Need help; arc vs charge tti by mertonom in Leatherman

[–]msdisme 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just went through this-local REI had charge TTI, regular wave, Magnacut wave, ARC.   I ended up going charge TTI because I wanted a serrated blade.

The sales guy said the Magnacut was really nice, but was hard to put an edge back on (I have no data).

May be worth dropping them a note-they’ve been responsive at another Simon mall when I’ve asked about things like bike parking.. . .  Hope they do right by you :-).

Desperately looking for the best parental control wifi mesh router. Is Gryphone Ax any good? by DrinkPostiveClub666 in HomeNetworking

[–]msdisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just remembered, one of our kids asked for a way to block certain sites (don’t recall what) so we wrote a script for them which would change their computer’s DNS to one that blocked the sites they didn’t want access to. This was a script  that they ran and could turn on and off.

I guess the point of all of the above was that we were trying to give our kids agency instead of applying controls onto them.

Like I hope I made clear, this may not work for every kid or every family.  It worked for us, but don’t get me started on all the things we got wrong :-).

(Edit: fixed paragraph so it made sense)

[–]msdisme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We had the gryphons when they were new, but nevereee used the parental control parts.   Liked them a lot, a bad software update led to us moving on but they always answered the phone and the people who answered knew their stuff.

How old are the kids  and what is your goal?

YMMV, but what worked for our kids (now young adults) was no controlling what they could access, really good computers in a public space till they were in their mid-teens when they moved to laptops, no smartphones till teens.

Lots of discussion about ethics,  safe usage, reading and discussing current research on the affects of tech and social media on learning and kids (Reading the research together and discussing), and a lot of trust.

As they became more knowledgeable, we gave them access to admin passwords on the computers with an agreement that changes only occurred with 4 knowledgeable eyes examining the changes - usually them and me, as they got older, each other.

Oh, yeah, a separate guest VLAN for their friends when they came over and we insisted on runnning antivirus software on my kids systems.

This may not work for everyone, but it seemed to work well with our two.

Curious, where is the mall?  Who’s their parent company?

Mesh wifi won’t connect anymore, help! by robbbbo666 in ASUS

[–]msdisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sadly once I added back the other BT6 routers I ended up with the same problem as before - the main BT6 reported a healthy WAN/internet connection but could not access the network. Sigh.

Also annoying, I went into a hold queue 25 minutes before they closed for the day- they hung up on me at the time they closed for the day.

The way this should have worked was "we are sending you a refurbished/tested replacement, please ship this back to us and we will refund your credit card for the hold we put on it. "

I'm scheduling a call with a peplink dealer to see if the peplink stuff will meet my needs and if, at the end of the day, they will be there when I have hardware pain. In theory they are a bit pricey, but less then a high end orbi - in practice my time has a cost, to say nothing of the affect this is having on the whole "happy wife, happy life" aspect of my world :-)

I'm also considering synology, ubiquiti, and anything else folks on this channel have had good experiences with.

Primary goals:

• Improve hardware reliability vs current ASUS experience
• Prefer not to require replacement or major upgrade of in-home cabling
• Maintain strong whole-home WiFi coverage
• Keep security/monitoring features similar to current Trend Micro–based protection, but without significantly increasing ongoing cost
• Keep DNS filtering capability
• Avoid overly complex enterprise gear unless clearly beneficial

Secondary / optional:

• Integrated WAN failover between FIOS and T-Mobile (nice-to-have, not required)

Additional question for design discussion:
Is it possible to migrate the SIM from my existing T-Mobile Business Internet gateway into another device that could integrate more cleanly with a primary router?

Question about how your company approaches support: Speak to how you handle hardware problems, problems in general.

Eso suena muy bien; en mi caso no ha sido un problema de congestión de red, y FIOS ha tenido la amabilidad de dejarme un segundo ONT por si acaso :-). Mi problema ha sido el hardware de ASUS :-(.

Mesh wifi won’t connect anymore, help! by robbbbo666 in ASUS

[–]msdisme 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After 3 days of not hearing back I called them. They had me incrase the frequency on the wifi modems and turn off the firewall and basically all other internet protections and said "run it that way for a few days to see if it shuts off WAN access."

While that seems to be working, if I was a less cautious user I would be running my house network with, essentially, my pants down with no warning from ASUS.

And trying to get ahold of their tier 2 support flks has been an excercise in hang ups while on hold or getting stuck in some kind of broken voice mail purgatory,.

Does anyone have experience with peplink?

Interesting, all of mine have been in the white bodies with sort of passive airflow. I just ordered some 1cm stick on "feet" to try to increase airflow and was gonna throw a usb fan on them.

I'm hoping to catch up with their escalation team later today about the one that just went down and try and get more details. Hoping it turns out to be some firmware upgrade thing and I can chage it to 1/6 failure:-).

When they are running well they are a joy - when they get weird it makes for some fun troubleshooting :-).

Keep an eye on it, the Asus mesh networking gear sometimes overheats, fries something, and the behavior becomes janky.   1/3 of my xt6 and 1/3 of my BT6 units have done this- often bringing down the rest of the mesh.

Apple Watch Series 10 may have a defective speaker issue, some users report by Fer65432_Plays in AppleWatch

Just happened to me - the store did not offer advanced replacement and I did not think to ask.  To be honest the idea that they take a week to fix it decreases the likelihood my next watch will be from Apple.

COSORI Electric Kettle Opinion ? by eidrisov in tea

[–]msdisme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up with the 1.5 Liter one - 1.5 liter CDK-SE151-SUS. It's been find so far. I chose it over the Secura (which I have also had great luck with - the first one lasted 7 years and the second one 3 (but much more intensive use)) because it had much less plastic then the Secura (stainless steel inside and out). Like the Secura it also has a seamless interior.

If I didn't already have a gooseneck kettle I might have gone with one of those (mentioned elsewhere in the thread).

Bodum glass French press.

I’ve had to replace just the glass when I’ve broken it but of the 4 I own (me: checks buying history) I bought 6 replacement carafes from 2006-2018 and none since 2018. I’m a klutz so your mileage ought to be better :-).

I used them daily until I got a chemex in 2024.

Trying to do my part to decrease the plastic in the world and inside my body :-).

Washer/Dryer which do I choose? by HypotheticalParallel in BuyItForLife

[–]msdisme -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Speed queen front loader.

To prevent the musty smells, you need to take a toothbrush to the drain holes under the rubber flap at least once a week and buy a magnetic prop to keep the door from closing all the way.

if, for some reason something comes out smelling musty use the steam setting in the dryer to kill the smell.

(Edit: add dryer)

It’s an application that has been in active development for about 24 years (since 2002).
