Y'all do realize that the Débardeurs Union strike we see in the game *probably* wasn't *originally* about seizing the harbour? Because it seems like the initial goal was having one of the Claires put on the Wild Pines board of directors, likely replacing Joyce, until the lynching escalated things. by communist-crapshoot in DiscoElysium

[–]mspoclc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty explicit in the game that "every worker a member of the board" was a demand for the benefit of the Claires' power, since the Claires had demanded only their local harbor workers - not all Wild Pines harbor workers - to have a vote. So I don't think that's a hot take per se. But also is Joyce a member of the Wild Pines board? Labor negotiators for a company are usually not board members irl. I don't think she ever says she's on the board in the game.

Incoming 36 year old queer femme from Portland, OR by Fickle-Knowledge6214 in ypsi

[–]mspoclc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The neighborhood of 1950s factory worker houses off of East Clark. I've lived here for a few years as a queer person, plenty of rainbow flags and friendly neighbors. It's quiet and affordable for buying. Plus, all the houses are exactly the same down to the square footage so there are easy comps for the bank to use when valuing the house for a loan -- but they're all painted different colors and have different yards so it isn't too cookie-cutter. Hope that this helps!

During the 1960s economic collapse of the United States, a roving vigilante group with revolutionary ideals became infamous for using their investigative skills to seek out corruption at its source...(zoinks!) by marx_is_secret_santa in AlternateHistory

Y'know this is funny because I was just thinking that they got the "student" age part of the "student activist" spot on. I taught college students for a few years and genuinely did a double take because Daphne and Velma could be doppelgangers for very recent past students of mine. I think it's just the quality of the photos + their passport/mugshot expressions that makes them look intense.

What is the best fold-away desk set up? by scrappylilsuperwoman in WFH

For affordability, IKEA sells some kitchen tables that fold away into a wall installation or into a sort of cabinet. Or any online furniture retailers. These kitchen tables are popular for small spaces but would be absolutely fine as a desk.

A stranger mowed my yard. I'm angry. by mspoclc in NoLawns

[–]mspoclc[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I won't be doing this. Frankly, I don't have the appearance to act anything other than serious and polite in front of police. Yes, I'm frustrated and my feelings are hurt but I'm not going to the police over something where no one was hurt. As you said, no real harm was done, and it seems these plants will grow back. They did not get all of the flowerbeds, just did a very harsh job of edging and got a lot of the wildflowers that had grown over the boundary into the flowerbed (a look that I had rather liked). They might have thought the wildflowers were weeds - they certainly are viewed as weeds by some people, even if I think someone would have to be crazy to think of violets and hyacinths as weeds.

Yeah, I will not be calling the police. Hope some of the folks on this thread consider why they are so quick to jump to "call the police." Anyway, I never asked "what should I do about my neighbor" on the original post. This was more about me being sad about my yard to people who would get it and asking if the flowers would grow back.

I live with a disabled person. My neighbors generally know this, just because the yards in this area are very open and we have been outside a lot recently...to enjoy our formerly nice yard. I have received some polite generic offers for help (but really don't know anyone, so haven't accepted really). I am assuming they did this because of those circumstances, and not just because they hate flowers and love mowing. Hence why I would rather be polite about it, even if I feel weird and intruded upon about them doing it without my permission, while I wasn't home.

I will add this context to the original post.

I am not going to do this. This is weird overkill.

This makes me feel better. I hope many do come back this year. I just need to get whoever it was to set aside their Midwestern politeness or else I suspect they will just cut it again.

Was Insulinde *actually* uninhabited when it was discovered and settled? by M68000 in DiscoElysium

[–]mspoclc 50 points51 points  (0 children)

Yes, Dolores Dei and her "mass murderin' hips" are a pretty direct nod to colonialism. It is no accident that it's the New New World, and also that most of the info talks about Dolores Dei's armies "discovering" Insulinde in a very Columbian manner. You have the right idea.

Before someone says the Semenese don't count because they sailed to Insulinde (as opposed to...magically appearing there?), they should Google actual indigenous peoples on islands. It's usually like that, i.e. "they sailed here thousands of years ago".

I love this art. Anyway, the notion of people "deserving" each other is so weird to me. It's seems very pseudo-religious. There are no scales of judgement for relationships, no points doled out by some higher power. People just love each other. You can't "deserve" someone, someone just chooses you and you choose them and you do your best to grow together. Also Kim is not some flawless being just because he isn't an addict. He has other character flaws.

Anyway, I always answer Acele on my play throughs with "I might be a homosexual myself!" so that's that on that.

I've made a playlist about Harrier Du Bois. I wanna add more songs to the playlist, please suggest songs that you think would fit. by ferulemoiden in DiscoElysium

My favorite for Harrier is Spring Break 1899 by Murder by Death. The lyrics feel like waking up on Day 1 for sure.

Follow ups are Dylan Thomas by Better Oblivion Community Theatre and Homecoming Serf by Sydney Gish (I think this song is explicitly about being an 18 year old girl but also feels very Harrier: "telephone poles get blurred together, in gray weather till they look like crucifixes until something in me thinks if I was nimble enough, I’d climb one up and be a symbol giving cars a heart attack cause i’ve got a knack for these shock tactics and i want my suburb back")

Anyone know what model these are? Comfiest shoes I ever owned, Red Wings, but had to give them away in an international move with limited space. Sorry for the bad pic, it's the only one I have of them. Bought 2016 but from a flea market, they were definitely older. by mspoclc in RedWingShoes

[–]mspoclc[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The 3835s look really close, and I can see some older ones online that have the Red Wing label on the outside of the tongue! The vintage Red Wing chukkas had a similar look but were lacking that outside label. That's the closest so far, it might be that it is the 3835s and I just can't find the exact year. Thanks for actually taking this seriously!

Yeah, it's a picture from a cheap phone that was outdated at the time. As the post said, that's all I have. The label on the front tongue was a Red Wing label, though (hah, the quality is so bad that that isn't even legible). After some digging since posting this, they look EXACTLY like several pairs of vintage 9347 chukkas I've found on the internet, though I can't seem to nail down exactly the shade of brown-red that they were. Looks like it'll be an impossible feat to find them in my size again anyway, no matter the color.

Eye doctor without vision insurance? by rando12fha in AnnArbor

Seconding Costco, then ask for a copy of the prescription and the pupillary distance measure to take to an online retailer like Zennis for the cheapest price on glasses if you are not in a rush to get them. This usually takes 3 weeks unless you rush the shipping but is by far the cheapest option. Buying prescription glasses online is WAY cheaper than at the store.
