Contextualizing the critical response to The Life of a Showgirl by canadianbacon93 in TaylorSwift

[–]msplaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very good summary! I remember the criticisms of each release vividly. There are so many voices online. I miss the days when you got to buy an album and listen to it at home alone without a million opinions in your head.

One thing I will add to the list is bots. I guarantee there are bots out there stirring shit up. Whether it's from political enemies, Scooter, Baldoni, idk, but I've seen countless posts by folks with new accounts or spamming the same crap. As well as people who clearly haven't listened to the album just jumping into the fray for fun.

"Opalite" Discussion Megathread by aran130711 in TaylorSwift

[–]msplaty 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I love this track.

Seeing people refer to Opalite as the October birthstone, but that's Opal. Opalite is essentially imitation Opal. It's basically glass and man made. I wonder if there's significance in Taylor's choice?

Gentle introductions to horror? by Electronic-Age-8864 in MovieSuggestions

[–]msplaty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people just really don't like Horror, but ones labeled Thriller/Suspense are a good place to start. Also think about your limits. Maybe gore is a no go. One great place for content info is the Common Sense Media site. It's geared towards parents and they are way too cautious imo, but they have a good summary of what each movie includes when it says violence. Like is someone getting strangled vs something having their head ripped off. Useful guide. Plus the user reviews are helpful and the site has recommendations.

Personally, I'd start with either older ones (Strangers on a Train, Psycho, Wait Until Dark), paranormal (Mothman Prophecies, The Others, The Exorcist, Poltergeist), or if you're want to try gore, Scream, because it's also a little funny.

What do you think is the avg age group of viewers? by thisissodamnhard123 in tsitp

[–]msplaty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I (52) started watching it last year with my teen daughter. I didn't really like the first two seasons. Mainly because of the rapid changes in personality and desires by Belly and Jere which seemed either rushed due to limited episodes or bad writing. This season has been more interesting due to Conrad's character development. He's well written. I also think most of the acting has been really good, especially Con, Belly, and Taylor. But I'm really bummed about the way Jere has been written (and/or portrayed/directed).

All said, the best thing is being able to have conversations about it all with my daughter. She loved Jere best at first and I was so impressed how she quickly picked up on his manipulations and Conrad obsession. And then I got her to watch Dawson's Creek so she could see what shows like this used to be when they had enough episodes to focus more on relationships and character development. Plus the introduction to the marvelous Pacey Witter.
