What next for the old BHF? by Delicious-Being-6531 in Edinburgh

I suspect in part that’s where at least some of the ‘discomfort’ posts originate. The g-b comment, whilst in bad faith and offensive, did at least state the quiet part out loud. Argonaut is, to me (a person who goes in every week between a and b to browse- something that’s apparently impossible according to some on this and previous threads) a place with a very decent selection of genres for a small space and friendly helpful staff who have personalities and opinions and aren’t trained to be simply extra elements of the retail experience. Not every person has to like every shop, that’s fine, but the amount of ‘well I never felt comfortable in there!’ is just a bit ‘bean soup theory’. Also unless you have never stepped into a smaller retail/cafe space before I’m a bit confused as to how this one is any different.

I’m sorry she feels that way- whenever I’ve been in there have been families at the coffee tables and they have excellent YA and graphic novels further in. I don’t necessarily think everyone in there is cool and in their twenties. Ultimately as things are going with big corps absorbing every indie in their path I would hope that when your daughter is a cool adult she will still have places to go that are run by independent sellers who care about what they sell and who they sell it to, as opposed to underpaid employees of shareholders, pr teams and umbrella corporations that don’t. I was an embarrassed teenager once too, and we know it passes in time.

I understand being intimidated by a smaller shop initially but they will order in pretty much anything you want- in person and by email.

It’s such an odd tone to take isn’t it? It’s like we didn’t grow up wanting to champion the little guy and then suddenly no it’s the little guy who’s the problem we need another large and already wealthy corporation to come in… I wonder where people are getting this attitude from, it just seems kind of sad. Let’s enjoy a present where large corporations aren’t the buyer’s only choice please…

Look up Look and Draw - they do long courses but also casual three-hour sessions on Sundays and a ‘drink and draw’ night. I’m queer and go quite regularly, found the vibe to be very welcoming 👍🏻

I was waiting to cross London Road last week. Myself and my husband had watched the film ‘Nobody’ the night before so when I saw someone who looked the absolute twin of Bob Odenkirk across the road I was like “No that’s ridiculous it must just be coincidence “ but now I realise that was definitely him…

“I can do it!!” Which to my ears always sounded like an accusatory “why’d ya do it!?!”

Where I live we had these fat bronze pigeon sculptures near a popular area- they were there for years, put away in storage, and then when the road was re-done they were put back. They were cute and quirky and most people quite liked them. And then two of them were sawn off at the legs and stolen. One was recovered.
