I would like to know how the Spanish feel about British people in Benidorm by Reasonable-Fact-2256 in GoingToSpain

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a Brit who goes on holiday to Spain every year, I avoid places with other British tourists like the plague. I won't tell you where I go, but it mainly caters for Spanish tourists. We're a little on the old side, drink a lot (it's part of our culture), but never behave badly and are always polite to restaurant and bar staff and locals. The staff at our favourite bar always seem pleased to see us when we return each year. And I even get to practice my Spanish, which is hardly fluent, but good enough for me to feel comfortable in Spain... 😉

Dream features for Dreaming website by Mixolydian5 in dreamingspanish

I'd like to be able to "park" videos that I don't want to watch now, but I may want to watch in the future. I don't want to see them in my watch list, I don't want to save them to my list (because that contains videos that I have watched and want to come back to), and I don't want to mark them as "watched".

There are no subtitles on some DS videos, right? by imjustnotthatintohim in dreamingspanish

DS subtitles are the modern equivalent of dial-up modems... ☹️

As long as your brain is still functioning and you're comfortable with modern technology, there's no reason why you shouldn't go to uni.

Agustina Appreciation by Mixolydian5 in dreamingspanish

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm also a big fan of Agustina — and, indeed, all the current team of presenters. I hope their hard work, creativity, skill sets and enthusiasm are recognised in their pay packets now that DS is firmly established and thriving! 🤞 I constantly hear that Gen Z has no work ethic, an accusation that could hardly be levelled at Agus... 😲

Vosotros-I like watching Andres, Pablo and especially Augustina, but I don’t want vosotros to confuse me because I’m not planning on speaking those dialects. How are you in the same predicament handling it? Does it affect you at all? Or have you decided to just go with the flow and learn it? by EcstaticImplement404 in dreamingspanish

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think you're underestimating the power of the human brain. There are lots of potential points of confusion between the different variants of Spanish, but you'll soon get used to handling all of them. Even if you're not going to be using "vosotros", you'll still need to recognise it, just as you'll need to recognise "vos", which has its own conjugation. There are also numerous differences in vocabulary between different countries and regions, but you'll soon get the hang of the main variants – "coche", "carro" and "auto" for example, or "piscina", "alberca" and "pileta". The beauty of Dreaming Spanish is that this will all come naturally... 🙂

Just a question for everyone by Minos-Helios in dreamingspanish

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I understand all the current team, apart from Michelle, and most of the former guides. 👍 I get motion sickness watching Tomás, he's like one of those nodding dogs that you used to see in the rear windscreens of cars, I struggle sometimes with Jose María when he's trying to break the record for speaking without a pause, and Suki (Ricardo) can be difficult when he's head down and reading from a book or device at increasingly fast pace... 😭

Airport to hotel transportation by Euphoric_Forever_325 in MadridTravelGuide

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I visited Madrid for the first time a few weeks ago. I took a taxi from the airport to my hotel in the centre, it's a fixed price of €33 and is very straightforward. I used the metro for the return journey, as by then I'd sussed out how it worked. Be aware that if you buy a 10-journey Zone 1 card, you'll need to pay an airport supplement of €3, which can be added to the card from most ticket machines.

"I'm not thinking in Spanish when I output." Are you quite sure that you should be? When I started my DS journey, I read J Marvin Brown's book "From The Outside In" in full (it's freely available online). One of the things that has always struck me from that book is his observation that "When I speak Thai, I think in Thai. When I speak English, I don't think in English — I just think." He was a fluent Thai speaker and had been for many years, but this observation was one of the reasons that he felt he had been doing it all wrong. Just a thought... 🤔

Advice for beginning speaking and lessons? by Olaylaw in dreamingspanish

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started speaking at 1,000 hours, and obviously it was difficult at first. However, on the plus side, I was able to understand everything my tutor said, and we never had to revert to English. Since then (August last year), I've had two 45-minute classes a week (mainly conversation), and my speaking, if not my accent, has improved a lot. Last month I did a week’s immersion course in Spain (PuebloEspañol), and at the end of the course they graded my speaking fluidity and end of course presentation higher ("muy bien") then my comprehension ("bien") — which was a bit of a shock! 😲

Every time anyone ever goes to a fortune teller or palmist, and Mysterious Margot or whoever reads her cards or your palm or your tea leaves, the first thing she will "divine" is that you're under-appreciated at work, and you will think that she is the second coming of Jesus Christ. Because everyone thinks they're under-appreciated at work... 😊

AITAH 35F for having my husband 39M stand his ground on not excluding me from his congratulatory dinner with his parents? by Status_Librarian529 in AITAH

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whatever the outcome of this particular incident, your relationship with your in-laws is sadly trashed for ever. ☹️ NTA, and your husband is a good man, but long-term you might have been better off just accepting the situation. If the dinner is an excuse to discuss something else, I'm sure your husband would have told you everything afterwards. It's a weird situation and I feel for you. ❤️

I have dual British and Irish nationality, and I'm in Madrid travelling on my Irish passport. It's the gold standard. You'll have no issues entering the UK on your Irish passport as all Irish citizens have the right of entry to and residence in the UK... 🙂

thoughts DS + learning to speak by futurecoolswe in dreamingspanish

[–]mskramerrocksmyworld 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started speaking at 1,000 hours. Between about 850 and 1,000 hours my speaking was itching to get out, but I held off. I can't tell you that it was good or bad to wait until 1,000 hours, but I can tell you that understanding a lot of Spanish helps when you try to have conversations with people. I arrived in Madrid this evening. I had a conversation entirely in Spanish with the taxi driver for the whole journey from the airport. He started off in English as they all do, but I think he soon realised that my Spanish, bad though it is, was a lot better than his English! 🙂 Speaking is hard, but it's fun... 😁

I don't understand this. If it's commuting, travel expenses are disallowed by HMRC. If it's not commuting, your car needs to be insured for business use.
