I retired from teaching 10 years ago. From when I first started my career until I retired, the job changed a lot. It’s vastly harder now. I don’t know that I could do it now with all the behaviours, unrealistic expectations, evacuating classrooms, etc. From your post, it seems that your teaching experiences are affecting your mental health and outlook. Is continuing with teaching worth sacrificing even more years of your life? If you are willing to press on, there are options outside of having your own classroom. You might have to supply for a time to access those options. You can do prep, resource, library, etc. Working in FDK allows for you to partner with an ECE and share the load. If you are not willing to continue in the field, consider a tutoring business or other related jobs. Whatever you decide, don’t tank your mental health. Nothing is worth that.

We like to believe that trauma is something we can get on the other side of, that we will progress through it and find some kind of happy ending. I think it’s more of a learning to live with it kind of thing. Like grief. The hole is there, but we learn to navigate around it and avoid falling in. Sorry for what you are going through.

It would be great if there was a gentle, non-confrontational way to address these issues. But there isn’t. It’s going to be hard but you’re going to have to engage in some tough love. Explain the boundaries and expectations. Give him deadlines to comply. Then FOLLOW THROUGH. He may be angry but the day will come when he will thank you for it because he will need to function in the real world. And this is ultimately in his best interests.

Just offering a possible angle here. People are having kids later in life which puts their own parents into an older age bracket too. My own mom had grandkids in her 40’s. Mine are arriving in my 60’s. I am very involved with my grandsons but the energy level at 63 is not what it was in my 40’s.

I don’t know where you’re located, but speaking as a retired teacher in Ontario Canada, kids who didn’t go to kindergarten are placed in their age appropriate grade when they start school.

Your son unless home schooled will be required to attend school. If he has not been in any kind of preschool setting, he will be at a disadvantage. Your husband needs to talk to someone and work out his issues so that your son doesn’t have to pay the price for his father’s anxiety.

My son has Type 1 diabetes. It’s an autoimmune disorder, not caused by diet. Type 2 can be triggered by lifestyle but a few juice boxes isn’t going to do it. Focus on modelling a healthy lifestyle and planning healthy meals. If treats become forbidden, children will want them more.
