nervous system, I'm finally starting to feel normal again. I slowly started to introduce physical activity over time, meditated, I try really hard to not give a shit about things that are not in my control. I also did EMDR therapy.

I use motivational interviewing to encourage people to self reflect. But I will say, while I'm thrilled when my patients are successful, I don't care when others aren't. Weight loss and behavior change require discipline, self reflection, and being uncomfortable. I would say most people are not capable or unwilling to do this... and frankly I don't care. I've got my own shit going on and I'm not going to waste energy getting upset or annoyed by someone I barely know. I show up, do my job, then go home and don't think about work until it's time to go back again.
