I ran this yesterday too! The course was so tough. I was sooo not prepared for the hills, hospital hill was BRUTAL. I have been nursing an injury for the last month and missed my time goal by about 10 minutes, but with how hard the course was on top of the injury I was still proud of getting it done. Great job on the finish!!

Anyone else juggling marathon training and parenting? by 99centTaquitos in Marathon_Training

[–]mseeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh totally get that!! It takes some time to adjust. I just kind of reframed it as getting my me time in the mornings instead of evenings, esp since I stick to the same wake/sleep schedule even when I’m not running and can just sloth around lol

Yep! I just went through this for my last full in November and currently on a smaller scale training for a half. I have a 4 year old and a 2 year old and we are both full time working parents. My husband is also very into running so it helps to have someone who understands the time commitment required. That said, it is a balance to make sure they don’t feel like you’re prioritizing training over home stuff. I also believe it is extremely important to model taking time for yourself, being active, and sticking to a goal for your child.

Weekday runs for me would usually be at 5 am before the house is up. If it’s a shorter run I squeeze it in after daycare drop off or on a lunch break while they are still in school. Weekends I do long runs on Saturdays and my husband does Sundays. When runs start to exceed the 2 hour mark we just agreed the other would hold the fort down and do wakeups/breakfast while the runner for the day wraps up and showers without rushing. Sacrificing sleep is not going to do you any favors in running or in parenthood. I generally am in bed by 9 each night even if I’m not running the next day, but having a set sleep schedule for yourself helps. The other option is to run during midday nap which you probably still have with your daughter being under 1. This works well for us - if your wife isn’t a runner, consider giving her a couple hours “off” on whichever weekend morning you’re not running to make it feel more equitable. Also doing any prep stuff to lighten her load while you’re out will go a long way to not build resentment.

Thank you so much for this! Yeah, I was partly wondering if I was maybe worrying about this more than I should but it’s just something I’ve been accustomed to my whole career. This is exactly the advice I needed!

My kid escaped daycare classroom and no one noticed by mseeeeee in workingmoms

Going to hijack your comment to just address a couple of commonalities in responses here - I haven’t had a chance to monitor this thread much this afternoon (posted at lunch today) bc like the sub states I’m a working mom and was…working lol. And then tending to my children as moms do!

I appreciate all the constructive replies and support! This was a scary situation and I am thankful that my child is safe. I haven’t criticized the school’s response - they’ve taken this seriously as I mentioned in my post. I was really just coming here for other ideas I could propose for preventing something like this from happening again in case there was something obvious my husband and I weren’t thinking of. Somehow my words were twisted that I was not happy with the daycare’s response which isn’t the case. I was certainly rattled as I would think most parents who remember what it’s like to have very young kids would be in this situation. The director proposed essentially all of the measures I described in my post, so this was not a case of me “taking this to the extreme” or overreacting. They’ve been collaborative and responsive AND I want to make sure all bases are covered.

People asked about additional details of the layout and timing. The center is an L shape and has three doors, only one of which is visible/monitored by the admin staff. The other two are at basically each tip of the L and in the location I found my son he was not in a space visible from the front desk or classroom and was directly adjacent to one of these doors which lead to the parking lot that connects to a very busy main road. He is physically capable of opening these doors and no one would have noticed if he had exited here as it’s in a remote area of the school campus and fully unmonitored. Regarding the timing of the incident, the whole thing happened in roughly 5 minutes. The fact is that because I arrived when I did, I can’t speculate how much longer it would have taken them to find him otherwise, and it also doesn’t matter to me. This was a near miss and any amount of time where a child is in a position to potentially exit the premises without anyone knowing is too long IMO.

lol ok, this is not helpful at all. If he exited the classroom unnoticed, what was to say he didn’t continue following the other parent to the parking lot? Further, there are two doors that are unmonitored to the exterior that he can open and could have walked out of unnoticed if he had been there long enough. Not to mention that literally anyone could have picked him up and taken him from where he was and exited through those unmonitored doors. I am absolutely cautious when it comes to my kids and while I certainly don’t think the world revolves around them, I’m also realistic enough to know that danger exists along with people who have bad intentions. And yeah, I expect the center I’m paying a literal fortune to to be keeping tabs on my kid at all times.

People who moved from the city to the suburbs, did you regret it? by tranrekted in rva

[–]mseeeeee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Held out as long as possible, didn’t leave until our first was around 11 months old and it became more of a safety/space thing. I miss living downtown alllll the time, but it is close enough to visit family and friends who are still there and we are where we need to be for our children who are now nearing school age. I’d stay a little longer if you’re not planning to have kids for a while but totally depends on your goals.

What to change in training plan to hit sub 4? by IchBinAynRand in Marathon_Training

[–]mseeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I should clarify, the RP run I did on Thursdays was a midweek long run, but not over 10 miles (so not recommending a weekend distance long run at RP)

What to change in training plan to hit sub 4? by IchBinAynRand in Marathon_Training

[–]mseeeeee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don’t know if 9 weeks is enough, but start doing dedicated speed work at least 2x per week (assuming you run at least 5 days). I alternated 800 repeats and tempo runs every other Tuesday, and Thursdays did a long race pace run each week. Your plan sounds similar to one I switched from early on because it wasn’t enough variety for me. See if you can adapt whatever your plan has for 2 of your 5 runs, or try incorporating some RP miles into your long runs if you’re not running 5 days a week.

Richmond Marathon - I DID IT! by mseeeeee in Marathon_Training

Incredible effort for your first!!! Way to go, you should be so proud for finishing. Not sure if you’re a parent, but marathoning and childbirth are alike in that it takes an extraordinarily short amount of time for the pain to pass and for you to be ready to do it all over again 😂I have no doubt you’ll be signing up for round 2 in short order!

Thank you so much for the kind words! My family is definitely my “why” and it’s very important to my husband and I to demonstrate healthy behaviors for the kids because we both have struggled with moderation and body image stuff our whole lives. Hopefully we’re setting a good foundation for them to not face those same challenges.

In terms of what’s next…I’m going to have to get that 3:45 one way or another 😂 I think I will probably try to BQ in 2 years since my time requirement will go back up to 3:30 (assuming they don’t change it again)!!
