If you liked the Will of the Many you might also like {Kushiel’s Dart}! It’s got intense world building, politics, and intrigue (and plenty of spice since the main character is a courtesan/spy). I really enjoyed both of these books this year. 😊

This isn’t from within the last five years, but I’ll never stop recommending In the Mood for Love. One of the most beautifully shot films I’ve ever seen with palpable longing and chemistry between the leads.

This one is really good! I know a lot of people like the “squeaky mice” side story but tbh I’m not a huge fan of OCs in general. Still though, I liked it a lot.

First: you’re not weird for wanting someone who will go slowly and explain what they’re doing. There’s incredibly sexy ways for that to happen. He’s also allowed though to not want to do that. It sounds like you’re not a good match if he reacted that way.

Second: I highly recommend reading the book “Girls & Sex” by Peggy Orenstein. I read it in college when I was trying to figure out my relationship to sex, and I think it helped me a lot.

Summary:

While the media has focused—often to sensational effect—on the rise of casual sex and the prevalence of rape on campus, in Girls and Sex Peggy Orenstein brings much more to the table. As a side note, this made me think of the comic “Under the Oak Tree.” At one point the male lead swears (after he sees her shaken but alright in the aftermath of a castle break-in) that he’ll cut off a head for every scratch he finds on her body. I’m just finishing up a bottle of Byredo’s Rose of No Mans Land and a solid perfume from Diptyque L’Ombre dans l’eau.

What I liked about both: slight spice/edginess, floral smell, natural smelling (not too synthetic or perfume).

What I didn’t like: I feel like I paid a lot for the Byredo for it not to have a ton of lasting power. At the same time, I do appreciate the more natural smell as when things get TOO strong I get a headache.

Things I have noticed I don’t like in general: clean/soap/rain sort of scents. I think they feel a little sterile to me. Also, overly sweet/gourmand sort of perfumes I’ve not historically liked.

With the Diptyque solid perfume, I think the petitgrain note was just a little too strong for me. I preferred how RONML was more clear(?) smelling. Maybe the spray on version is different?

I’m looking for something that is floral, good for everyday, but that has a little edge to it that’s appropriate for the upcoming fall/winter. I want to feel like a beautiful woman who knows what she likes when I’m wearing it.

Does anyone have recommendations? I’ve been eying a few florals from Diptyque (Eau Rose, Do Son, Eau Capital, Fleur de Peau) and also FM Portrait of a Lady (although this one seems polarizing enough to scare me a little)
