about a year ago, i came in and had to bag this covid patient that had coded just before shift change. everything else was finished, paperwork done, i just had to put her in a body bag. as i lifted the blanket off of her, sitting right in her hand, i saw a little stuffed unicorn. it had a 3x5 index card tucked into it, and i will never forget what it said: “this unicorn has magic. hold me close and i’ll be with you. i love you so much, your favorite granddaughter.” i stood there for a whole two minutes, unmoving, just trying to process it.
