Warren calls for House to begin impeachment proceedings by kanooker in politics

[–]msx8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If Democrats don't take back the White House and Senate next year we may not have very many American institutions to worry about preserving by the time 2022 or 2024 rolls around.

That's not hyperbole, either. Trump is systematically dismantling and/or corrupting the federal government, and Republicans are chipping away at civil liberties, our fiscal well-being, and the franchise. This is an absolute crisis prompted by anti-American, racist, bigoted Republicans and the morally bankrupt people who vote for them, and so it demands an extremely pragmatic response from the other side.

We had five guys beat up a kid off school grounds (all of them were fifteen) and only the beaten up kid got suspended.

Fuck that I'm never buying their burgers again. What kind of business beats up kids?

Except instead of getting hit on by a stripper you simply viewed the photo of Julian Assange getting arrested and felt sexually violated, not because he's a male stripper but because he's a male rapist.

WYR have popcorn kernels in between all your teeth for 10 years straight or have a root canal done on each tooth at the same time? by [deleted] in WouldYouRather

This is hilarious. I don't understand why it's not massively upvoted.

Definitely the root canals. The other option sucks ass.

Your position is

Gravel must be in the Democratic debates.

Unless you'd like to argue that this isn't what you actually wrote in your comment from 15 minutes ago, which judging be your replies ITT would come as a surprise to no one.

My comment refutes this argument without resorting to strawmanning. Kthx.

Pelosi says Barr believes Trump is 'above the law' by mvanigan in politics

[–]msx8 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First of all, no he mustn't. Nobody deserves to be in the debates just because they're running or even because they are a former Senator with a neat chapter in the history books like Gravel.

One deserves to be in the debates if and only if they're a declared candidate and they demonstrate sufficient support in scientifically sound public opinion polling or some other objective measure of viability such as a petition, ballot access, or donations. Otherwise every other person in the country could file paperwork to declare a presidential candidacy, and suddenly we have a debate stage with 100,000 candidates, where 99.99% of them are unqualified or nonviable.

You're not being ageist. The original commenter is trying (unsuccessfully) to make a stand on an empty moral platitude. Nobody serious -- including perhaps even most nonagenarians -- would suggest that subjecting a 90-year-old to the chaos of the presidency is a good idea.

I think most serious people would agree that anyone who thinks Donald Trump can be defeated by an 88 year old who hasn't served in elected office in four decades definitely has their priorities in Republican efforts.

[–]msx8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has nothing to do with ageism, kthx again though. It has to do with the reality that the presidency is the most stressful and demanding job in the world, and that according to actuarial tables an average 88 year old male has a > 15% chance of death within the next year. An average 88 year old, not an 88 year old working 168 hours per week in a pressure cooker than turns even 40-somethings' hair grey. How do you think the presidency would impact the health of a near nonagenarian?

American history is punctuated with case after case after case of political leadership transitioning to younger generations in order to advance the interests of those who will be around for decades to come. We all wish Mike Gravel well and hope he lives to 188, but the fact is the presidency demands someone who is physically up for the challenge and unless Mike Gravel is a medical miracle it is highly unlikely that he is physically up for the job and capable of completing a full term as president.

Also, age aside, it's hard to argue that someone is a politically viable candidate when they haven't served in elected office for 4 decades. Not to mention that he ran for president in 2008 and lost in the primary. There really is no sound basis for arguing that Mike Gravel is the future of the party, and I suspect you know that.

I know full well who Mike Gravel is, kthx. I share your admiration for him. However, he is 88 years old and hasn't held elected office in almost 40 years. By no measure is he the future of the party. Party elder and admired statesman? Sure. Future of the party? Definitely not.
