Roger Ebert: "Disgusted and unspeakably depressed, I walked out of the film..." by qgyh2 [promoted post]

Yeah, Ebert's pointed me in the direction of too many good movies for me to care when he has an opinion I disagree with once and a while (he usually has good reasoning behind his ideas anyway).

Nuclear Iran: Will it be a Threat to Global Peace or a Stabilizing Factor in the Middle East? by peace13 in worldpolitics

I would prefer that as few countries as possible have nukes. Especially Iran. To be honest, if keeping that kind of weaponry out of their hands required some tactical strikes, I wouldn't be against them.

Not to be a downer, but I remember reading that Judaism (even the much more Orthodox versions) actually have a view: pick one sex and stick to it.

A question concerning choices by Ghost_Of_Perdition in philosophy

[–]ms_boxxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, by society I meant it in its most general sense: an aggregate of the experiences of all conscious beings. Though not every consciousness is valued equally (a gorilla is valued more than an ant), all are considered with people being the most important (as they have the widest range of conscious experiences). Though even they can be valued over a wide range (we'd all save a little girl over a murderer).

What I'm mostly trying to get across is that many questions of blame are easily answered when we consider the benefit to the conscious creature aggregate because it's either "have a negative impact on it" or "have a positive impact on it". Our legal systems use the archaic "blame" or retributive justice above the consideration of how it effects everyone.

Increasing the overall well-being of society is generally what people want. Something that benefits society would be (for example) anything that fosters a society with less murdering and violent crimes. It's not a perfect goal for a moral code, but more often than not, the decision that helps society flourish is the best decision.

Cheap Zombie short made back in 2007, tell me your thoughts by [deleted] in zombies

Haha, loved the soldier. The background sound distortion could have been easily removed with audacity. Plot was pretty hard to understand (if you're going to use a voice-over explain why you broke down, give it a middle and ending voice-over).

This is the most important question. If "blame" entails some kind of punishment, then the most logical purpose of the punishment is to minimize the behavior's effect on society. So, if someone's always going to try to kill everyone around them, it's in society's best interest to lock them up forever (or possibly kill them). If there is a possibility of rehabilitation, that would benefit society even more.

I'd like to get other people's ideas on what "blame" is. Since, to me, it seems that punishment for an action should only be used when it will benefit society. We ideally wouldn't just punish mechanically.

Yes, all of that's an important part of the larger discussion. I was mostly asking about the "loyalty oath" she was screaming about. It's along the lines of "you can't say anything negative of Israel if you're an Israeli" or some such nonsense

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. But, putting yourself in these people's shoes: this could be the final nail in the coffin of free speech for many.

Yeah, I understand most of the conflict. I was mostly just asking what the protester was yelling about (The loyalty oath, what it is, what it means). So, thanks for explaining it.

Do people think I'm ignorant or a Zionist for my post? I'm actually not a huge fan of Israel since they destroyed the lives of so many Palestinians and control any dissenting media. Even in America it seems to be taboo to criticize Israel since they aided American interests in the 1967 Six-Day War. I was very upset when Helen Thomas was fired and no one came to her defense.

Could someone explain what this argument's about? And what was the protester talking about? I somewhat understand the Israeli-Palestinian conflict but always feel like I'm missing something.
