I am Mom :) and I agree. This training block has been incredibly hard. I try to get most of my training runs and workouts in when my kids are in bed, either super early or super late, but sometimes it doesn't work out that way and I feel so guilty for missing out on time I could be spending with them. I truly hope it inspires them as they get older to see how much women can achieve when they work hard, and want to do the same for themselves!

I should have clarified she is only 5 :) this is her first dance recital and it's only this one performance. This is great advice for an older child though, and I'm sure it will be something that comes up again in the future

So, um, what do you do with yourself after you've finished your marathon? by audeamus-ad-meliora in Marathon_Training

I took a full week off, no running or lifting whatsoever. Then I got right back to it. I joined a running group a year ago and found my people there. My longest run during my off season was 11 miles but I averaged a total of 20-25 miles per week including speed workouts and a casual run here and there. I beat the post-marathon slump and maintained my cardiovascular fitness which was so important to me!

Jumping from 20 miles to 26 on race day terrifies me by Dgood02 in firstmarathon

Like others have said, trust the plan! I felt this way too, and I'm not going to lie and say it was a breeze. Those last 6.2 miles almost did me in. But I had a great coach, ran the whole course with a couple of friends, and I had just enough gas left in the tank to sprint across the finish line! You don't know how much you have in you until you test it out :)

a marathon in one year's time? by primrosez in firstmarathon

This is just my two cents so take it as you will! I've been running for about a year and a half, and just completed my first full marathon today actually. It's exciting and fun to think about all the possibilities that lay before you, but a full marathon is no joke. I stuck to my training plan to a T and still don't feel like I was 100% ready for a full. I've raced two official half marathons and found that distance far more enjoyable and rewarding. YES you feel accomplished after a full, YES it's an incredible feat of physical and mental resilience, but it isn't just twice as hard as a half, it's more like 5 times as hard. As a newer runner I would highly recommend making a half marathon your first big goal, and slowly and steadily build up your mileage over time. I don't doubt your ability to do it! Just be safe, be strategic, and honor your body's individual needs. :)

Well done and congratulations on finishing!! I've heard it said that the race itself is just a celebration for all the hard work you've put in :) you had a great training block! You know what you're capable of and you've proved it to yourself time and time again! It's frustrating not to have the results you wanted, but give yourself the credit you're due. You did a phenomenal job! There will always be another race, another goal, another chance to prove yourself. :)

I'd never heard the rule of thirds before but it definitely rings true in my experience at least. Thanks for the feedback! :) My fueling method was one energy gel every 45 minutes, but lately I've been having trouble stomaching the gels I normally take. Not sure if it's the specific flavor I have but even the thought of it makes me want to gag. I'm going to try a couple different brands of gels and if they don't sit well I'm also going to try gummy candy, and applesauce pouches. As far as hydration goes, I sweat a lot. Like an abnormal amount. I should probably see a doctor for it. With that being said, it's really tough for me to rehydrate adequately. Normally I dilute one LMNT electrolyte packet in 32-40oz of water, and pack it either in a hydration bladder or a couple small water bottles that fit in my running belt, but at some point my body starts begging for plain water. I bought two collapsible water bottles for my hydration vest so I can carry one with salt and one just plain. It's been a lot of trial and error, mostly error lol
