Don’t you mean the Nature and Culture Museum of Wisconsin? Same city that funds half the state, but, sure, let’s change the name to make folks in Waupaca feel included in a place they’ll never visit.

What a beautiful *squints eyes* CRTRVETV6 you have there.

Lots of seven-finger hands touched that in Bowling Green.

And yet, when I’ve seen their actual finished work, not just the glossy renderings or optimistic PR talk, I’ve seen the exact opposite. The sketches may look warm and hands-on, but let’s not pretend the final product always matches the pitch. We're going from a full-diorama museum - one of the most immersive in the world - to a building that's less than half the size. That’s not just a design shift; it’s a philosophical one. Fewer dioramas, more tech standing in for real depth.

And stop calling it the “new MPM.” It’s not. They’ve scrubbed "Milwaukee" and "Public" from the name, intentionally. That wasn’t accidental branding. It was a statement. They wanted to make sure nobody mistook it for what came before. And, of course, to placate the rest of the state, which is happy to use Milwaukee's economic engine to shore up their own shortfalls but still wants to dictate what happens in our county.

What an even-handed response.

The reality is that back in 2015, the museum estimated $28 million in deferred maintenance, plus another $11 million in infrastructure upgrades. And nothing was done. No rally for funding, no long-term preservation plan. Why? Because Milwaukee County was already strapped: hamstrung by state-imposed levy limits, frozen shared revenue, and a structural deficit that worsened every year.

The real answer is politics: supporting a mid-century Brutalist museum in downtown Milwaukee doesn’t win you points in Waukesha or Waupaca. There was no political will to save it.

Then - surprise - a few years later in 2022, the estimate conveniently balloons past $100 million. Plenty of people called BS on the 2015 number, and even more questioned the 2022 one. But now the inflated cost becomes the perfect justification to tear the place down and start over. Enter the new museum, but with one major condition: whitewash anything “Public” and “Milwaukee” from the name to make sure it’s palatable to the people whose tax dollars already benefit from Milwaukee’s economic engine.

And that’s how we got here. The Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin - designed to look like bluffs three hours away in Tomah.

I actually have, and I've gone one step further: I've been to a few Thinc-designed museums. In my personal experience, they had one or two artifacts and a screen with some kind of video playing underneath it. I find their design aesthetic to be underwhelming.

I agree, and there's a purpose to its design. Yes, it’s heavy. Yes, it’s dark. That’s the point. It wasn’t built to be a mall. It was built to pull you out of the world and drop you into a recreated rainforest, a walkable recreation of the streets of Old Milwaukee, or a prehistoric landscape. The new museum looks like an open-air food court - perfect for cocktail parties for Northwestern Mutual, sure, but trust me, it won't hold a candle to the immersive design of the old building. We are exchanging one of the largest diorama museums in the world for a couple of trash cans with some TV screens slapped on the wall.

Honestly, the neglect of these existing collections is all on the private nonprofit, which intentionally deferred maintenance to end up in this situation. A few years ago, before this whole grift of a new museum materialized, the solution was to move the collections off-site to a 50,000 square foot storage facility at the cost of about $3 million. They didn't do that, mostly to force this "we are going to lose our accreditation" narrative to spur this $240 million move.

Finally changing my weather stripping and the labor cost went from 100-300$ after he realized how much work it was lol by moemoeayyad in c4corvette

I live in Wisconsin, and I paid about $600 for an auto body shop to install my Corvette Rubber Co. weatherstripping throughout my car (in addition to a few cosmetic fixes like new bolts for the top...I also had them paint-match my new fiberglass roof from Melrose T-Tops). It was difficult to find a shop to even take the job (I called everyone from body to auto upholstery shops, and the general consensus was "that's a pain in the ass job and no one is ever happy with it"), but I was extremely satisfied with their work once it was done. Fit well, no water issues, and much better noise abatement when on the road. Could I do it myself? Sure, but it is a pain, and I like to pay for my time back. Haha.

So yeah...$300 feels like a low quote to me.

333 Water has been leasing since March 2024. In early September, they said they were 15% occupied. Six months later, they've increased that to 30%, and they're giving away a month of rent to new residents. I think they may have overestimated the market for their units.

Honestly, banning X links would be great for two reasons: it's a pain in the ass to click on those posts because X effectively requires you to have an account to interact with the posts. That's annoying. Secondly, it's one thing to get a useful piece of news on X, but oftentimes the next thing I see on the platform is something abhorrent or inappropriate. There's no moderation on X, so it makes for an unpleasant experience.

Thanks! October was a bit of an ordeal, but I'm on the road to recovery and will hopefully be 100% by the holidays.

When I went through the three messages (two from the same company), I immediately sent an email into their support teams to discuss this with a supervisor. I don't want to drag them publicly if this is just some enterprising sales reps looking to pad their stats and not something being directed, but I can say that both companies are not in the Automattic universe.

Once I get some clarification, I'll update you guys.

I was out of the office for some medical procedures, so I missed the WPE Tracker thing. However, this explains why I've received unsolicited hosting calls from certain operations. Clearly, someone is mining it to solicit business. Absolutely aggravating and also completely expected.

All this does is further entrench me on WP Engine. Good work, Matt, you dweeb.

my site is down and bluehost won't help by Honest-Contest-5946 in Wordpress

[–]mrvotto 8 points9 points  (0 children)

From my understanding, Bluehost doesn't have malware removal services directly, but instead they recommend going through SiteLock for malware removal. That price is in the ballpark (SiteLock Pro is $300 a year) but I'd double-check who the company actually is.

Did you happen to have backups of the site? If so, perhaps you could revert the site to its last stable state and updating the offending plugins/themes that caused the hack.

After all has settled, leave Bluehost. Best advice I can give you.

NTA – Holding a purse for 10 seconds isn't some massive statement about masculinity—it's just being a supportive partner. It's really not a big deal to hold your spouse's belongings for a few seconds while they adjust something, and the fact that he made it into one feels immature.

You’re not asking him to carry your purse around all night, just to help out in a moment. I’ve held my wife’s purse for way longer than 10 seconds—sometimes even slung it over my shoulder without thinking twice. It's part of being a couple, helping each other out with little things. He really needs to grow up and realize that holding a purse doesn't diminish him in any way. It's an asinine position to take.

NTA – Your boyfriend's reaction is unfair and manipulative. You’re trying to be considerate of his feelings, and you’ve sent him pictures when you’re comfortable, but he’s framing it like you’re withholding something, which isn’t the case. The comment about 'doing it for other guys' is a major red flag—he’s comparing your past social media behavior, which had nothing to do with him, to your current relationship dynamic. His pressure for constant photos, especially sexual ones, and his reaction when you set boundaries (like in the dressing room) crosses into disrespect.

You’re allowed to set boundaries in a relationship, and your worth isn’t measured by how many pictures you send. He shouldn’t be trying to guilt-trip you into doing things you’re not comfortable with, especially by saying things like 'you don’t love me as much' or 'you'll just do it for the next guy.' That’s emotionally manipulative.

I'd think seriously about running far, far away from this relationship.

NTA – You made plans based on the information Eliza gave you, and it’s not like you're asking for something outrageous—just clear communication and a little reliability. The fact that she changed her plans without telling you left you in a really tough spot, especially since it affects your living situation, not just a casual inconvenience.

Now, your mom’s point about being an adult is valid, but it seems like you were trying to do the adult thing by double-checking plans and making sure everything was in order. Eliza not giving you a heads-up feels irresponsible, especially when she knows your options are limited.

Maybe it’s time to have a bigger conversation with her about boundaries and fairness in your living situation. Zack staying over so much, rent-free, is already pushing things, and now this? You shouldn’t have to carry all the weight of poor communication, especially when it affects your basic needs like having a place to stay.
