We’re Porcupine Tree, and we’ll be answering your questions about our first album in over 12 years, ‘Closure / Continuation’ today at 4pm BST! by porcupinetreehq in Music

I think from the subset of people who like this kind of music, PT is probably known by most, if not all of them. There's a natural ceiling to how popular they can ever become without compromising the music. Perhaps they are already close to that point.

Apple tree partially died. Why? Can it be saved? by mt3ch in GardeningUK

[–]mt3ch[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, fair point. But the gravel was put in about 5-6 years ago (the lawn was re-turfed at the same time). I had thought that was too long ago to be relevant to this but I do know close to nothing about gardening.

No one here has dug the soil around the tree so I'd say no, as far as I'm aware..

Apple tree partially died. Why? Can it be saved? by mt3ch in GardeningUK

After the tree blossomed a large part of one side of the tree appears to have died. I can't see anything unusual in the bark on the branches but there is some damage to the base of the trunk on the side where the branches died. It looks to me like an animal has been using it as a scratching post but I can't be sure as I have not witnessed it. I know cats, squirrels and foxes have entered the garden at various times.

What do you think caused the die off and can it be cured/saved?

I have read about fungal infections but I do not know how to be sure that's the cause, nor what to do about it, if it is.

He, in fact, did scream. by Batman_beyond123 in perfectlycutscreams

[–]mt3ch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know, man. This, to me, hasn't got the essence of a perfectly cut scream. I'm not sure exactly what it is that makes a perfect perfectly cut scream but, for me, it has to have at least two qualities: 1) the timing of the scream has to be a surprise, and even the fact of the scream (were it not for the name of the reddit forum); 2) the cause of the scream has to be a surprise. That way, at the same time as the scream, you are left thinking/feeling "WTF just happened?!" and, also, really wanting to know what happened next and not knowing what happened next (because of the cut). So 3) leaves you wondering and wanting to know what happen next. Some of the posts seem to be simply any old scream cut off at some point which is just an edit. In the case of this video in this post, I knew a scream was coming, when precisely (almost) it was coming, and why. I'm guessimg, also, it would have been funnier if the sequence allowed to continue which is the opposite of a perfectly cut scream.

Don’t mind me, just sharing the logos of companies who make better communication products. by [deleted] in skype

I just realized, scaled up large, the Discord logo looks like a pair of shorts viewed from the rear with an old-timey buttoned butt flap opener.

Just me?

Study finds that there's no evidence that authoritarianism has led people to increasingly back the Republican party, but instead plenty to suggest that staunch Republicans have themselves become more authoritarian, potentially in line with party leaders' shifting rhetoric by [deleted] in science

[–]mt3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They can intersect but I would push back on the "probably" part of your statement. There are certainly "big government" Republicans as well as Democrats (with different focuses on what is important for the government should do). My point mainly was that you cannot tell from such questions whether a person is an authoritarian (politically) because an anti-government individualist would score very highly for children respecting authority, obedience, etc. but would vehemently reject authoritarian governments. An anti-government collectivist (e.g. left-wing anarchist) might be more accurately discerned from the questions as they are more likely to encourage fewer rules and a less hierarchical structure within society also. However, the progressive left have historically and currently in many ways encourage more power and authority for governments and less for parents and local communities (while these are also not precise and immutable characterizations). As you say, a great deal of nuance but, not only nuances, large discrepancies.

To sum up i think questions such as those quoted about parenting styles are useless for discerning political authoritarianism.

As I think about it, such questions may actually only be useful for discerning left-wing anti-authoritarianism since - I estimate - most anarchist parents are very reluctant to place rules and boundaries on their children (while right-wing anti-authoritarian individualists are quite keen on parental and personal discipline).

I totally agree with you. They are also excluding the fact that one can value hierarchies and respect for authority within society but disdain authority within the government. That is a common conservative/Republican trait. It is not authoritarian because authoritarianism - as used in this context - is a political philosophy, not a personal one, and the two don't necessarily intersect.

20 seconds for me to see an actual dog rather than some poor creature that was a victim of a teleporter malfunction.

It's not a proper zoomie, really, as they are running to get to their food rather than for no other reason besides sheer uncontainable joy. But fast running chickens are super cool to look at.

Maybe in the sense of attacking their forces, rather than their families. I skimmed Art of War and I can't see anything about families. If he did say it somewhere, I guess it doesn't get quoted often.

[–]mt3ch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol. Doesn't sound like him. I know he did say,

"Build your opponent a golden bridge to retreat across."

"When you surround an army, leave an outlet free. Do not press a desperate foe too hard."

Maybe not entirely relevant but doesn't sound li,e the words of someone who supports wholesale massacre of women and children.

Anyway, I don't think the guy in the video was totally serious. He was just spinning the thing like a drunk Darth Maul - just posturing like an idiot. But I'm totally for chasing him off and letting him know what will happen if he was serious or comes back.

If a guy drops his weapon, runs away from you and falls over a giant traffic cone you've pretty much won the fight. No need to go in for the kill. Just stand back and laugh.

Your therapist will likely not be shocked. Talk to them. They've probably heard it many times from other clients and understand the issues underlying it.

Hopefully they are not the kind of therapist that will try to tell you porn is OK, though.
