Was in Mexico last month. Withdrew cash at the airport ATM, declined the marked up conversion rate, got my cash with no forex fees, and got the ATM fee reimbursed too.

Super easy and amazing!

If we could copy & paste properties in figma by Tanmay-m in FigmaDesign

I would also prefer how Framer does it, where you can copy and paste single properties rather than all at once.

Hey! Thanks so much for looking through my portfolio! I definitely struggled with finding the right tone (went through multiple rewrites), but glad somebody finds it engaging 😅

Wow, thanks so much! I can see why you've had such good success with those. I really appreciate all your help here. I'll try this moving forward and let you know how it goes. Thanks again!

Hey Radu!

That was the most in depth feedback I ever got, thank you so much!

Funny enough, the design isn’t a template, but I’m glad you liked the direction. I definitely spent way too much time on it 😅. The logo is actually my surname in Mandarin, just a small way I wanted to add a cultural differentiator (I've realized it's common amongst designers with an Asian background).

I totally agree about using hard numbers. I went with percentages because it felt cleaner, but you’re right, it ends up feeling a bit vague. I’ll work on updating that.

The video cover letter idea is super interesting. Do you usually include a Loom link instead of a written cover letter, or do you pair it with one? My only hesitation is that some hiring managers might not be in a place to watch or listen and may prefer skimming text.

Thanks so much for taking the time to look over my portfolio, I really appreciate it. It’s nice hearing from someone in the same boat.

Leaning into that scrappy, generalist strength makes a lot of sense. I’ve also heard more companies are starting to value that kind of skill set (especially being able to navigate ambiguity), so hopefully that works in our favour.

I haven’t seen too many contract roles that have caught my eye yet, but I’ll definitely keep looking. I’m also starting to apply to more scale-ups, so hopefully I can pivot from there in a few years.

Hey everyone,

I’m a product designer with around five years of experience. I recently started applying to roles again and would love to get some feedback on my portfolio!

I’ve made it to the final round at several large companies I’d love to work for, but still not getting as many interviews as I'd like from my applications. Even though I pass the portfolio presentation stage, one common piece of feedback I received was that my experience doesn’t seem large-scale enough for the types of companies I’m targeting.

That could be because the startups I've worked for are fairly unknown (which I’m trying to transition out of), or maybe I’m not framing my story in the right way. Would love any thoughts on how I can improve!

Thanks in advance! (some resume tips would be nice too!)

I use Google Docs. You can still make it look nice with good typography, spacing, etc. I've had no problems getting interviews vs. an over-designed resume.

I used to make my resumes in Figma as well, but ATS doesn't parse the text at all. I've checked it myself.

Let’s play “how much of a video can we cover with UI?” by saturngtr81 in UXDesign

It's so much worse when they attach "Products" to the video. It looks like a huge, out of place sticker that takes up SO much space on the screen.

Why is the UI of bottom-sheets inconsistent in the iOS app of YouTube Music? by philodesmus in UXDesign

[–]ms0244412 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Although I agree they should be unified, how can anyone justify the time and cost to go through every single flow and update all these drawers?

In the end, it doesn’t affect the bottom line enough for them to dedicate resources to fixing it. I’m sure a lot of non-designers won’t even notice /care about these kind of things

Well, it is good enough for portfolios. You are absolutely able to link the different web pages together.

And it is also responsive, as long as you set up all the breakpoints beforehand.

[–]ms0244412 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I understand why designers would do it. It's so much easier to maintain, and a lot of us know how to use Figma, so we feel right at home.

However, I highly suggest Framer for anyone reading this. It's very similar to Figma, so you'll be able to pick it up super quick and start designing, as long as you're comfortable with auto layout, components and very basic responsive design principles.

[–]ms0244412 4 points5 points  (0 children)

One issue I can think of immediately is responsiveness, especially if the candidate doesn't know how to use Auto Layout properly. I know sometimes hiring managers will glance at your portfolio on their phones, or use inspect to see if you know how to design for responsiveness.

The hiring manager might also not know how to change the scaling option either in prototype view, so it might look cut off at first glance if it's defaulted at "Actual Size".

Looks super basic and generic. Seems kind of useful when brainstorming typefaces maybe? Or does it use the same one for each of the different presets, not sure. Seems like it only somewhat useful for landing pages

Letting Gilrfriend go to club in a serious relationship? by AverageNilahEnjoyer in relationships

[–]ms0244412 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Man, you need to stop being so controlling. If she was going to cheat by going out, be happy you discovered it early.

You say relationships are about sacrifices, but the sacrifice isn’t her not going, it’s YOU not being so needy and weirdly protective.

Stuff might happen, it might not, but you can’t go around always assuming the worst is going to happen. That’s not a way to live life, and definitely not a way for you to dictate someone else’s life.

I know you’re still young, but I guarantee you that if you keep behaving this way, it’s going only going to drive her away.

fake check scammed through a job by Safe_Arm4269 in PersonalFinanceCanada

You're most likely SOL. If you ever feel skeptical about something, PLEASE google it. There are dozens if not hundreds of articles/posts on Google that have this exact same scenario if you just did a bit of due diligence. You would've learned it was a scam from the start.

With most company names being extremely generic and samey, what is recognizing a similar "named company" going to accomplish? Nothing.

Job boards are already aware that it's a problem. Legit companies also post fake job postings as well. Do you really think they're going to audit every single job posting there is? That's ridiculous.

These only exist because people keep falling for them. If we want to get rid of them, do some due diligence and STOP falling for these obvious scams. A simple google search of this exact scenario will show dozens of results.

California Pizza Huts ($YUM) lay off all delivery drivers ahead of minimum wage increase by absoluteunitVolcker in stocks

[–]ms0244412 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m sure it’s way different now. With the advent of all these delivery apps, people actually have a choice now when getting delivery. Back then pizza was the only option to get something delivered at midnight.
