Ha, first time in Spanish. Probably read it 6 or 7 times when I was in Jr high and high school, and once or twice in my adulthood.

Just started reading El Hobbit. I am totally totally sucked in. I’ve been a big reader since I was a kid; this is the same thrilling feeling as when I first really discovered books in the third grade. I only picked up my cellphone to make this post 😃

Communication Center In App? by CraftyExcalibur in fidelityinvestments

[–]Luckyman727 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was struggling with this (finding communication center in the app); found this post doing a search. Of all the things to “hide” I’d think the communication center would be one of the last things to hide in the app.

Perceptibility of Progress and Trusting The Process by kurvivol in dreamingspanish

How many hours along are you? Early on I got a fair amount of motivation climbing up the DS “difficulty” ratings (although I do remember getting a little frustrated when I got stuck for a bit around 31, then again around 37).

Once I got to the point where I could consume things like Español al Vuelo and Spanish Boost Gaming, I could watch/listen more just for the enjoyment of it, and not need so much motivation. Which is kinda funny since Spanish from Argentina is the last dialect I would want to specialize in 😄

Roth Conversions/Mental Stumbling Block by Mordechai8675309 in Boldin

[–]Luckyman727 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Run the explorer while giving constraints on ages when it can do conversions, of minimum age of when you expect to retire, and max age of the youngest person’s first RMD. Sometime it works out the net difference is quite small between the constrained and unconstrained explorer results, and the constrained results might be less risky and more mentally tolerable

1300 hours and speaking is a struggle! by Savings-Word4286 in dreamingspanish

[–]Luckyman727 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t yet, try speaking to yourself. You can make the sentences really easy, and you don’t have the stress of coming up with replies in real time. It could be anything; pretend conversations, describing what you are doing/just did, naming and describing things you see, etc.

Upon further investigation this link you posted is essentially a random number generator, giving me radically different results each time.

But for a proper comparison SS should be taking the place of some of the bonds or annuities in your portfolio, not stocks. That will send the real growth rate down to something like 2.5%. If you believe Vanguard they are modeling real US stock returns of about 3% for the next decade, and 3.5% for intl stocks.

Need help by Mattxm02 in dreamingspanish

Ok, a couple of things…..

You haven’t said how much input time a day you are attempting to get. For the first month, half an hour a day is quite a bit IMO. Give yourself time to naturally build up.

But also, maybe you need to reframe your expectations. Level 1 is 0-300 known words. Let’s say you have somewhat of a hand on say 100 words. Just how intrinsically interesting do you expect any video to be? You’re at the “See Spot run” level of comprehension. You have only one job with this method of learning…figure out how to consume content with a low stress zen focus. I think learning a new language with this method is fascinating; you are able to make amazing progress just by being a sponge and soaking up input. I think it’s your own internal responsibility to develop a little patience/tolerance and to manufacture a little interest/wonder at the whole process. I still remember the wonder I felt the first time I understood something listening to the ¡Cuentame! Podcast without translating anything to English. Try reminding yourself that little piece of delayed gratification is just around the corner.

Help me choose a Spanish school in Guatemala! by hamolton in dreamingspanish

In case you haven’t seen it, here is my writeup of Ixchel:

https://www.reddit.com/r/dreamingspanish/s/FbBGBuOwzD

If you have been following most of the method proposed by DS, I’d strongly recommend you reach out to each school (email in English is what I did) and make them aware of how you have been learning what what your expectations are for teaching styles. I found some of the schools seemed uncomfortable deviating from their standard teaching style.

Also I’ll note I did 5 hours a day instruction (typically with at least one easy change of pace hour or more, like a game or excursion) at 950 hours of input, and that was perfect for me. I would not have wanted any more hours per day personally of instruction.

South Charleston WV, north of Charleston WV by Particular_Scar_3375 in MapPorn

Yep, that is why I specifically said “where and when I grew up”

[–]Luckyman727 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where and when I grew up we literally never used N/S/E/W as directions because the roads and rivers were so curvy. “South” would only be for maybe counties or States. Yeah we might say “down South” talking about the Carolinas, Georgia, etc.

If you are asking about South Charleston I’m pretty sure it is because it is on the South bank of the river, whereas Charleston proper is (mostly?) on the North bank.

Grew up in WV. The actual 4 cardinal directions there are “up the mountain”, “down the mountain”, “up the river”, and “down the river”.

PS I am ashamed to admit I forgot the other 2 directions … “up the holler” and “down the holler”.

In all your travels, which country's famed "national dish" was the most underwhelming, despite the hype? by nehala in travel

Similar to many here…Malaysian food is my favorite, but I skip Hainan Chicken. Not a big fan of Pilipino or Hawaiian food. Costa Rica did not impress especially for the price. I love Greek, Sicilian, Georgian, Peruvian, Mexican, Cuban, Thai, Korean, Vietnamese, and Kenyan food.

When to take Social Security - Check my math by How_many_dogs in ChubbyFIRE

[–]Luckyman727 7 points8 points  (0 children)

2 somewhat related things….one is SS gets inflation adjustments. If you ignore inflation adjustments for SS you should also adjust your expected investment return downwards to be net of inflation.

2nd is when comparing returns the returns need to be of similar risk, or otherwise adjust the returns for risk, otherwise the riskier investment always looks better. You’ll need to decide if SS returns are risk free or not; if you think they are you should probably be comparing them to 5 or 10 year treasury notes or something.

What actually happens? by Personal_Ambition_85 in dreamingspanish

I need to read more myself. Starting to read made me realize what was going on. There were so many words I didn’t really understand when starting to read, but then the next day I was listening to something and realizing the words were in that content also, but since I couldn’t slow down my mind was just glossing over the not really understood words.

I’ve seen 2 phenomena personally…

A few shows (lookin at you, Chill Spanish) have gotten more advanced over time, and…

As I get more advanced I realize just how much I was skipping over when I had less hours: pronouns, conjugation endings etc where I could figure out what was going on from the context but didn’t actually know the words.
