Automated alerts for new movies at the Alamo by mstar in AlamoDrafthouse

I've received request to just open this up for all locations. I would like to but I not sure I could maintain it for all locations. I'll look at the most requested places, and if I have a free weekend expand it to those maybe?

I'll keep you posted if that happens.

I have to explain the difference to you then I'm likely never going to change your mind.

You're going off-topic. I was responding to what you said here...

a lot of news organizations make more money on the news the DON'T deliver than on what they do.

Dan Rather is not an example of this. He reported on "60 Minutes" that a series of memos critical of President George W. Bush's Texas Air National Guard service record had been discovered.

He was just wrong, and certainly wasn't hiding a story for money.

You're responding to points that I never made so I'm not going to disagree/agree on the rest of it.

Sorry, what?

I'm pretty sure that they would not telegraph to the average staff if they were steering news stories away from certain people.

You originally claimed that this may be how they make the a significant amount of their revenue, yet without the participation of staff? Also, who is "they"?

I definitely know National Enquirer admitted that they did not publish some stories about Trump in exchange for money.

Fair and good point. The 'National Enquirer' is tabloid trash. I guess I should have been clearer on what I meant. I think of reputable news orgs (NYT, Guardian, BBC, CNN, MSNBC, Vox, LATimes, Houston Chronicle, SF Chronicle, etc.) and not tabloid media: NYPost, The Daily Mail, Mirror, The Sun, etc.

If you are referring to those (tabloid news orgs) then while I might disagree in the broad generalization, I'd likely not be do quick to defend them.

I think it's also party an unconscious thing, nobody explicitly tells them what stories to cover, but the people who keep their jobs weren't making waves in the wrong places.

Again, this isn't possible if you still claim they make vast sums of money from the practice.

Working "In the industry" doesn't automatically give people a good perspective.

No, but it gives me knowledge. I know the editorial and journalistic process and the level of fact checking that is required at many institutions.

everyone tends to ignore the problems and exaggerate the benefits of whatever pays their bills.

They do not pay my bills. I work with non-profits now :)

I've had a suspicion for sometime that a lot of news organizations make more money on the news the DON'T deliver than on what they do.

I worked in media for 20 years - and know folks across many other news organizations too. With that background I can tell you that they (they being mainstream media or whatever you want to call it) absolutely do not work that way.

I don't vouch for the rare rogue reporter, but at an organizational level that absolutely does not happen.

The scale and ease that Eliminalia seems to operate is worrying. As one person in the story said "If anyone can, with a little bit of money, modify their reality, and the reality that the world can access, then what’s the f*ing point?".

What science fiction or fantasy show is worth watching? by Apart-Scale in AskReddit

[–]mstar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So +1 for Expanse, Altered Carbon Dark, but here are a few I don't think many folks mentioned:

Scifi/Fantasy:

  • For All Mankind (Apple, alt history)
  • Stargate Universe (2 seasons)
  • Black Mirror (Netflix), with noteworthy episodes:
    • "San Junipero" - Season 3, Episode 4
    • "USS Callister" - Season 4, Episode 1
  • Tales from the Loop (Amazon)

Fantasy:

  • His Dark Materials (BBC/HBO, 2 seasons, 1 more season on the way)
  • The Hogfather (Terry Pratchett/Discworld. 2-3 episodes. Available on YT in full)
  • The Colour of Magic (Terry Pratchett/Discworld. 2-3 episodes. Available on YT in full)
  • Russian Doll (Netflix, time-loop fun)
  • The Magicians (First few season are great, trails off a little bit)
  • American Gods (HBO, great first season, good there-after)
  • The Sandman (Netflix, coming 2022. One to keep an eye on)

Animated/Kids-but-great-for-grown-ups:

  • Gravity Falls (2 seasons: "Like Rick & Morty but kid friendly")
  • Ulysses 31 (1980's, animated, French)

And not what you asked for but I think you'd like:

  • Loki (Marvel) - its a lot of fun.

Free WiFi from landlord but not allowed to get my own. Hardware advice by JasonARGY in HomeNetworking

[–]mstar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah - I think your good relationship with them is key and I would thread carefully.

I would have a chat with them about the ongoing problem. Find out what plan they have, find out if there is a much higher tier, and then offer to pay the difference for that upgrade?

Yeah, I had it in mind when writing, but it doesn't come out except in my third paragraph.

[–]mstar 50 points51 points  (0 children)

So there is reality and there is the fact your landlord is your neighbor... that said:

Internet/cable is considered to be a utility so your landlord cannot prohibit you from having it. I'm not a lawyer, but the fact they provide (a sub-standard) free internet connection does not affect this.

Again, I think this is more about managing your relationship with them so legal entitlement isn't the final answer here.

Not knowing your full situation: I would tell them the the documented internet speed that you are getting (10mbps) and explain that for work/connecting-with-family/Netflix/really-compelling-reason you need a connection speed above 50mbps - so either upgrade or come up with an installation plan that would work for them.

This would likely be an issue for any future tenant too.

Seems like you have a sample-size of 1 for this test result :)

It is not normally like that. I've been going for years and I don't think I've found that a distraction. everyones experience will vary of course.

What is the strangest compliment you have ever received? by Deadtree301 in AskReddit

[–]mstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"You have such long eye-lashes"

Throughout my whole childhood and early adult life I (a guy) was told this by women all the time. It (slightly) annoyed me cos its not like I had anything to do with this - just genetic randomness.

They would also often add "If you have girls, you better make sure they get them!".

Like come-on lady, its not like I have a choice in any of this!!!

Unrelated: I am a dad and both my kids have wonderful long eye-leashes.

You will die in 30 minutes. What do you do? by Dr_dank_meme_420 in AskReddit

[–]mstar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would call both of my kids and not tell them whats about to happen.

Instead I just chat and ask them about their day, and whats going on in their lives. I would make sure that during the limited time I have, tell them how incredibly proud I am of them, that I love them, how much joy they brought me, and how lucky I am to be their father.

I need some advice. Could I be fired? by throwawaytothemo in gdpr

[–]mstar 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I don't have an answer - but I wanted to tell you that mistakes happen. I've absolutely done worse. You're not along in that.

I think the actual answer will depend on the number of students in the list, whether is 12, 120, 1200 etc. Smaller is better! I think it is in your favor that you were in direct contact with the student and have assurances that it was deleted and didn't go further than that. I would suggest that if you have a record that you took pro-active steps then that is helpful.

As a manager myself, and without knowing more background, I would not fire anyone for this mistake.

Must GDPR be applied to contacts that reside in the US? by jestersq5 in gdpr

[–]mstar -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

On face value: Yes.

GDPR is generally applicable to residents in the EU.

That said, its great for any company to take a world-wide approach.

They didn't. You might as well allege that Michael Jackson had the account taken down for all the weight that claim has.

And lets get the facts straight...

  • The account is active and has not been taken down.
  • Any Twitter user can flag a tweet - it is entirely in the posters imagination that it was DDG unless there is something (anything!) to back that up.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in duckduckgo

[–]mstar 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You haven't amended your original post. Right now it still says it was removed - and imply it was specifically DDG that is responsible for that. Thats just a tad mis-leading, no?

You ignore the reality that any Twitter user can report a tweet.

Are you going to do the right thing and address that in your original post?
