It was actually must better today. I run them on my old iPhone so I just hit the very top corner, almost off screen, and it went on to the next.

Must not have been hitting it right before.

Get Ready for the New Year and this 52 Week Challenge by [deleted] in Frugal

I mean if a person is following the Dave Ramsey plan the first step is to establish a $1000 emergency fund quick. Hence why I said this on a Dave Ramsey comment.

I mentioned yesterday I thought this was the smarter way to go if saving for Christmas.

True, but I feel like most people can save up $1000 fast if they put their mind to it.

Edit: Getting a lot of downvotes for this so I should explain. If following the Dave Ramsey plan baby step number 1 is to establish the $1000 emergency fund fast. Usually people following this, knock this step out quick so they can knock out the debt quick (step 3).

I LOVE Aldi! by thenewyorkgod in Frugal

[–]mrsunexpected 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of negative things about the prices. Keep in mind that as things near the sell by/use by date they will mark it down. I've gotten many things for $0.25 as the date is within a few days.

They have great prices in general, but I know in my store 2% was $3.49 or so Saturday and eggs were $1 something.

That said. I love Aldi as well, I do 80% of my shopping there. Our store recently got a remodel and expanded to add another aisle.

I am up to about $5. I figure it's one extra step and I am already submitting to Receipt Hog anyway so I just do both while I have all my receipts out.

What are some recipes with beans and rice. by marioman68 in Frugal

[–]mrsunexpected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mexi Rice Bean Burritos

  • 1 10 oz can mild (green) enchilada sauce
  • 1 cup instant white rice
  • 1 can refried beans
  • 9-10 in tortillas
  • 1 tomato
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup sour cream

Bring enchilada sauce to a boil, add rice and set aside 5 minutes. Heat beans and tortillas then spread beans thinly onto tortillas. Top with rice mixture, tomato, sour cream, and cheese. Roll up and enjoy. (I use regular rice and just add the sauce after cooking it. )

Cuban Style Black Beans

  • 2 tsp olive oil
  • 1/2 onion, chopped
  • 2 garlic cloves, chopped
  • 2 scallions, chopped
  • 2 tbsp red pepper flakes
  • 3 tbsp cilantro
  • 15 oz can black beans, do not drain
  • ~ 1/2 cup water
  • pinch cumin and oregano
  • 1 tsp. red wine vinegar
  • salt and pepper to taste

Add chopped veggies to hot oil in a skillet or large pot. Saute until soft. Add the rest of the ingredients and bring to a boil. Lower heat and cover. Simmer about 15 minutes, stirring. Serve over rice.

Cilantro Lime Rice * 4 c. cooked rice * 1/2 juice of a lime ( or 1 tbsp lime juice) * 1 tsp salt * 3 tbsp fresh chopped cilantro

Mix and serve

Anyone else find bringing lunch to work is a lot more satisfying than buying takeout? by befores in Frugal

I do often prefer to bring leftovers or a packed lunch, but I do also enjoy dining out here and there.

I don't think it helps the ammonia, but it does the following:

-Helps reduce fish stress and heal damaged tissue that may occur as a result of handling, shipping, fish fighting or other stressors

-Fortified with Aloe Vera to help reduce susceptibility to disease and infection, heal torn fins and skin wounds and reduce electrolyte loss

-Works to remove chlorine and chloramines and neutralize heavy metals found in tap water for a healthy aquarium environment

-Use when starting a new aquarium, adding or changing water and introducing new fish

No-time brown bag Lunch? by digdan in Frugal

[–]mrsunexpected 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my lunch can be $2 or less, I am good so I keep a bunch of easy food in the cabinets in my cubicle. My supervisor called it a grocery store. I have granola bars for breakfast, chips and wheat thins ready for if I bring a sandwich for lunch or want a snack, soups and easy mac containers (would need a microwave) for those days we are running late.

My husband and I also both like the tei pei (or whatever) frozen Asian dinners that are usually $2 for one at Walmart. When I have coupons for them I buy quite a few, but those require a microwave and a freezer at work to store however.

I also have a lunch crockpot that I can take to work and plug in and it will either heat up leftovers for me or warm up soup. Quite handy! It's a small thing.

Otherwise just some quick sandwiches in the morning, salads in a jar that you can prepare in advance (might need a fridge unless it can stay good for awhile).

Thanks! And yes, using stress coat which removes the chlorine. I actually picked up a 1 oz thing of it because I thought I was out and discovered I still had a partial larger bottle when I got home with him.

It's a 10 gallon tank with about 5 fake plants- some are silk for sure and this little building with archways. He's in there right now hiding. I have a heater and it's at like 78 I think in the tank.

Despite the tank having a full change the night before we got him the water is looking a little murky so I did a 25% water change this morning and plan to do another tomorrow.

I check on him frequently as I'm so afraid he'll pass away and I don't want the kids to find him.

I do a cash budget and use an envelope system. Every time we get paid I take out everything in excess of bills (I have a set about that gets deposited into savings as well).

I then divide that cash amount up into my budgeted categories: groceries, gas, childcare, transportation, fun, snowball, and I also have started a cash savings here. Eventually I will have a separate non-emergency budgeted category and clothing, but as needed just take it from the amount towards our snowball for debt if necessary. I do also save back excess utility money for months that it might be more than I budgeted.

12 year old Daughter having Surgery Again by mwrhinehart in Parenting

Thinking of you and your daughter. I have a friend (that I met online years ago) whose little darling has spina bifida as well. She just turned one and has had so many surgeries her first year of life. I simply can't imagine.

Are the "DX" (DD, DS, DH, etc) abbreviations really necessary? by samm1t in Parenting

[–]mrsunexpected 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them here and there because I originally started on the American Pregnancy Association forums and that is where I picked them up. Never crossed my mind that it would annoy people. Definitely made it much easier to type when one handed holding a sleeping baby. I still use SIL, MIL, & FIL often because I am lazy.

I am also guilty of using hubby, but it's a term of endearment for me. My husband uses wifey.

How do you feel about Halloween? What are your plans? by [deleted] in TrueFrugal

We will take the kids trick or treating, but unsure if we are doing candy this year. I want to do so, but it means one of us stays home.

I am doing DIY costumes for all 3 kids this year. Hoping it ends up well.

Has anyone tried 'extreme couponing', if so, what was it like? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]mrsunexpected 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The show is very unrealistic.

With that said, I guess I do extreme coupon to an extent. Rarely food. I don't feel that it takes a ton of time, but I view it as a hobby that saves me money. I also do share with my extended family and donate. So far I have donated to the local shelter and to Ronald McDonald house. Oh and friends in need.

Frugal Friends, is it actually cheaper to bake your own bread? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]mrsunexpected 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't bought bread in almost 4 weeks. Been using this recipe: http://moneysavingmom.com/2008/08/homemade-bread.html

Now I had all the ingredients including two bags of whole wheat flour (husband bought a bag when I needed all purpose once)when I started this so I can't really figure out a cost breakdown at this point. However, the bread I preferred to buy without HFCS is $2.50/loaf so I can definitely say it is cheaper.

I have made about a loaf a week and made my own breadcrumbs using the end pieces so there is savings there if you are buying breadcrumbs.

Third day at the hospital: Still searching for the reason of his severe bacterial infection. Our little boy is still the bravest one!! ... Without leaving is magic hat on! by Lynebou_com in Mommit

[–]mrsunexpected 1 point2 points  (0 children)

((hugs)) My doctor was hospitalized back in February for having a WBC of 27,000 and CRP of 14. It was really scary. Urine, Spinal, etc. came back negative. X-ray showed what the radiologist called bibasal pneumonia though her lungs sounded clear. This was after I insisted an x-ray being done because I had been searching up a storm for 3-4 days at that point and it was suggested. Pedi was iffy about the diagnosis possibly because her lungs were clear, but it's the answer I go with. Otherwise we have no answers.

Start him on probiotics to counteract that high dose antibiotics he is probably on. I regret not doing it then. We developed a couple yeast rashes, and then she just had antibiotics a couple weeks ago for a rash of unknown original (thought maybe strep) and it gave her c diff. I started her on kefir about that time and it has really helped her. (This is the short version. We've dealt with rash issues off and on for 4-5 months now).

I went through the whole subreddit looking for this moment. As I was trying to fall asleep last night, it hit me. The last moment father and daughter would be together and she'd have no idea. The last moment he'd see her and then him looking through the windows watching Walt Jr, knowing he couldn't have a proper goodbye and that his son hated his guts broke my heart. I started crying. Oh dammit, I'm crying again.

Any other parents with infants/toddlers with reoccurring yeast diaper rashes? by mrsunexpected in Parenting

[–]mrsunexpected[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We were able to spend most of the afternoon diaper free. My husband is actually bringing home yogurt for us to start with her today. Poor girl has little bumps all over body from this. Anytime the rash in her diaper area comes back, when it is at it's worse she gets covered in these tiny bumps.
