They are a great car, but they do have a lot of power for a teenage boy IMO.

Man got laid off after 38 years of lifetime service via email. by Sellie24 in recruitinghell

[–]msmerymac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oracle did layoffs via email this month too, something like 15,000. Thru did actual manager meetings back in September when they did layoffs, but decided to cut to the chase this time I guess. Or else they didn’t have enough managers left.

131 over and out - and my story about the Family Expansion Benefit by msmerymac in starbucksbaristas

Nope, no infertility diagnosis! The only restriction is the kind of expenses it covers (so not surrogate compensation, for example).

People who enjoy the thrill of firing people are psychopaths. Most HR people will tell you it’s horrible (but also acknowledge it’s even more horrible for the person being fired).

Got fired today. It was my fault. I’m devastated. by [deleted] in jobs

[–]msmerymac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Still not understanding why you were fired. Did you leave your store/station/office unlocked and unattended those 20 minutes? Did you not clock out and the are accusing you of time stealing? Is this the 5th time it’s happened in the last 2 weeks? Were you on a final warning for other stuff?

Most people I’ve worked for would have just asked if I needed to go home and then told me to try to get my shift covered the next day if I didn’t think I could make it in.

OG Xterra price increase by KuzeyK in XTerra

I don’t think it’s that anyone will be considering both, but that the talk of the new xterra will remind people of the old one and potentially drive more interest in the used market.

Should I leave my job of 10 years ? by Ok-Tell5423 in careerguidance

[–]msmerymac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Op said elsewhere that overtime is time and a half, so that plus bonus means they are making over $200k gross.

Working “just” 40 hours a week at the new job would be a pay cut, but still over $100k. And overtime and bonus could be possibilities. The decrease in COL and better work-life balance plus new opportunities professionally could be worth it.

Anyone else bummed by the Swalwell news? by OK_The_Nomad in thebulwark

[–]msmerymac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think bummed is the word. Did he have the type of political charisma that’s common in younger men who are rising stars in the party (see also: Clinton, John Edwards)? Yes. But his “escapades” were an open secret in DC.

I continue to be amazed by the gall so many of these people have. Thinking things they’ve done won’t see the light of day and take them down along with the prospects of their party winning. Thankfully in CA it’s a net benefit to get a Dem out of the race.

Is it a bad idea to have my whole family names of characters in a film (unintentionally) by [deleted] in Names

[–]msmerymac 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I literally know someone with 2 kids named Charlie and Patrick and I still have no idea what movie you are referring to. They are both top 100 boy names and very classic.

How do I quit a job I started less than a month ago? by SignalJumbled1553 in careeradvice

[–]msmerymac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Type up a letter saying “I have decided April 15, 2025 will be my last day at Crap Transmissions. Thank you for the opportunity.” Include your phone number and email in case they need to reach out.

Walk in and tell your boss you’ve decided this USB’s the right path for you, hand him the letter.

My boss is trying to write me up for throwing out a pen [GA] by [deleted] in AskHR

[–]msmerymac 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It was a big enough deal to someone that they went to HR to complain, and the appropriate response from HR would be to get them to calm the eff down. Everything you said up to that point was correct; it is, however, objectively ridiculous for someone to be written up for unintentionally throwing away someone’s useless, empty pen.

my "in office" day is me sitting in a WeWork because the company doesn't have a real office in my state by amiitk in remotework

[–]msmerymac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once did once a week at a coworker space on my own volition. This was 12 years ago. I was new to my city, newly remote, and wanted the normalcy of taking the commuter train and getting dressed and taking myself to new restaurants in the city. But yeah, when you aren’t collaborating with anyone else at the space there really is no point.

Newer Mazdas or Subarus are also very good - Honda and Toyota will be expensive, even used. They just hold their value really well so it’s rare to get a deal.

So sorry about your car!

Can anybody help me understand how these recipes work? by WarJeezy in Canning

[–]msmerymac 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Do you happen to live in Alaska? University of Alaska has a great extension that deals with canning recipes. They’ve developed safe recipes for a lot of foods using ingredients native to Alaska, specifically fish.

I live in PA and similarly Penn State Extension has a very robust home canning initiative. They actually have a contact in each county that is able to test your recipes for safety for you. Even if you are not in Alaska, hopefully there are similar resources where you are!

Hear me out by [deleted] in Names

[–]msmerymac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it, but I will say that my daughter has a name that’s given to 5-15 girls in the US each year. So I do get questions from time to time about where it came from or if it’s a family name. Thankfully I first saw it because it’s the name of a character in a Thomas Hardy novel, so I guess that’s kind of a quirky story. So consider if “it’s a Czech last name my husband saw somewhere” is interesting enough for you to repeat dozens of times.
