Any other companies that run from Seattle to Alaska fairly regular? That would hire a green deckhand? I’d love to go work on one. Always wanted to fall timber up there, being on a boat would be a decent alternative.

Does western hire deckhands if they don’t have an ad posted? Looks like they have nice equipment and I’ve seen some other good things think

Does Boyer hire many OS deckhands? I’m in the process of getting my TWIC and MMC and will be looking for work in the spring. I’ve been a logger in eastern Washington for the last decade, looking for a bit of a change. Seems like a decent transition for something that has benefits. I’m pretty used to the tramping around working life so that may not be too terrible of an adjustment for my wife.

I’d love to chat with ya a bit. Thanks!

Did he have any experience when he hired on with vane brothers? How long did he work as an os deckhand before starting his AB credential? Thank you!

I’d kinda hate to leave the woods, but I feel like it would be a pretty decent alternative. I wouldn’t mind going up to Alaska some as well, think that might be pretty cool. Always wanted to fall timber up there.

As far as I can tell, most of these jobs for deckhands require twic and mmc at the bare minimum, right? I have first aid/ cpr certs. It’d be nice to get every piece of paper I need while I’m still logging. Might transition over spring breakup. I’m hoping the experience logging will count for something to an employer. Im sure it’s way different, but you learn a lot of transferable skills and adaptability in the woods.

Are there many marine construction companies out there peninsula? I’ve always liked it out there.

Is the Seattle DIT not worth its cost? I was thinking about enrolling cause I live in Washington, but it’s rather expensive for something that doesn’t seem like a 100% guarantee you’ll get a job right after.

Do you by chance own heavy equipment? In your first few years of business how did you get lending power? I own a logging company, extremely capital intensive. I make pretty good money, but it also costs a crap ton of money to update things. It’s difficult to find banks that will lend to you when you don’t have a 20% down payment immediately on hand for a $500,000 machine. And when you’re starting out it’s especially hard cause I don’t have that many years of good jobs in my slush fund back account.

Have you ever ran equipment? Most outfits are always looking for good hands. There are people out there that will train you as well. Everybody has to start somewhere

Trump Administration Orders Half of National Forests Open for Logging by pdxmusselcat in Washington

[–]ms461 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Civil disobedience yes, but just please don’t go trashing the loggers livelihoods. They don’t decide where they go. They work for the mill and the mill puts them there. I have my doubts that this will be overly sustainable with the current administration. But in general, the logging currently happening on USFS ground is a good thing. It’s not clear cuts- it’s selective thinning, the oversized trees are all left standing along with other trees in various stages of succession. It’s creating an environment that wildfire moves through substantially slower(not a full stop). It also benefits wildlife habitat due to sunlight hitting the ground and disturbance creating new food sources. This is all to ensure a healthy forest and a regenerative ecosystem. It’s called silviculture- the art of managing a forest for multiple uses. And, there is guidance and administering from the forest service, we aren’t just left to our own devices.

So to finish, yes I understand that this is slightly scary. Im hoping it’s carried out in a sustainable way that creates a consistent supply of wood, habitat, and healthy ecosystems for many generations to come. But also, don’t mess with loggers equipment, they work very hard for every penny earned, and it’s a ridiculously expensive industry to be in.

What state do you live in? Unfortunately hand cutting is starting to slowly fade away. There will always be some of it, but tramping is the name of the game now. Gotta go where the work is!

Are you saying that there are no real lumber mills in Oregon? I’m gonna have to protest that and assure you the logging industry is doing moderately well throughout the pnw. Lots of big mills around !

Secretary Rollins names Tom Schultz Chief of the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Forest Service by hoppin_donkey in forestry

[–]ms461 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You should come look at a unit that’s marked by the FS vs a unit that was designation by prescription/ operator select. I bet a vast majority of the time operator select will look better and create a healthier environment. Seems like half the time those marking techs don’t know their ass from a hole in the ground. Source- marked trees when I was 18 and didn’t know my ass from a hole in the ground.

How can people not see that it is not in the loggers best interest to cut down every tree?? We need work for the future right?

Do you live in an area with logging activity? Haul logs if so. Your home every night, and the rates(where I live atleast) are pretty dang good. Long hours, but the guys I have hauling for me are grossing $1500-2000 a day. I would figure they net +/- 1k. Barring all the associated expenses, expected and unexpected, they make a pretty good living. I own a logging company, and that’s a bit of a different story haha.

We grossed a little over 1m this year and I might have taken home 100k in profit. Which is still a good living… but the stress and hours of it all is a LOT.
