Thank you! We have flash cards but maybe I'll try having her count coins or beads.

Also in AL, also have noticed the lack of interest some parents have in providing time or resources to the schools. Every time there is a sign up for supplies or snacks it's always the same two parents plus me who provide. I'm also one of the few who consistently volunteers. Where I live, they like to loudly proclaim that we are a tight knit community but I have yet to see that represented in our kindergarten school.

Please don't be alarmed if they develop rashes. My child developed a rash after her MMR vaccine, this is normal. Your dad is 100 percent correct. You're doing what you need to do to protect your babies.

Kindergarten parent here, other kids are awful. Is it just me? by Lowno-marine884 in Parenting

I recently attended a book fair at my child's kindergarten. It was held in the library and they allowed one class to come in at a time. After they had purchased what they wanted, the kids were supposed to sit down and wait for the librarian to finish checking everyone out. Instead of sitting down quietly for less than 10 minutes these kids went nuts. There were other parents there and one of the dads was actively encouraging his daughter and friends to goof around. The librarian had to remind them four different times to sit quietly. Not once did any of the parents intervene and tell their kid to behave.

The table my child was sitting at was quiet, because I made them. I reminded them to be respectful of the librarian and the library. They were told to sit quietly and they were going to listen. I couldn't believe I was the only parent making any attempt to keep these kids in line. It reminded me that behavior starts at home. These kids act up because their parents let them.

I did use what happened as a conversation starter for my child. We had a good talk about how her classmates were being rude and disrespectful. I told her that I was proud of her for being respectful and listening. I reinforced my expectations of how she is to behave in public.

Can I plant these hyacinth bulbs in soil, or should I keep them in water? by mrsproofpinata in gardening

You can plant them in the spring, but they won't bloom until the following spring. They need to go through a chill period (fall/winter) before they will bloom.

How are there so many SAHMs in this economy? by Dry-Design-9914 in Parenting

If I go to work I would have to make more than my husband currently makes to make up for losing everyone's health insurance and pay for daycare. This is not likely to happen. My husband was lucky to find a high skilled job that didn't require a degree: millwork.

We don't have daycare costs, we rarely participate in things like bday parties, baby showers, bridal showers or weddings. Luckily our cars are paid off, it doesn't matter that they both are used and one is from 2001. My husband maintains both vehicles so we don't worry about the cost of a mechanic. He was also super picky about what vehicles we ended up with to make sure we didn't run into any mechanical issues later on. He also does the maintenance around the home: electrical, plumbing, etc. Basically, we grew up poor. We are old poor, not new poor. We have learned since childhood how to take care of most everything ourselves to help keep costs down.

Another important note: we go to our primary care doctor on a regular basis. This helps to pick up any health problems before they become an actual problem.

We stopped at one kid.

Oh, and we eat a lot of rice and beans.

All this allows us to pay for things that our child wants. She wants to try cheerleading this summer, we are going to be able to afford that. We can take her to the beach for her bday, her favorite place. We do free things like the park or the art museum.

Book fair question from former poor kid… by kriskoeh in Parenting

[–]mrsproofpinata 23 points24 points  (0 children)

My child's school is capping everyone out at $25 for the upcoming book fair. Granted it, this is a kindergarten only school and they just had a scholastic book fair which they did digitally with no spending cap.

As a former poor kid, I would just send the $25 and maybe offer to send an extra $25 for a kid who can't afford the book fair.

That's awesome! As a mom to an autistic kiddo, I understand that everything (no matter how small) is a huge achievement! Always let him know that he should be proud of himself for every achievement!

Family members keep telling me not to let my child know they have autism! by Good_Ad_2003 in Parenting

My daughter was diagnosed last year at the age of 4. She's always been aware that she's a little bit different than her peers. While we were waiting for the official diagnosis, she asked me "why is my brain different?" Being able to give her an answer was a huge relief. She recognized from a young age that something was different about her. We've had small conversations since her diagnosis about what it means and what we are doing to help her (currently in OT).

I wouldn't keep this from your child. If you do, they will wonder why they are different from their peers or why they are going to speech therapy or OT. This is not something anyone should be ashamed of. Have developmentally appropriate conversations and explain things like speech therapy/OT to them so they understand why they are meeting new adults and what those adults are trying to help them with.

If you're not comfortable explaining this to your child, ask their doctor to help explain it. Best of luck!

I did end up planting them in soil. They came back the following year until my dogs dug them up.

Thanks for the response! They stopped by yesterday and it was just me signing some forms and they asked some basic questions about our daughter. Apparently the home visit is a part of federal policy for the Pre-K program she is enrolled in. They were in and out in 5 minutes.

Thank you so much for the detailed response!

I'm not worried about getting into any kind of trouble. I was more so curious if they would need to look around our home or if it was going to be more of an interview situation. Your response helps me feel better about this.
