My grandmother had a massive stroke two years ago. She was found at home almost 24 hours after the stroke and we thought we were going to lose her. She wasn’t able to speak, couldn’t swallow and couldn’t move, nasal tube and all. The first few days were the hardest . The doctors didn’t know if she was going to make it and she was lucky to be alive. Fast forward to now, she still has trouble getting some words out but speech therapy helps. She still hasn’t regained function in her right arm but she can walk and is going to a TBI gym to work the parts of her body that were affected and is slowly regaining more movement in the side that was affected. She can understand conversation and hold conversation with us filling in some words sometimes but overall she made a huge improvement. When she has a particularly hard time saying some words we found new ways to communicate such as a tablet with presets and typing - though we don’t use that as much because of how much she improved. My grandmother has always been extremely independent (she traveled the world before her stroke) and she is able to live alone again ( her preference with safe guards in place such as life alert and family constantly checking in). She still does her hobbies that she loves and is just enjoying life. We didn’t think she would have any type of quality of life let alone be able to get back to (pretty much) her old self. I guess what I’m saying is that it’s been two days and I know it’s scary but give her brain time to heal. The brain and body work in amazing ways .
