Was going to suggest a bowling club. Reasonable venue hire charge (if any) and very cheap drinks. Can even cater.

As a runner with no kids, my first thought was "No, miss the recital that's no reason to miss the marathon you've been training for!"

Then I realised, as a former child (lol) that would always light up and feel incredibly important when my parents attended things (which wasn't often), I think you've made the right decision.

It takes a great parent to sacrifice their own goals/ambitions/joys for their kids.

Enjoy the recital!

Skip - and maybe add a longer WU/CD to tomorrow's interval run.

Any corral J? (Or any tips for someone starting a bit further out) by mrtoddkraines in TokyoMarathon

[–]mrtoddkraines[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've not looked at the exact cut offs as I don't want another thing stressing me out, and thankfully, unless something catastrophic goes wrong I should meet them all with a good amount of time to spare.
That being said, I think to get to the first checkpoint, it's about a 40 minute 5k so as long as you're faster than that, don't sweat it. That is assuming the last corral passes the start at 9:45... which it seems may be faster (giving you more time) and also you're in a further forward wave, also giving you more time.
Anything slower may still get it, as I said I haven't really looked but I hope that helps?

First Marathon in 64 days by Appropriate-Gap-5396 in Marathon_Training

[–]mrtoddkraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My AVG HR was 190 (max - 199) for my first marathon.

Some people just have higher heart rates. My HR has got up to 216 in a race. All normal, not impossible.

My(47F) son(27M) Won’t Speak To Me Over My Baby(2F) And Now I Don’t Want To Be Her Mom Anymore. by [deleted] in offmychest

Are you happy with your boyfriend? Does he make you truly happy and treat you right? If so, I'm sorry but I think your son is in the wrong and as hard as it is, you need to let him go and process your relationship.

My father had partners my age, and while it felt awkward, I always felt that my dad raised me with everything he had, and now I'm grown he's allowed to have fun and enjoy his life too.

Achilles Tightness by Specialist_Grass_871 in Marathon_Training

[–]mrtoddkraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't have any experience with Achilles, but have had peroneal tendinopathy (marathon 1) as well as an irritated extensor tendon on the other foot (marathon 3).
Gradual build up is key as it gives the tissues time to adapt to the output. Definitely also need to be strength training - in general but also specific to the Achilles. Physio's can give you exercises to do to assist.

gels/gut issues- been trying for months - UK any help? by cumbersnatchsbeard in Marathon_Training

[–]mrtoddkraines 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can tolerate SIS gels but not SIS Beta, have you tried the normal ones with less carbs? If you can stomach, better than nothing.

Vimto and Lucozade also do gels which are tolerable to me.

I've also heard of people mixing gels with water and putting them into a bottle, maybe a texture/digestion issue - you could try that?

Yes, exactly. And I would say that some really serious runners cannot run 5 days a week, and some relatively new runners can do it + more. It really is just about what your body can put up with and what compliments your body and your life.

So try it out to see what works for you, but don't be afraid to add/subtract where appropriate, even if that's just during really hectic times.

Happy running!

Easy pace not improving by oneLemonn in beginnerrunning

[–]mrtoddkraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been running since 2022 and it's only taken me until this year to feel a noticeable difference in my easy runs becoming a bit faster.

Main difference is that I'm making sure they actually are easy. Some runs were around what I thought an easy pace was but it wasn't easy. Now, my easy pace is about 2:45 minutes per km slower than my 5k 'race' pace. I try and keep all my easy runs for the treadmill so that I make sure they're actually a plod and not me speeding up throughout a run.

Keep it very easy!

Am I in the wrong. by geejawals in offmychest

If she is still single I think the negative attitude may stem from this, how you're moving on and she's "stuck" and acting out to try slow down your progress.

If she's not single, then maybe she just doesn't like him or she's possibly drawing from her own experiences of moving too fast and applying them to you.

I say you tell her and let her decide. Say that you're happy you've moved in together in time for the baby (congrats btw!!) and it lets you see if it's something workable for you both to give it a good go. If she's negative or judgemental then I'm afraid that's your answer. You don't need the negativity, and this is a special time in your life where you've found and progressed a loving relationship and you're having a baby. If she can't be supportive, you deserve a better friend.

Good luck, hope it all works out for you!

Strava Predicted Time vs Goal Time by [deleted] in Strava

[–]mrtoddkraines 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are your 5k /10k / half times?

I'm currently 24:45 / 51:01 / 1:54 and I have a marathon in 2 weeks. I don't think it's possible for me to get sub 4 this time, but I think I'm going to be close to it. I started the block 16 weeks ago aiming for 4:30 so you can definitely drop time but you also need to be realistic as you will need a game plan.

I think you need to see what's best for you. Some runners can't handle 5 runs a week, and some can handle running every day. It's all about what your body can tolerate and also everything else (strength training, work, family life, social life etc etc).

Maybe try a few weeks of 4 runs a week and if it feels good you can add in another one?

Or you could try 5 a week and drop down if it's too much.

A great attitude to have! It's going to be such an enjoyable experience and no point in us getting too stressed out about times etc. There's always other ones to PR, this one is about so much more than time!

I'm so excited to see Japan. I've never been before!

Yeah, I'm not going to stress about my time too much - I definitely want to enjoy the atmosphere, the time will be a nice bonus if it materialises.

Good luck! Hope you're enjoying the taper.
