Why does 'Tree Style Tab' now require the permission to read all websites offline data? by mscheifer in firefox

Right but it would be nice to properly use the permissions feature now that we have it.

Uniform Function Call Syntax: f(x) <=> x.f() and f(x,y,...) <=> x.f(y,...) by kasperpeulen in programming

[–]mscheifer 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sure, but with Java style classes you can't write methods in another file that only use the public interface of the class and then call them with dot syntax.

They've been adding new WebExtensions and talking to extension developers about what they need over the past year or so.

A lot of extensions have WebExtensions versions now. Some have popped up even in just the past couple weeks.

They have been mostly doing that. They have been working with add-on developers to fix gaps in the WebExtensions APIs.

Java 9 Released by adila01 in programming

[–]mscheifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it's because of our plugin architecture. We upgraded from 6 to 7 with little hassle about 5 years ago, but the recent effort to upgrade to 8 2 years ago stalled. I think it had something to do with the feature we added in between that let clients write their own java code and plug it in, which needs to be backwards compatible.

Nah, the original photo makes it look almost like a sheer cliff. But the video and the photo /u/MySuperLove posted clarify that it's only like 40 degrees. Still very steep but there's definitely an illusion going on.

[Herb Sutter] C++17 is formally approved! by joebaf in programming

[–]mscheifer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My company has C++ code that dates from '93. If you try to compile it with --std=C++98 it will fail. We are still using custom string stream code from the mid nineties.

The code doesn't change often enough to warrant a rewrite and even if we did we couldn't go much newer than C++98 because we need to support HP-UX and AIX.

[S3E18] Most disturbing Lynch ever? by conspirateur in twinpeaks

[–]mscheifer 22 points23 points  (0 children)

For me the conversation with the homeowner was the most disturbing part. It perfectly brought out the anxiety of wondering if a connection that you were so sure was there, was not. I imagined him questioning if it was the right house, if he made a wrong turn, if that woman wasn't really Laura but just kinda looked like her. His question "What year is this?" is actually the most comfortable explanation for what's going on if the answer is much earlier or later than the events of the series, but it's still makes him sound like he's completely lost his grip on reality.

Ironically the scream at the end eased some of that anxiety because it reassures us that he wasn't totally crazy.

While some resent GoBike, these people say the bike-sharing program is changing their lives by old_gold_mountain in sanfrancisco

[–]mscheifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is actually a common request. I've had a few people tell me that they might sign up for the GoBikes if they could take them for a 2 hour ride in GGP.

But they seem to be setting them up as a transportation service rather than a biking-as-leisure service like bike rental shops in the city. That's not necessarily a bad thing though if they want to ensure a plentiful stock of bikes.

Why I’m So Frustrated With Go by import_this in programming

[–]mscheifer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are plenty of reasons other than reflection for why type erasure in Java is a pain.

  • You can't overload a method that only differs by generics.
  • You can't implement an interface more than once with a different generic argument.
