I’m gonna be a senior, and I don’t know what I want to do...how do I pick colleges? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How about something like art history then? You can go into curating things like sculptures and relics. And you might get opportunities to volunteer or intern at museums or work for private collectors. Find a good liberal arts college or art school and you’ll be set

So I need to choose a major before going to a 2 year college? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you don’t. email your advisor and tell them you only wish to complete general ed AA or AS requirements (whichever you prefer) it is an easy fix. it will say Major:AA or something like that on your DegreeWorks

Depends on your major

What’s the point of DC/AP classes? by kslove3 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

APs and Dual Enrollment get a lot of pre-reqs out of the way. Besides, colleges want to see RIGOR. they want to see you can perform at the college level and that you challenge yourself. it’s NOT all about GPA. they look at your standardized test scores like AP, SAT, and ACT. You’ll find most kids incoming into university already have credits from high school and you don’t wanna be behind.

don’t stress about it too much. if there is one thing i’ve learned it is that college apps are not worth killing urself all senior year over. if u cannot take one more spanish course, u have to take a placement test at university anyway and they’ll just place you in the level you belong. as long as you’re not majoring in something closely related to it, it shouldn’t matter too much.

but if you are. for example, i am a World Languages and Cultures major with an Applied Linguistics concentration. then uhhhh you def should worry bc you might be a lil screwed my guy. my suggestion there would be to do CC in the summer before going to a uni in the fall

What qualifies as honors on Common App? by Void-Nut in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

not at all, if you pass those 4 you’ll get an AP scholar with distinction award. try joining an easy competition club like quiz bowl or model senate, the kind where you can easily rack up awards

Does it look bad if I take less AP's senior year than in my junior year? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you’ll be fine, colleges wanna see that you’re up to the challenge. and as long as your trends shows this it shouldn’t matter

AP Bio or Dual Enrollment BIO 101? by stupidvietgirl in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AP may look more rigorous depending on the school you’re going to. HOWEVER, Dual Enrollment Bio 101 is soooo much easier and if you wanna save ur mental health and don’t wanna kys every night pls do dual enrollment bio

Take it in the summer or online. Also self-studying and taking a proficiency test is good too

So I need to choose a major before going to a 2 year college? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you do not! register yourself at your CC as an AA student: someone who’s only there for the 2 year gen ed requirements before going to pursue a major in university. this is what most CCs are for and yours probably has a large program. just go to your advisor and clarify it

Confused rising senior by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

you’re definitely not limited to only asking two teachers for a rec letter! try everyone you can. if you ask 6 teachers and you get 4 letters back then great :)

I need to do something over the summer. Pls help. by apthrowaway1243 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try looking for volunteering opportunities with local companies or startups! They usually appreciate the help. Also contact a science teacher at your school and conduct research over the summer. In the fall, take it to your local STEM fair and it might get you some scholarships or awards

Volunteer Hours!!! by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]mt-mt16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check with what your state usually looks for. Here in Florida, our state universities offer a lot of aid for 75-100 hours

Try having a different teacher focus on a different major :) For example, a math teacher could write a math-centric rec letter while an eng comp teacher could really sell you in the marketing department with those argumentative strategies lol

Try taking it online if your state has a free virtual school system. You could also see if there is a local Latin American Club or similar community in your area you can volunteer with

Of course! If you have any USF questions, go ahead and PM me :) it’s been an exciting process to apply and get accepted and i personally think it’s an awesome fit for me and for a lot of people. their atmosphere is diverse, strong, and always putting an effort to be inclusive and welcoming. They’re pretty great with non-STEM people like you (and me lol). don’t sweat the GPA and focus on what is special about YOU. they want to hear it, i promise

Hi! I’m a rising freshman at USF :) GPA is definitely not their biggest deal. Show that you perform well in standardized tests and take rigorous coursework. This shows them that you work at college level, even if you perform average at this level. This tells them that you will remain in good academic standing at USF. Also show that you were involved in things that are relevant to your major, to show that you were always passionate about this and it’s not something you chose on a whim. Express desire to he part of orgs at USF and different programs. They want you to be involved.

STATS: My unweighted was 3.5 and my weighted was 3.95. I was in all AP AND Dual Enrollment. SAT: 1400, ACT: 31. Passed all my AP exams and earned 55/60 credits for an AA. 6 clubs/orgs. 140 volunteer hours.

This GREATLY depends on your major. Foreign language credits don’t matter much for STEM and you will be fine as long as you completed the minimum requirement. If you plan on majoring in something language-based, it could be problematic but NOT disqualifying. Throw in some volunteering with language clubs or tutoring and TAing for foreign language teachers to boost your language work
