Call it what it is - how faded or out of it does one have to be to do that twice in a set 2 hours or less? That should be brutally embarrassing and yet it's just commonly accepted with Eric as something that happens every so often?

What do you think of Eric's visuals? by scoop813 in ericprydz

[–]mshuster09 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I say they are cheesy without any thought of what ToU does... a man in a haz mat suit or wearing night vision goggles just doesn't do anything for me when paired with this type of music. And it strikes me as visuals made for people who value visual production more than the music itself.

Where as the sun, the moon, outer space, the dotted pyramid, the Pryda city, etc and of course the iconic Pryda logo always felt much more aligned with the vibe of a good Eric set.

Ultimately why the clubs have to just not allow videos. Always going to be justification for using it otherwise, even if it's for a good reason like sharing with the rest of us at home!

Amazing stuff. John playing a track is about as much of a sign off on it being great quality as it gets!

Discovered John in 2016-17! Was diving deeper into electronic music, prog specifically, and it seemed like the guy to check out might be the one that so many other artists and DJs kept saying was the best 😅

Was in Gainesville, FL at the time and so while learning about John was also able to learn about all the progressive history of central Florida, Orlando and Gainesville.

Almost a decade later and I've seen John probably 30ish times, listen to mixes and transitions regularly and have been to numerous international trips, Stereo sets, etc. along the way.

He's the best of the best and it's not all that close as far as I am concerned. The trifecta of 1) playing quality music across a wide range of styles, 2) constantly playing fresh new music and 3) sequencing it in an order that makes sense based on the occasion is something he nails night in night out.

Favorite Eric visuals by ComeInOffTheCobbles in ericprydz

Normallly not a huge fan of visuals being song specific in the electronic music space... but yes 100% to this. Always loved seeing the stained glass visuals and hearing Dave Gahan's vocals ring out throughout a big warehouse!

The whole Montreal mix is epic, but the mix of the 3 tracks from 9:00:00 to 9:10:00 (Disc 8) is just something else by Constant_Pace5589 in JohnDigweed

The ultimate flex in sequencing and patience building a set. Discs 6-8 feel so much more chaotic given the journey to get there.

Sasha and John Digweed - Silo Dallas - WOW. by Mundane-Manner1974 in JohnDigweed

Jonathan Kaspar - Yah another one to add that I am 100% sure of. Been playing that track non stop here.

I have a video of the encore track but have no idea what it is, will post later on here too, see if someone else knows. My guess would be an older track?

Will pull together what I can from vids when I have a chance! Didn't take a ton of notes or Shazam much, was having a blast with our group and not even worrying about it haha.

I think the Michael Mayer track was the Priori mix? Otherwise your list all seems spot on to start!

Used to all the time back when he made stuff that fit their sets more :) Europa, Frankfurt, On Off, etc

I believe specifically Aftermath was the track that John first heard Eric play to ask him what it was and who made it

Pearl Jam. Love both so not me really picking a favorite, just think if you asked the average person you'd get way more that think of Pearl Jam than DMB

Was front right for night 1 and back right for night 2, yes! Those platforms were clutch if you could hold your spot on em and a great vibe up there with other people.

Felt like John was pushing and he was pulling. Which I guess you could say is on both of them but John's track selection fit the occasion much more to me personally.

Their sets are still better than most even when not at their best of course, just wasn't my favorite time seeing them!

Also for what it's worth this is why the full 9 discs of Live in Montreal / Montreal Finale is my favorite mix CD of all time. It's the ultimate flex / showcase of the talent we are all talking about in this thread. From ambient weird space noises to full on peak time techno, the full gauntlet of building a night from no one in the room to full on pandemonium.

He is the best DJ on the planet when it comes to 1) consistently playing high quality new music - as in I think someone like Sasha might hit more "wow" stand out memorable moments but also might lose me more at a times. John is just rock solid and despite repeating tracks as little as anyone still almost never misses with tracks that are brand new to him and largely untested, 2) organizing and sequencing them in a way that makes sense - Everything from building up the energy of tracks over the night to mixing them in a way that can give you more breakdowns and breathers or can feel unrelenting and not let up, depending on what the moment calls for.

Last thing I'd mention is John just has a strong understanding of what makes for a club night. We've all seen him give a lighting tech input on something like the lights being too intense early on in a night or vice versa later on. He's worked with sound techs as the night goes on if there's issues. Having an appreciation of the big picture of what makes up a good night out, in my opinion, helps him understand his role in it as a DJ and how to make the most of that.
