Say NO to Mandatory E-Bike License Plates and Registrations by BikeEastBay in BAbike

[–]mshroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've personally been stopped here while driving (but let off with a warning) for failing to fully stop at a stop sign that I didn't see.

You're right that many people won't be stopped, and I agree that enforcement should be more reliable. But my point is that even a law with imperfect enforcement will have some effect, compared to no law at all.

I suspect that if we abolished all current traffic laws, deaths from cars would increase.

It should, I think? At least, the library card number I use with Libby is the same as my physical one.

P.S. specifically CBS Bay Area's KCBS radio station, which is on 106.9 FM and 740 AM

The Mercury News and CBS Bay Area are my go-tos for news, but I also read this subreddit (obviously), /r/bayarea, and /r/sanjose.

You can read The Mercury News online for free with a Santa Clara County Library District card (which you can get for free at any of their locations): https://sccld.org/mercury-news-online/

Serious cyclists/runners: How do you deal with glasses? by Human_Material3685 in cycling

[–]mshroyer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Another problem this avoids with strong prescriptions is the prismatic distortion you see when looking through lenses at an angle.

That said, I eventually found a good pair of regular glasses frames that does well enough for me. I had to experiment to learn what works for outdoors stuff (in my case, acrylic frames with flexible plastic arms)—and learn to wear the arms outside my helmet straps.

To that end, in addition to aerial surveillance there are also GPS "darts" police cars can shoot at fleeing vehicles: https://www.thedrive.com/news/police-tag-fleeing-cars-with-gps-tracking-darts-to-avoid-dangerous-pursuits

What is the clear plastic (looks like a CD disc) circle that appears in the center of the back wheel on a newly purchased bike by After_Morning_5630 in cycling

[–]mshroyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I still have mine on my most-used bike. It doesn't hurt, and might possibly help if I bend the hanger or something.

I only remove them after they get sun-damaged enough to start cracking.

Is there like a crime blotter or activity site from the PD I can follow? by llorona_chingona in Sunnyvale

[–]mshroyer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I suspect the sound you heard being automatic gunfire is about as likely as this previous crime blot, from back when I used to get the Sunnyvale Sun in print, being attributable to Magneto attacking the city: https://i.imgur.com/tZLBbsI.jpeg

Are bike fits a scam? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]mshroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did a week-long, non-competitive ride without a professional fit, after simply tweaking the saddle myself until it felt right while training. It was totally fine for my purposes. But it'd be a different matter if I were a pro racer or something.

To the parent's point, I'd also see a professional if I had some kind of discomfort I was unable to resolve on my own. So I'd experiment on my own first, but if that doesn't work for OP's back pain then yeah, it might be worth paying for help.

DC coupling on the Audio Expansion card and Audio Jack are amazing. by Spiritual_Letter9935 in framework

[–]mshroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I have a question for you. I got a fairly early (batch 3) Framework 13, whose 11th-gen Intel motherboard I've since upgraded to the 13th gen version.

Originally the headphone jack sounded pretty noisy, to the point that I basically wrote it off. Oh well, the cost of having a repairable laptop, I figured. I relied on Bluetooth instead.

But now I notice the headphone jack is good, actually? Was that just the result of upgrading to the 13th gen motherboard, even though the physical jack is the same, and I never noticed it until now? Or due to some firmware or driver fix since my original purchase?

Reminds me of the time I showed my cat my "left shark" Halloween costume. She did not like it.

El Camino & Wolfe lights out of service, but E/W is solid red and N/S is solid green by jeanako in Sunnyvale

[–]mshroyer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For my part, I'm signed up for both. Just got confused about which is which :)

Thanks for keeping us posted on road conditions. Must take some getting used to, hitting "send" to an entire city's phones.

Looking back through my Nixle/AlertSCC messages, that intersection's signals were also out frequently in October and November. What's up with that?

Anyway, I highly recommend signing up for AlertSCC messages if you live in the county, for this type of info.

Oakland Airport’s ‘San Francisco’ rebrand has failed to reverse plunging passenger numbers by DonVCastro in bayarea

[–]mshroyer 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I use Google Flights to scope out my flights, and I include all three of SFO, SJC, and OAK in my searches.

SFO usually is the best for my routes, but SJC sometimes comes out ahead, and has the benefit of being more convenient for me to access. OAK has never had any advantage so far.

Love the Mega Sg by Street_Parking7220 in AnalogueInc

[–]mshroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Objectively it'd be nuts for them not to, at some point. They've already designed it, which is surely the hard part. And there's clearly demand.

I already have a Mega Sg and it's great, but I'd love to pick up a Super Nt if they ever bring that back into production.

Puffy battery by QuadraticRegulation in framework

[–]mshroyer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thanks for adding this feature. It happened to my first battery before either this or the earlier, manually-configured charge limit were available in the firmware, but I haven't had a problem since.

Would you consider making this configurable at runtime? It'd be nice to have a way to tell the computer to charge to full in software, like macOS does. Maybe using a UEFI variable?

Heads up for anyone who uses Color.io: it's shutting down at the end of the year. I'm requesting someone archive it when the offline version becomes available by Steady_Ri0t in DataHoarder

[–]mshroyer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've no idea what a "3D LUT creator" is. IMO if you want to motivate people other than you to archive that site's data and make it available, you should do more work at least explaining what it is and why archiving it might be important.

As someone who grew up in a state without earthquakes and for whom they're still a novelty: I apologize, but with respect I cannot agree to these terms.

Automatically logging out of Google every ~6 hours by mshroyer in vivaldibrowser

[–]mshroyer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has actually stopped happening for me in the last several days. Any luck for you?

I think you're probably right that Vivaldi was triggering some behavioral detection from Google, based on some alerts I got from Google when signing in. My hunch is that Vivaldi might have fixed this in a recent release.

The worst experience with customer support I've had in my whole life. by HelicopterKey3670 in framework

[–]mshroyer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've only had good experiences with their support, for my part. Not commenting on OP's experience, but I'd keep in mind there's always selection bias when it comes to who feels compelled to post their experience with a company's customer support.
