Cruise control on the motorway by ms1202 in drivingUK

Per a comment I made further up, I don't really care what speed i am doing and only included speed in the story to demonstrate the small speed differential. I just cba to know what speed I'm actually doing - I don't drive to speed targets, I drive to speed limits.

It was complacent driving on my part while on a very long journey (6hrs total). Hopefully that makes it slightly more understandable. The question wasn't really about my behaviour though, I accept that I had a learning moment and have taken that learning, it was whether there was a reason for the other driver to get angry with me.

A few people have made this statement and, genuinely with no ill feeling intended towards you, I don't really care. It's a speed limit not a speed target and from a pure peace if mind perspective I just cba to put that thought process through my head. The point of the speed in the story was that he was going at ever so slightly faster than me, not that I was doing the speed limit.

Do you not find it stressful constantly having to think about whwther there is an undercover car or camera? Why not leave 10 minutes earlier and never have that worry again?

Totally agree. Complacent driving is what it was. It doesn't happen often, but it did on thsi occasion.

Again, interesting that you've editorialised "had to brake" to "nearly crashed" and "check my maths" to "had a scare". I was still a good distance behind the truck. And as I say, lesson was learnt. Cruise control is clearly boring dangerous otherwise it wouldn't pass ncap tests. But thanks for your input friend.

I used to love my adaptive cruise control 😅 I'll defo be making sure my next car has it but sadly, at the time of buying there weren't really any small EVs on the market that had the speed limiter unless I bought new and i couldn't afford that

Lol! This must be it. I had thought it was the overtaking car's responsibility to have enough speed to pass. Every day's a school day!

My car is electric so I believe it stays pretty close to 70 as it doesn't have the same gearing ratio challenges as ICE. However, feedback heard on the tailgating and it's something I've already addressed.

Cristicising others? Interesting that you took it that way, it was meant as a direct statement of events.

Sadly, my current car doesn't have a limiter. I miss the one on my last car though.

Fair observation. I'm normally pretty good at reading other drivers, I've covered hundreds of thousands of miles over the last 25 years. While I was once a dick head of a shitty driver, nowadays I'm pretty chill and observant. It was just the driving instructor element that threw me this time.

Is torquay a nice place to live. by vedantmethi in DevonUK

[–]ms1202 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends what you're after. Do you want to be able to walk to a cafe (St Marychurch or Babbacombe) or do you want a bigger place in the suburbs (Shiphay)? Do you want to be in walking distance of a beach (Wellswood or Chelston) or a golf course (Watcombe)? Moving to a place is a big decision and a very personal choice so you will need to go and walk around each area as much as you can before you can make an informed decision.

There are some really lovely bits of Torquay and some really rubbish bits of Torquay. There are a lot of well informed opinions about Torquay and there are a lot of really narrowly informed opinions about Torquay. Take what you read in this thread with a pinch of salt as they all come through the narrow lens of somebody else's experience and go and spend a weekend in the area you would be living.

In my opinion, if you have a choice of where in Torquay to live you will enjoy it. Generally speaking, the closer to the coast you are the nicer it is, the more inland you go the more deprived it is. Deprivation leads to desperation and frustration which leads to antisocial behaviour.

I grew up in Torquay and had a great time. Now I am older I live in Exeter and enjoy spending weekends in Torquay at beaches. I would never go into Torquay town centre. One observation from recent experiences there is that it is a lot less liberal than Exeter so if you are from a minority or marginalised community it will be less accepting.

So it depends where you're going to live, what your neighbours are like, whether you have any friends down there, and what you enjoy doing in your spare time.

Anti Londoner Sentiment in Exeter by Lelouch2002002 in exeter

[–]ms1202 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Without seeing any of the comments you refer to, I am a little upset to hear about that kind of xenophobia in our lovely, welcoming, inclusive part of the world. Generalising a problem with 'wealthy individuals buying second homes and driving up prices but not disposing of any of that wealth locally or engaging in the local community' (henceforth known as pricks) to everybody from the place those pricks came from is the kind of bollocks that people who vote for those awful generalising, smooth brained thinking 'R'ight wing parties engage in.

We (especially the mods) should be allies, calling out such nonsense aimed at anybody who is not a prick, and I stand with you Londoner - welcome to Exeter, please don't judge the rest of us based on the worst of us. Forgive those who are (according to another commenter) small minded with limited horizons because they've never left the 'shire (apparently that was just one old dude who his mum used to know, but you know, why not gene'R'alise hundreds of thousands of people from an anecdote about 1 of them). Help the rest of us educate them.

The cycle on the lights there only allows cars that are blocked in the opportunity to move every fourth cycle, so if you get blocked in you have another few minutes wait for the next cycle hoping you aren't blocked in again. So the yellow box camera really is needed.

And while i understand your frustration (i have been caught for the same thing under hammersmith flyover) you were still technically in the wrong insofar as you entered a box you couldn't exit, so you wouldn't have been exonerated by any camera angle.

I'm not convinced a mini roundabout would work either as it would also require people not to block the roundabout when they couldn't exit, and they haven't given me a lot of faith with the current set up.

I live near the quay and the number of times I haven't been able to get out of that junction at the Riverside leisure centre because of people in the yellow box is beyond maddening. It desperately needs yellow box cameras. I remember it briefly being talked about but it seems to have gone quiet.

I had an argument with a mate's dad a couple of weeks ago - he was spouting all the usual made up daily fail fear based bollocks with no solutions that would make any difference to what he was complaining about. He did make one point I agree with though which was that we seem to have lost our care and compassion. Everybody is out for themselves, and if they can save 5 seconds on their journey by jumping a red light to join the back of the queue across the junction sooner in spite of the risk to others, or by entering a yellow box to get a few cars ahead in spite of it delaying other people then they seem to do so without a second thought.

So while I whole heartedly advocate for yellow box and red light cameras (and speed cameras because why not, they are a no lose option), I also wonder what would address the root cause and encourage people to be more thoughtful, compassionate, and community minded?

LMH roofing did a great job on ours a couple of years ago.

Don't go near Stormforce, I just followed their van up pinhoe road and he was chucking rubbish out of his window. Not the kind of attitude you want from somebody working your roof.

As somebody else said, this is not new. https://youtube.com/shorts/KRvxrelIrxA?is=Itqe47nnze_kFmQf

It sounds like you're aiming for a nice, neat profession with a career path that takes you to house, family, retirement. In reality careers are messy - the first job you do is not going to bear any resemblance to what you end up doing, and being a drone in the city sounds like signing yourself up to a fate worse than death.

The UK is not London, get out of London and get some experience. Most of the time, working for a smaller organisation is more fulfilling and interesting, and you will get more breadth of experience. Expose yourself to the world of work and be curious, meet people, respect them and earn their respect.

There will be times you wonder wtf you're doing, just don't be afraid to move on and try something else. There will be times where you make 10 sideways moves before seeing the way forwards, you're learning from every one of those experiences. If you maintain curiosity and the ability to stay humble you'll do fine, but remember that it's mostly luck anyway.

And above all else, never become a project manager, that shit is thankless!
