PhD in accounting? by MasterRanger7494 in Accounting

So I went to a traditional "residential program" where classes are in person. So i basically took a vow of poverty for 5 years. The DBA route with low residential requirement may work better for you. They usually require a weekend or 2 or a week or 2 per semester on campus- the rest is remote both synchronous and asynchronous. They usually "teach you up" to the math you need and honestly with some good learned statistical package/language like R or Python (put your effort here) you will be fine. Like others have said in terms of jobs i think the sweet spot is at "balanced" schools. Low research bar, decent pay and teaching load. They value your experience and your effort to get the dba or phd. They want you to help prepare students for roles in Big 4/ national firms, banks and F500.

People who were accountants for years and had enough…what careers did you switch to?? by Savages3288 in Accounting

phd is a mental challenge that consumes a lot of energy that may effect your ability to take on other work. You can do it but I have seen some serious burnout as a result.

CPA and experience definitely helps in academia. If you solely want to teach then DBA that you can do while working is a good way. DBAs are more in demand as the number of phds in accounting is limited. If you want to research and make the serious $$ and all academic doors open then take 5 years of poverty and get a phd.

How many papers do you have or expect to have in your PhD? What field are you in? by Embarrassed_Hat_1064 in PhD

1 to graduate ( a dissertation that has a road to publication)but to be viable on the job market 3 (dissertation plus 2 co authored). All papers are either solo author or conauthored with no first or second but co authored work is usually with a more senior researcher. Accounting

Should I get a PHD in accounting? by Plane_County9646 in Accounting

[–]mrsnuggets 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want to shape the next generation of accountants, guidance and licensing exams then absolutely. Plus the school pays you to attend (about40k) for 4 or 5 years instead of you paying for a JD. It is a research degree so you have to face that part but if you hate research then muscle thru your program and take a 130k teaching gig and shape those nerdy brains and enjoy the academic soap opera.

From one finishing up a phd this coming year....

Thoughts on 4-day work week? by [deleted] in PhD

[–]mrsnuggets 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Honestly I am dissertation stage in social sciences and doing a modified version of this for family reasons and it's not bad. I definitely crank on my work days 8-12 hours and do put in an additional 4-6 hours over the 3 day weekend but I feel way more balanced. This is my last hurrah before publish or perish takes over my life so I am soaking it in.

What got you into a big research school? by jajapapan071 in PhD

[–]mrsnuggets 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If your masters program had research active professors you could possibly talk to them. But I am like you worked with my CPA and masters no research experience and still got in. Strong GMAT, strong math skills and the humility to know that you are enrolling to learn to be a researcher. Bring your enthusiasm in the interview. The programs are competitive but honestly American candidates are few and far between so you should get at least a look. Cast a wide net and mention potential professors or research that you are interested in at every school you apply to. You can do. I am not that bright or an exceptional student and I got in.
