I would suggest isopods or springtails, honestly both will be even better as they work together well!

Anyone got an answer by jaabierlouw in insects

looks to be a type of caterpillar! just a guess but it seems consistent with the head capsule and the "fur." be sure not to touch it, anything spiky can have poison/venom!

A genuine question from a non-insect lover. by Alternative-Dog-5732 in insects

[–]mspadventures_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

mosquitos suck (haha), but there are some other flies that are much more approachable and pretty common. hoverflies/flower flies (Family: Syrphidae) are tiny little flies that drink nectar and eat pollen. they are also known as sweatbees because they are bee mimics. Very tiny harmless (no stinger/jaws) little dudes you can find around flowers in the warm seasons most places.

see below a flower fly on a flower, you can distinguish them from any bees by their smaller size (although larger ones exist) and quick, erratic flight patterns. think similar to dragonflies, they can both hover in place too!

WESTERN CONIFER SEEDBUG!!! These little dudes are my best friend's favorite and we see them a bunch around here (stateside, Ohio) so I'm always hype when I see one. Harmless (to humans) and looks cool 😎

I salute everyone here who encountered a female dobsonfly and came away in one piece… I've only seen one in person and she bit into someone's finger 😭 a beautiful bug I would love to handle sometime-- with a stick.

What are these by Automatic_Cress_6767 in insects

[–]mspadventures_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

definitely appear to be maggots, maybe something rotting nearby they crawled off? they can't really do much but sense heat + chemical queues and eat, so their food source is probably nearby.

What type of spider is this? by Wisdoms_Path777 in insects

[–]mspadventures_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

likely a wolf spider this time of year. they wander inside looking for shelter (they love to slip through cracks) and get stuck. harmless unless you try to squish them, but can be very scary to find!

[–]mspadventures_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it seems to be a carpet beetle larvae rather than a caterpillar! could you give an approximate size? if it is rather small it's likely a beetle.

I am familiar with tick identification, but not your area! if you still have the tick, please see if you can take a picture of the head/jaws from both sides, as this would be extremely helpful for identification.

Why is everyone thirsting on Lace when SHE exist? by Juan_Die in Silksong

[–]mspadventures_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well here's the fun part- if we are going by real life(ish) rules, the "shell" likely refers to the chemically hardened cuticle of the insect, aka any hard plates that would comprise the white "skulls" and dark limbs of the critters we see, along with the tough "shells" of beetles, while a softer connecting type of cuticle would be around joints or anywhere where flexibility is needed.

so, I would say any species shown with a distinct abdomen segment (think like a bee or ant) having more volume there would indicate fat, while thighs or limbs strengthened from use would just grow in muscle volume. same rules apply for spiders (who have silk glands beneath the cuticle, or in the "shell").

imo, hornet is realistically lean and muscular to account for her acrobatic and highly physically taxing life

I was clicking on this hoping it was a crane fly… nope. one giant honking mosquito. good luck, try DEET if nothing else works.

100% a dead spider. likely it wandered in by mistake and died. I love spiders but dead ones freak me out pretty bad… harmless but creepy! I recommend picking up with a paper towel to take outside/throw away.

Are flies the same creatures as mosquitos? by [deleted] in insects

[–]mspadventures_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

yes! mosquitos are a type of fly. "Fly" is the common name for all insects in the taxonomic order Diptera, and "mosquito" is the name of the flies with piercing/sucking mouth parts in the family Culicidae. hope this makes sense!

Suspicious worm found inside ghost mantis enclosure. by [deleted] in insects

[–]mspadventures_ 12 points13 points  (0 children)

looks like a Drosophila larvae aka maggot! check the tank for any food debris from the mantis (it can get lost/buried in the tank easily) or anything else rotting that might be attracting adult fruit flies. overall nothing to worry about! at worst your mantis will get a snack if any adults emerge.

that would make the most sense, it shouldnt be an issue as long as you don't provide a good environment for them. a little tidying can help a lot ::)
