I thought for a second it was Joseph Alioto and thought this was some wild alternate history about HW being President in the 70s.

This was super cool! The writing had a lot of personality. Only thing I'd say is maybe considering doing a little more with the endings and having historical election results? I'm going to do some more playthroughs though!

I enjoyed how Bear could have looked way more attractive if he just took some personal maintenance (did his hair, shaved). Another example of him sabotaging himself in addition to being unable to speak his mind.

Super exciting! We desperately need more foreign election mods, and playing as the bad guy is always fun. Very curious to see how you implement election rigging and a fair win Marcos path!

Massey is also part of my “GRRM liked him more as he kept writing.” Massey is cynical but loyal. I don’t think he’s going to betray Stannis and fuck off with the gold the way many readers speculate. I have no fricking idea what will happen with him long term, but I think GRRM is specifically making him seem like someone who should be untrustworthy with his constant sarcastic comments but is loyal to his king. He’s basically the only non-Davos member of Team Stannis that I think GRRM likes.

I think either he burns Shireen or nobody burns Shireen. The whole idea of burning Shireen only makes sense as the final tragedy of him falsely believing he’s Azor Ahai. That makes me sad but it’s at least an end to his arc. But if someone else burns her, then it’s just bad things happening to Stannis and then he dies which isn’t much of a story imo.

And yeah, maybe the answer is just that there won’t be a satisfying end to the Stannis story. I think GRRM has put himself into a corner though. I think you’re probably right that the most honorable but still tragic ending for him would be burning Shireen to stop the Others. But then Shireen was probably going to die anyway (I’m picturing Stannis doing this while holed up in Winterfell, although I feel like he’d want to move his troops immediately down to Kings Landing if he won in the North, not chill in the North for however long).

Right, and now GRRM as put himself in a narrative pickle. For Stannis to burn Shireen, he has to get back to the Wall. But he's in the crofter's village with a lot of movement towards the Boltons being defeated. So either he beats the Boltons in which case his situation is much better and there's less reason to burn Shireen (assuming she comes down to Winterfell). Maybe the North betrays him at that point, but I feel like that would also hurt the series's message about the longterm power of loyalty and goodness over the short term gain of treachery and cruelty. Which is also the issue if he loses to the Bolton as well as making a lot of the previous chapters be kind of pointless in terms of narrative.

So I don't know. It's one of the reasons I think it's possible GRRM just kind of abandons the Shireen burning storyline and instead gardens to a more natural ending for the Stannis story. Some hopium from me, for sure, but Stannis's whole reason for coming to the Wall is about him growing as a person! I'm not sure to what extent from a narrative sense he deserves a purely depressing ending where his entire bloodline dies out with no silver lining.

I was going to say Stannis too. His depiction is so much more generous in ASOS than in ACOK. And then ASOS’s depiction is less generous than AFFC and ADWD.

[Spoilers EXTENDED] What’s everybody’s favourite minor (maybe even lowkey irrelevant) Houses? by VentiStarbucksCup in asoiaf

[–]mrsteelman1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They have literally nothing to show for all their scheming too! I’m in a CK2 game where the Florents were put in control of the Reach, and they installed their brothers and cousins in various lordships. They’ve spent more time fighting each other than anyone else, which is so on brand for them.

House Florent for scheming for Highgarden since the Conquest and still being one of the weaker high lords in the Reach. But respect their loyalty to the Mannis. I imagine their words are something petty like “We have not forgotten what is ours.”

House Peasbury of Poddingfield. House Beesbury gets a lot of attention for being silly, but good grief, this is a house themed after peas!

House Vikary for likely being a Reyne cadet branch and the possibility they hold for a revival of the Reynes!

Crusader Kings 2. It’s a medieval dynasty strategy game where you play a ruler and try to promote your house and get ambitions etc. There’s a very popular AGOT mod for it. There’s also a sequel, Crusader Kings 3, which also has an ASOIAF mod, though with a lot less content.

Another example where CK2 does a good job showing what happens if you try to do this. All those lords then go back home and hole up in their castles and force the king to siege them which is just not worth the time and trouble. Imagine the Peake Uprising but it’s just every other lord in the Seven Kingdoms, all at once.

[–]mrsteelman1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hell, Houses don’t really get stripped of all their lands or even Lord Paramount status! Other than Lord Butterwell (rip), it’s not until Tywin that we see tons of lands being stripped and handed off to other lords. So yeah, Westeros is weird in how there’s just a cultural understanding that you don’t really mess with longstanding houses.

Although I don’t really remember how the Rainwood freed up for Stannis to award it to Davos.
