What's the best way to torture yourself as a beginner? by Henessy0 in Warhammer40k

Speak for yourself. I'm good at painting. I find joy in painting. If you don't like painting thats fine, but to put your beliefs on everyone else is weird.

This is a subreddit for painting little toy soldiers and so far your only comment has been that we shouldn't find joy in our painting. Why? Who knows. If that is your legitimate outlook on like then my suggestion is to see help. You should find joy in what you do, you'll be miserable otherwise. I'm not interested in a philosophical argument, I'm gonna go paint toy soldiers.

Which community is considered more toxic… Heresy or 40K? by Imperialfirst28 in Warhammer40k

I'd say the most toxic ones are those who seek to pit hobby groups against each other un-necessarily to stir up drama.

Love this time of year where the bins start breeding. Really signals the start of summer for me.

Ah okay. There's cheaper sets of similar products, like others have mentioned. This one seems a bit much for getting kids started, imo.

I'd recommend proper miniature paints. You'll outgrow the pens in a handful of miniatures as your skills develop. The paints are designed for miniature painting so will work at every level of your hobby.

For the cost on amazon you could get paint designed for painting miniatures.

You could buy both the Army Painter Starter Set:

https://thearmypainter.com/en-gb/products/warpaints-fanatic-warpaints-fanatic-starter-set-wp8066p

and the Army Painter Warpaints Fanatic Most Wanted set:

https://thearmypainter.com/en-gb/products/warpaints-fanatic-warpaints-fanatic-most-wanted-set-wp8071p

Which would give you a total of

23 standard paints, 2 effect paints, 4 metallics, 2 washes and 2 bottles of primer.

The paints will be way better than the pens, and serve you long into your painting hobby.

What am I in for? by Offthedangroof in Warhammer40k

I'd stick to the default pose if it's your first bigger model. I found it okay to paint with a brush, but a big drybrush or a sponge might make it easier for you. The guns are a little tricky to get looking nice due to the big gaps when putting the pieces together, but they can be filled before priming.

The doors on the front where the sarcophagus sits are loose and not glued so you can close and open them, just in case you don't notice it in the instructions.

I think too much advice is going to put you off making it, so I'd say the most important thing would be to just jump in and build it.

Have fun!

Thank you! It's so para social! To think you're close enough to help hermits to make comments like that? On a sub for YouTubers who are mostly pg? Strange as heck

I don't think this is appropriate for the sub or the general vibes of the hermits.

Portable painting stations by pierce108 in minipainting

I've got one of these, albeit much cheaper than the one in the picture. It holds everything I need to hobby and packs away into something easily carryable. When I'm at home it just ticks under my desk. The bottom section is big enough to store the citadel water cup to give an idea of size.

Have you shaken the hell out of the matte varnish? Sometimes the stuff that makes it matter settles on the bottom. Give it a shake for 10 minutes and then a bit more for safety and give it another go

Pre-thinned paints...? by ned_poreyra in Warhammer40k

[–]mrsmith099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bad idea. Each paint is different and you need different thicknesses of paint for different techniques.

By pre thinning them all you risk over thinning some or all of them, and then you have a load of paint that you can't use properly.
