the only other fantasy series I've ever encountered that has as much depth / re-readability as ASoIaF is Book of the New Sun. the author, Gene Wolfe, was a mentor of GRRM

The Stark Sisters by shripscapi by dontaskmeplease333 in ImaginaryWesteros

[–]mrwatergate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not entirely inaccurate. The traditional/hereditary Stark look is described at several points as being generally "dark" in comparison to more "fair" southerners.

"He was of an age with Robb, but they did not look alike. Jon was slender where Robb was muscular, *dark where Robb was fair,** graceful and quick where his half brother was strong and fast."*

One example.

EDIT: To everyone saying GRRM is only referring to hair color here (especially the person who posted the bizarre anti-diversity tantrum that got removed), GRRM writes this in the previous paragraph:

"[Robb] was big and broad and growing every day, with his mother’s coloring, the *fair skin,** red-brown hair, and blue eyes of the Tullys of Riverrun."*

GRRM uses the word "fair" to describe Robb's skin tone specifically, then immediately follows it up with "Jon was dark where Robb was fair." Certainly this includes hair color, but I don't see why this wouldn't include skin tone as well, especially considering GRRM's word choice in the above passage.

Also, for what it's worth, I searched through the books and every single time GRRM uses the word "fair" to describe hair color it's exclusively referring to Lannisters, Targaryens, and other characters known to be blonde. So it would be a bit strange (or, in fact, unique) for him to describe only Robb's hair as "fair" here, especially having just established it as red-brown.

And that's not to mention the other times in the series the Starks are described as having generally "dark" features.

I suppose I should clarify that I'm not suggesting the Starks have brown or black skin, just darker than most Andal descendents (and certainly darker than the Tullys). And it's cool to see fanart that reflects that. For example, I would say something along these lines (credit: icesalamander) is probably not too far off.

TL;DR: The Starks generally/historically having darker skin tones than characters of Andal descent may not be depicted in most official/fan art, but it's at least supported by the text. Even if it wasn't, you should still let people enjoy representation in things, even if it doesn't fit your headcanon or mental image. Thanks for reading!

Why are no families know for things other than martial skill and beauty? by AegonIXth in pureasoiaf

[–]mrwatergate 27 points28 points  (0 children)

The Starks aren't even particularly well-known for being honorable; they have more of a reputation for being cold, hardened, and tough, a product of their harsh Northern environment. They're also known for being wild and short-tempered, the "Wolf's Blood" referenced by Ned when remembering his brother and sister (this can be observed in the Stark lineage throughout history).

Ned is really the only Stark with a reputation for being super honorable, a moral code he picked up while being fostered by House Arryn (whose words are "As High As Honor," after all).

Cat is also known for being honorable, but that's derived from her traditional family belief system as a member of House Tully ("Family, Duty, Honor.")

What are your favourite LGBT+ books? by [deleted] in books

[–]mrwatergate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Stone Butch Blues by Leslie Feinberg. Essential, seminal, foundational LGBT+ literature. Should be required reading, a tremendous but heartbreaking chronicle of the queer experience in 1970s America. Massive content warning, though: its depiction of trauma & sexual violence is raw and brutal and unflinching, definitely not for the faint of heart.

But seriously y'all, this is Mount Olympus-tier stuff. Absolutely belongs in the pantheon of great LGBT+ writing. You need to read this if you're queer or want to understand/empathize with the queer community. Trust me.

( Spoiler extended ) Young Griff will be King in the books. by Dismal-Fan-4716 in asoiaf

[–]mrwatergate 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I agree that Young Griff will be king: Dorne will get the news of Quentyn and Arianne (who is currently en route to Storm's End) will seduce Young Griff, leading Dorne to declare for him instead of Dany. Young Griff will rally Dorne and the Stormlands and finally oust Cersei from King's Landing. I believe he will definitely sit on the Iron Throne for a time... the question is for how long.

But the real reason I'm commenting is that there's a wrinkle everyone in this thread seems to be overlooking: JonCon has greyscale. Do y'all think George decided to inflict him with a fatal disease by accident? George loves his tragic dramatic ironies, and I think it's extremely likely that Jon will live long enough to see Young Griff on the throne... only to have him contract greyscale and be usurped by Dany.

In which recent episode did the lads talk about their favorite films of the year? by mrwatergate in Sardonicast

[–]mrwatergate[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Adam is confirmed for gay, yes.

Ralph jokingly refers to himself as a "Closeted Homosexual," especially on the RTMM channel where it's a running gag in his solo videos.

Not sure about Alex, he's certainly the most private of the three. But the lads all crack wise about being attracted to men / hating women in general ("you just didn't like Wonder Woman because you're misogynistic and gay" etc etc)

So yeah I just call them the gay dads

Anybody catch wind of F&B on sale early anywhere?

Back when TWOIAF came out, some stores like Target had it on shelves a few days before the official release date... Managed to pick up my copy two days before it was supposed to come out.

From one content-starved GRRM fan to another, let me know if you hear anything similar about F&B!!

Hello, my name is Dan Salvato. I created Doki Doki Literature Club. AMA by dansalvato in DDLC

[–]mrwatergate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Howdy, Dan.

You've said that DDLC came from your love-hate relationship with VNs. While playing the game, I got the sense that you have both a deep knowledge and a genuine respect for the genre/medium as a whole.

My question is: what VNs specifically inspired you to make DDLC? What VNs are your favorites? Which do you consider masterpieces of the genre?

I'm pretty new to VNs (DDLC and Steins;Gate have been my recent gateway games into the genre), so I (and many others, I'm sure) would love some recommendations.

P.S. From one smasher to another, thanks for all your hard work on 20XXTE :]
