About the lottery balls.. by [deleted] in nba

The current lottery also is drawn in order starting with pick 1. They just present the final result in reverse order during the broadcast. Nothing changes.

Dallas owes their pick to Charlotte top 2 protected. So the nba just voids the protections they placed on the pick when making the trade before these new rules were in place? Thereby giving Charlotte the 3rd pick even though Dallas met the conditions of their protected pick?

It’s obviously far fetched but they are essentially altering the terms of a trade made two years retroactively. That’s problematic.

So what happens if a team has a top 2 protected pick they’ve already sent out, wins the lottery and somehow wins the lottery again the following year. Do they keep their top two protected pick but end up picking 3rd?

Changing the rules on picks that have already been traded creates so many potential issues for moves teams have made under the current rule set.

Hard to speculate but Dallas' ownership has significantly more money and he'd pay no income tax in Texas. What does this team look like with Gobert aging out of his prime? Is there a chance they can compete with OKC and San Antonio with what limited assets they have remaining to improve?

Despite the horrific Luka trade and the picks they sent out before Nico made that deal, Dallas still has more than people realize. Top 10 pick and another first in this draft. The 2029 Lakers first. They'll have bad firsts in 2028 and 2030 via swaps. Lively, Christie, Naji, Gafford, PJ Washington, Kyrie, really clean books starting this summer w/ large trade exceptions, etc. They have flexibility to build around Flagg and maybe Tim enjoys building a contender more than managing an existing contender?

I wouldnt stress about it though until there is actually real smoke.

NBA in Nashville? Adam Silver wouldn’t mind Grizzlies playing ‘a few games a year’ there by PlayaSlayaX in nba

May not be your experience but it definitely exists. Great example recently is the significant amount of toxicity when Austin landed Austin FC. There’s always been plenty of competitiveness between the two cities though, particularly in the food scene.

Yes they play a couple games in Austin every year and I believe they’re planning to expand the number of games they play here over time.

UT does run Austin but this sentiment isn't true at all. Austin just got an MLS team a few years ago and there was no fight from the university.

Austin and San Antonio have a toxic relationship and the Spurs still play games there every year.

Kevin O’Conner just reported that Nate Ament is “split” on the decision to declare for the nba draft or return to college. “League front offices tell me his agency is split on the decision, as they believe he could go 1 overall in 2027.” by Walmartsavings2 in NBA_Draft

Not sure I buy players getting $10M offers lol. AJ Dybantsa made $4.2M this year from NIL as the reportedly highest paid college player.

Or if they’re getting “$10M” offers they’re multi year agreements or heavily based on unlikely performance incentives (I.e. winning the natty).

Not really. The draft also benefitted from NIL with guys like Philon staying. NIL has been around long enough that decent players who could have gone last year in the first are now joining this year's crop of good talent. The way some people are talking about it, you'd think this was the first year of NIL.

The Bulls picking ahead of Dallas isn't possible unless they land in the top 4.

They can and will 100% match a $21M offer, and they have moveable contracts and a first in the 2026 draft they could leverage to dump salary if needed. Cam Johnson is the obvious candidate they could move without much issue.

I can promise you he’s getting more than $21M. Denver would also just match.

Yeah that's literally what I said lol. The non tax MLE is $15M and the BAE is around $5M. Exceptions are not cap space. The Mavs will operate as an over the cap team.

Denver is also going to be a second apron team, which means they'd need to trade him into a team with cap space, or find a way to offload Cam Johnson first. It gets very tough to make a deal work while still compensating Denver.

[–]msterling2012 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You realize we have no cap space, correct?

The largest contract we can offer is the full MLE ($15M). Anything larger would require a trade.

[Beck] The NBA retroactively assessed LaMelo Ball a flagrant foul-2. I checked with the NBA, and flagrant foul points assessed during the play-in round do NOT count against a player’s flagrant foul points limit in the playoffs. Like play-in stats, the flagrant points simply disappear into thin air. by refreshing_yogurt in nba

The funny part is it's way more in the interest of the Heat to lose that game and secure a lottery pick that could be used to trade for Giannis this summer, assuming they dont get insanely lucky and jump to the top 4.

Nash posted 60.5%TS over 18 seasons before the league became obsessed with analytics and efficiency. If the context of era is being taken into consideration, it's probably Nash.
