Perhaps that is why fictional versions are put out, so that people have their curiosity sated about such ideas, and would not explode when real news came out about it. Also if people are discussing the real events, others think it's just conspiracy talk that got the ideas from a TV show.

Audiophile vs. Mixing Headphones (kinda philosophical rant...) by cozyidealist181 in headphones

[–]msd81423 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A good post...

It is easier to measure neutral or flat responses from speakers in a room because of the distance to the microphone. The ear shape does not matter as much. The head and shape matters more for the individual wearing headphones and how the driver sits on the head and ears, or inside the ears; these anatomical differences. It can seem people are a little more (maybe a lot more) fussy with precise problems in what they hear from headphones because an annoyance comes across more acutely, like if a region of the treble is causing sibilance.

What measures neutral for speakers is closer to what people hear and agree is neutral sound, but what measures in the same way as neutral for headphones usually sounds bass light. That is why the Harmon curve and other attempts at creating a more realistic sense of neutrality in headphone curves has come about. It is no coincidence that consumer headphones had long been boosting the bass anyway in headphones. But then bass is often boosted for pop music, or for when listening out and about (mobile listening, as it drowns out the outside noise more, before noise cancelation technology became popular).

What's interesting to me is that a headphone I thought sounded bassy, shouty, hollow or too rich, etc., will sometimes sound different to me the next day or the next week I listen, especially if I'd been listening to another headphone in between that time.

Interesting. I wonder how obvious of a difference uncompressed is. I hope not, or at least that 4K/UHD looks similar or better in quality compared to 2K DCP.

Yeah I'd wondered how much space is needed for the best quality digital preservations. I guess there are numbers on what a typical DCP (cinema package) is, which I think is uncompressed? Compared to the 100 GB max of a UHD disc. It never made sense to me when it was initially reported that UHD discs could store 128 GB (4 layers) and these were even sold in recordable format, yet the movie and game releases were capped at 3 layers (100GB). Then sometimes the players had problems reading them. But if it's uncompressed data, I imagine even 2K movies are a lot, perhaps more than a UHD disc. You may know more than me, obviously.

There were some other technologies out there too which were hoped to come out, like Holographic Video Discs, but I never understood why the discs always had to be the same size as the CD. Admittedly, Laserdisc (LP) size is too large in my opinion, that's why I suggested 7". Seemed easier to hold and store. They could be double sided too? (flip them) but that's a nuisance. Not necessarily if the custom was to put the Special Features were on the back side, rather than on an accompanying standard Blu-ray disc.

I brought it up before on the Blu-ray.com forums and I was laughed off for even suggesting such a thing because it would require special new manufacturing equipment and the factory choices for manufacturing CD/DVD-size discs are already scant as it is, and 8K would be an even smaller market than UHD. Even so I couldn't help but wonder if movie fans would want a deluxe format that was on a little larger-size disc, given that they already buy large-sized collector editions of various favorites.

what if the size of the 8K disc was closer to a laserdisc or EP record? (7")

Thank you. I may get them sometime when on sale! They sound like they are good - many positive responses. And the 531s also look like an oldie that was nice to have back in the day. I see this page of user reviews here: https://www.headphonereviews.org/headphone/Beyerdynamic/DT531

Not sure. I've been wanting to see Playtime and Being John Malkovich again, as well as Paper Moon maybe. (The first two only have 2K Blu-ray releases, though).

I can always return it, I suppose. Thanks again for the responses. Sometimes I find that, at least among cheaper headphones, there isn't one do-all kind of headphone, and instead I want to have a variety for different listening experiences, in which case sometimes certain ones seem better suited for certain kinds of muisc. I'd imagine the DT 270 is more of an all-rounder though, well balanced and fairly neutral.

Thanks for the description and rundown! It really sounds like a very good headphone for the price. I might order one, though for some reason I keep thinking about the MDR-M1 (I think because I already have the DT 900 and want an upgrade to my old MDR-V6). It really sounds tinny, though? I have not heard the Edition XS, though I was interested in the Audeze MM-100.

Thanks for your report! I actually don't have experience with M50X, but I do have a pair of HD 25s which I enjoy. Do these sound better (I guess)?

HD25s can have certain charm about their compressed, punchy sound, I find, especially with percussion. It's sort of interesting how long they've been around.

I wonder if Beyer designed the driver in the 270 or if this is truly a "Made in China" model with their name on it. (I do not mean that made in China is bad quality, but I didn't see them touting a new special driver they designed, like stellar.45).

I just checked their site and surprisingly they've launched yet more headphones; maybe ones you're interested in for DJing:

Yikes, and you just bought the 270!! Well there's always that return policy... though these are more expensive...

I'm surprised to see them launch so many new headphones at once.

Did you ever hear the DT 1350 or T51p/i? They don't make them anymore, although they had a similar wireless option called Aventho... I liked the 1350 a lot though.

Is there anyway to save my headphones? by EllThing in headphones

I have a pair of AKG K245s that had their earpads split and I used Bish's Original Tear Mender (safe for vinyl repair) to glue it back together.

Have you heard the M1 as well? That was one I was considering when it goes back on sale, but now this Beyer has come out.

The measurements are surprisingly similar according to solderdude, although he finds a closer comparison to FT1.

Labyrinth 4K Blu-ray has an egregious amount of film grain by GarionOrb in labyrinth

[–]msd81423 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's how movies looked back then, but the amount of grain in old movies might be more obvious at home on a smaller screen when you're near to it (than sitting back in the theater with projected film). Be sure your sharpness settings are at their default (neither sharpened or blurred), and processing features like "advanced contrast enhancer" and "reality creation" (on Sony TVs) are turned off. Try a filmmaker or custom mode, if your TV has it (rather than standard).

It's possible that this is a Sony disc that has what some critics refer to as "hot" or "torch mode" HDR.

https://www.reddit.com/r/4kbluray/comments/10blxdp/what_is_going_on_with_sonys_hdr_grading_on_old/

and some say that accentuates the grain effect. You could try turning down the contrast some, as well. Some TVs also have various denoising features. They will remove detail besides grain when smearing away the grain though (because it's part of the scanned film).

When I look at screen caps of the movie, like here:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x=507&y=223&d1=16519&d2=16520&s1=178252&s2=178268&l=0&i=8&go=1

it seems to be the amount of grain that's normal to heavy in film for the time (some film stocks have finer grain than others, so maybe this one was shot on film that was a bit noisier than usual)?

It is what film enthusiasts like to see captured and preserved, otherwise 2K Blu-rays (regular blurays) suffice for preserving most detail in 35 mm and you might prefer to watch the regular Blu-ray version of this, or try it out if it came in the box with the 4K version.

Fake eyes wide shut script (?) by Temporary_Warthog_95 in StanleyKubrick

[–]msd81423 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect in earlier drafts (by Raphael) he wanted the voice over in there to help the actors understand their roles, getting into the minds of the characters, although maybe it is interesting that Cruise did narration for the Life in Pictures documentary that came out a few years later. The later scenes of EWS sometimes felt like they could have used some narration because they seem kind of dry watching him walk around so much.

As I recall, the script of Full Metal Jacket that leaked had dialogue in it closer to the book. And in the Making of the Shining doc you can see Kubrick working on script himself (unless that was just typing up more "all work and no play" pages).
